UNICEF: Malaysian teen holds aquathon for Myanmar relief
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 15, 2008
SRI KEMBANGAN, Malaysia, 11 July 2008 -- Being thousands of miles away from Myanmar did not stop Tristan Lim, a 13-year-old student of the Alice Smith School in Malaysia, from working his hardest to help raise funds for the survivors of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar. In a show of support for the cyclone-affected country, Tristan promoted a one-man aquathlon event. The teenager swam over 3 km, which he then followed with an 8 km run. Through this fundraiser, he collected a total of $7,740 for the UNICEF Myanmar children's cyclone appeal. "I wanted to do this mainly because I've been to Myanmar and the people there were so nice," said Tristan. "I feel sorry for what they have lost. I have everything I need here -- my parents and a good education. They lost everything in a split second." To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/malaysia_44752.html

UNICEF: Rebuilding schools in Myanmar
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 25, 2008
YANGON, Myanmar 17 June 2008 -- The weather has become an added challenge to delivering aid in cyclone-ravaged Myanmar. On Sunday, a UNICEF mission delivering school tents was hampered by strong wind gusts, rain and pools of mud, making the unloading of some 900 kg of supplies very difficult. UNICEF and its partners have been able to reach people who live in the southern Irrawaddy Delta, but more aid is needed. Where villages have lost school buildings, UNICEF is delivering about 80 large tents that will provide safe learning spaces for more than 6,000 children. Death Toll in Myanmar Top 84,000
from YouTube :: Videos by AssociatedPress June 24, 2008
SelectPlusDeath Toll in Myanmar Top 84,000Death Toll in Myanmar Top 84,000The Associated PressThe number of dead following that massive cyclone in Myanmar continues to rise. The country's military government announced on Tuesday that the death toll has now topped 84,000. (June 24)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] Still rising ... The death toll associated with that cyclone that devastated Myanmar in May has now topped 84 thousand. Myanmar's military government announced the increase Tuesday morning ... its up from an earlier total of 77 thousand. And that latest number doesn't include the nearly 54 thousand people who remain missing. It was more than a month ago when Cyclone Nargis slammed into the Myanmar coast -- bringing with it death and destruction. A major international relief effort then got underway ... An effort that was at first hampered by Myanmar's reluctance to accept international aid. International relief groups contend even more needs to be done ... To make sure the more than two million survivors continue to have clean drinking water to stave off disease. Tuesday's update on the death toll was the first in more than a month. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) ANCHOR VOICE:-------------------------VIDEO PRODUCER: Kevin White------------------------------VIDEO SOURCE: File--------------------------VIDEO APPROVAL: Yes ------------------------------VIDEO RESTRICTIONS: No Access Myanmar----------------------------------SCRIPT/WIRE SOURCE:------------------------------------ Author: AssociatedPress Keywords: myanmar death_toll death toll 84 000 Added: June 24, 2008

Cyclone Nargis: 22,000 dead and counting
from Clipta - New Video Wave June 24, 2008
The death toll in Myanmar s devastating cyclone has now risen to more than 22,000, state media said. Another 41,000 people are also missing after cyclone Nargis hit the Irrawaddy Delta on Saturday (May 3). The announcement comes as international aid agencies are pushing to launch a massive operation in the worst-affected areas of the country. Hundreds of thousands of people are said to be without clean water and shelter, with some areas still cut off. The casualty count has been rising quickly as authorities reach hard-hit islands and villages in the Irrawaddy delta, the former rice bowl of Asia , which bore the brunt of Cyclone Nargis s 190 km (120 mile) per hour winds.
