Book 'Em: Undereducated, Overincarcerated from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) on April 24, 2008 9 views
After successfully exposing injustices at the Connecticut Juvenile Training School in their 2004 documentary, CJTS: At What Cost? youth filmmakers at Youth Rights Media have turned their attention and their cameras-to uncovering the school to prison pipeline. In the face of No Child Left Behind and public outcry about the statewide Achievement Gap, YRM media makers pose and explore an important but seldom asked question: how are laws, policies and institutional procedures pushing youth out of the classrooms and closer to jail cells? In June 2005, 13 youth media makers premiered Book Em: Undereducated, Overincarcerated to a standing room only audience at New Haven s Little Theatre. The film, which includes interviews with students, teachers, administrators, attorneys and researchers, discusses truancy laws, zero tolerance policies, the overuse of school suspensions, and the role of police officers in schools. The award winning film has garnered significant press, including coverage in the Hartford Courant, the New Haven Register, the Norwalk Hour, local television news outlets, and on CPTV s Front and Center with Ray Hardman. In March, the film will broadcast nationally as the juvenile justice feature for Open Transmission youth media showcase on Free Speech TV.For more information about this film and to take action visit: http://www.mediathatmattersfest.org/6/book_em_undereducated_overincarcerated/

A Girl Like Me from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) on April 17, 2008 21 views
For my high-school literature class I was constructing an anthology with a wide range of different stories that I believed reflected the black girl s experience. For the different chapters, I conducted interviews with a variety of black girls in my high school, and a number of issues surfaced concerning the standards of beauty imposed on today s black girls and how this affects their self-image. I thought this topic would make an interesting film and so when I was accepted into the Reel Works Teen Filmmaking program, I set out to explore these issues. I also decided to would reconduct the doll test initially conducted by Dr. Kenneth Clark, which was used in the historic desegregation case, Brown vs. Board of Education. I thought that by including this experiment in my film, I would shed new light on how society affects black children today and how little has actually changed. With help from my mentor, Shola Lynch, and thanks to the honesty and openness of the girls I interviewed, I was able to complete my first documentary in the fall of 2005. I learned that giving the girls an opportunity to talk about these issues and their experiences helped us all to look deeper and examine the many things in society that affect us and shape who we are. Intellectual Capital: Bruce Gordon, SF '88 from MIT Sloan on April 04, 2008 18 views
Accountability is a source of power, and activism is an obligation, according to MIT Sloan alumnus Bruce Gordon, SF '88, former president and CEO of the NAACP and longtime telecom executive. In an inspiring talk before MIT Sloan students as part of the Dean's Innovative Leader Series, Gordon said the disparity in society between those who have and those who don't is growing every day. Calling the executive suite an under-utilized source of power for social change, he urged MIT Sloan students to go out and make a difference. "Think about your individual capacity to effect change in this country, if not the world," he said.

Dr. Boyce Watkins Speaks on the Importance of a College Education from - blip.tv (beta) on March 14, 2008 33 views
Boyce Watkins speaks on getting a good education. Dr. Watkins has also directly challenged Bill O'Reilly (O'Reilly Factor) on their racism and has referred to Juan Williams, a black FOX News analyst as "the eternally happy negro". Watkins is a regular contributor on issues related to Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and the 2008 presidential campaign. He has also commented on the rapper 50 Cent, Kanye West and other members of the hip hop community. His site is www.BoyceWatkins.com. Dr. Watkins is a regular guest on CNN, FOX News, BET, CBS, ESPN, and other national media. He was the source of some controversy with Bill O'Reilly from the O'Reilly Factor, and has been a guest on other Fox Shows such as Hannity & Colmes. He has also publicly disputed Bill Cosby for stating that african-american youth and the hip hop generation are not very productive. Watkins wrote "What if George Bush were a Black Man?" and "Everything you ever wanted to know about college", which he argues is an appeal to the MTV generation to look past 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, TI, Kanye West and others to explore their educational potential. Dr. Boyce is a Finance Professor at Syracuse University and a graduate of The Ohio State University. He recently spoke at The University of Kentucky and demanded that they increase their numbers of black students and faculty. He was also one of the instrumental black leaders behind the scenes during the cases with the Jena 6, Don Imus and Michael Vick. He worked closely with Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson, appearing on the air with them to suggest strategies to get Imus off the air. It was Dr. Watkins' idea to challenge his corporate sponsors that led to Imus' dismissal. He was also outspoken on Barry Bonds' situation and the OJ Simpson trial. Watkins argues that Barry Bonds might be a jerk, but his alleged indiscretion is no worse than the evidence against Lance Armstrong for the use of performance enhancing drugs. He made his comments on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, The Wendy Williams Experience, CNN, FOX, BET, CBS and other networks.

This vintage film was produced by the NAACP. It was one of the exhibits Thurgood Marshall used to help win the Brown VS Board of education decision. Another prominent figure in the history of Historical Black schools is, Julius Rosenwald, a Jewish philanthropist. Mr. Rosenwald is known for his support of Booker T. Washignton, he helped rural african american communities build over 5000 schools. Today these schools are known as the Rosenwald schools and there is a growing interest in preserving and restoring them. Rosenwald was born on August 12, 1862, in Springfield, Illinois. Throughout his adult life he served Sears, Roebuck successively as vice president (1895-1910), president (1910-1925), and chairman of the board (1925-1932). Under his leadership, Sears developed its lucrative nationwide mail-order business. Tour with alumni, John Medley of Bordentown, New Jersey's, African American school affectionately known as "The Tuskegee of the North". Founded in 1886 by Rev. Rice. Modeled after Booker T. Washington, It was NJ's first Vocational Technical Institute. The school was self sustaining. Most of the 40 buildings were built on the 400 acre campus by the students. The campus included farms, technical labs and industrial shops. Bordentown's excellent academic reputation attracted supporters and dignitaries such as Albert Einstein. Unfortunately it was closed in 1955 due to it's non-compliance of the Brown VS Board of Education segregation decision. It is currently being used as a female juvenile correctional facility. Beach Walk #558 - What comes first, doesn't matter from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) on December 29, 2007 60 views
I read an interesting article in the NY Times a while back about the leader of the NAACP stepping down. HIs vision of building economic equality as a way to lead people to social equality was not well-supported. It got me thinking, that in many cases it doesn't matter which comes first. Try one, and if it doesn't work, try the other. Hawaiian Word: Mua: firstPlease join us over at The Reef. Louisiana NAACP March Jena Six from NATEPERKINS.TV Channel On BLIP.TV on September 11, 2007 1,074 views
Justice for the Jena "#6" Now ( http://nateperkins.blip.tv )Free The Jena Six Facing South was one of the first media outlets to cover the case of the Jena 6 -- black youths in rural Louisiana who are facing up to 22 years in prison (thanks to an all-white jury) after getting in a schoolyard fight with white students. This week, ColorOfChange gives us an update on the status of the case and their national campaign: Last Tuesday, over 300 people from across the country descended on Jena: we rallied in front of the courthouse, marched through downtown Jena, and cut through a line of sheriffs to hand-deliver petitions from more than 43,000 ColorOfChange.org members to the District Attorney's office. The lives of six young black men are being ruined by Jim Crow justice in Jena, Louisiana. The District Attorney has refused to protect the rights of Jena's Black population and has turned the police and courts into instruments of intimidation and oppression.JENA, La. -- Two civil rights leaders urged Jena residents to demand equal justice, and one called for an investigation of the district attorney who is prosecuting six black teenagers charged with serious crimes in the beating of a white classmate. The Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton both said Sunday they would join thousands of people expected in Jena on Sept. 20 to protest the teens' treatment. In conversations, they sometimes sound more exhausted than angry. One question: If justice is blind, does that mean color blind too? By Susan Roesgen, CNN CorrespondentPosted By CNN: 5:51 PM ET 31 Comments Susan When I first heard this story, the picture that flahed through my mind was the town I grew up in. The town with the "Negroes" who lived at one side and the whites who occupied the rest. The separation was an imaginary line, for the streets did no stop. If a "Negro" came into the white side of town for whatever reason you could literally see the fear in his eyes. It was always a he, never a she. For the whites the same rule applied. My Grandfather lived in La., and worked for the railroad. He never mistreated anyone, never talked down to anyone. If his crew had to eat outside, or drink from an old pump, he did the same. His boss carried a big, thick stick because he was afraid one or more of hid "Negroes" would kill him. He had reason to be fearful.I wasn't afraid of the "Negroes", but I was definitely afraid of Mr. Day. If you think this was back in the early part of the century, you would be wrong. I thought we had come farther. Guess not. Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. Maggie Posted By Maggie, GVMO : 6:23 PM ETHi Susan, It is unclear to me what Bell's past criminal record is. Two things stand out to me: that Bell was tried as an adult at age 17 and that in this trial his shoes were sought out as a weapon, because if you can't prove evidence of a weapon, then it would be a mis-trial. THis case was definitely handled the wrong way. As far as the mayor and the residents of the small Louisiana town goes, their self-censored silence seems to tell a tale of its own. Posted By Ratna, New York, NY : 6:39 PM ETIn many places in the South justice is color blind now - some places linger though in the "old ways" and the old attitudes. The lawyer for the young man should have asked for a change in venue to give his client a more solid shot at a fair trial. Without knowing if a past record exists its hard to have an opinion any further. But if he didn't have a record, then without being seen as an attacker, and no other evidence to point to him as an attacker, the term railroaded comes to mind.
