The Dallas Mavericks are developing a knack for letting easy wins turn into tough ones. In their first game since needing overtime to salvage what was once a 20-point lead, the Mavericks needed double overtime to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 125-122 Wednesday night after letting a 15-point fourth-quarter lead slip away. "We keep shooting ourselves in the foot," said Antawn Jamison, who scored 23 points. "We have to understand the urgency of the situation. We have to fight and stay competitive." These close games are only part of the emotional ups and downs coach Don Nelson has gone through this week. Before tipoff, he spent about a half-hour discussing his job status with team owner Mark Cuban, with Cuban telling Nelson, "You ain't going anywhere." The topic has become a source of speculation because the team has yet to get on a roll this season. The Mavs responded through three quarters, going up 85-70 early in the fourth. Helping Antoine Walker notch a second straight triple-double seemed to be all that was left, especially considering that Philadelphia was without injured starters Kenny Thomas and Derrick Coleman. But the 76ers started nailing 3-pointers and even went up by four in the final three minutes of regulation. Neither team led by that much again. "No moral victories," said Philadelphia's Allen Iverson, who had five 3-pointers and finished with 31 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. "We had opportunities to win the game, we just couldn't get it done. That's the sad part about everything. The game was right there for us to win. We just didn't execute the way we needed to down the stretch." Dirk Nowitzki helped win it with five points in the second overtime, including the go-ahead jumper with 24.1 seconds left. He finished with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Michael Finley had 32 points. Walker got his milestone with 11 points, 17 rebounds and 13 assists -- but shot 4-of-19 and fouled out in the final minute of the second overtime. The Mavs certainly could've done without the extra 10 minutes; at 3:14 it was the longest game in team history. And this was their only home game in a stretch of five games in seven days that concludes Friday at Denver and Saturday at Portland. Dallas ended up allowing it most fourth-quarter points all season, 37. Philadelphia scored its most points of the season, aided by great 3-point shooting: 9-of-12 in the fourth quarter and first overtime. The 76ers went 0-for-3 in the second OT. Glenn Robinson had 34 points and seven rebounds, and Samuel Dalembert set career highs with 24 points and 16 rebounds. In the fourth quarter, Dallas recovered to lead by two with 20 seconds left. Robinson tied it with 14.9 seconds left, then Finley missed a 20-footer at the buzzer. Iverson and Nowitzki traded 3s in the first overtime, then with 21.9 seconds left the 7-foot Nowitzki lost the ball out of bounds while trying to back down 6-foot-3 Eric Snow. It was only the fourth turnover for Dallas; three would've tied the NBA record. Aaron McKie, playing only his second game after missing seven straight with a strained hamstring, had a jumper go in and out at the buzzer. Nowitzki hit a jumper for the first points in the second overtime. Philadelphia tied it, but never led again. The key basket was a 15-footer by Nowitzki that made it 122-120. It came at the end of a wild series that began with him missing a shot, Jamison missing two follows, then 5-foot-11 Travis Best snagging that rebound in the paint and feeding Nowitzki. Dalembert missed one of two free throws with 18.5 seconds left when he could've tied it at 122. After Best made two foul shots to put Dallas back up by three, Snow missed one of two free throws. Then Finley went 1-of-2 from the line, giving Philadelphia one last chance. Snow wasted it by putting up an airball on a 3-pointer. Coleman missed a second straight game with a sprained left knee. Thomas, who was averaging 10.9 points and 12.7 rebounds the last six games, sat out because of a sprained right ankle. With Richard Hamilton sidelined, the Detroit Pistons abandoned their three-guard lineup and used a bigger starting unit that stifled the Milwaukee Bucks. Tayshaun Prince scored nine of his 19 points in the decisive third quarter and Allen Iverson added 18, lifting the Pistons to an 87-76 victory Saturday night. The Bucks had won three consecutive games, averaging 106 points during the streak. The Pistons, starting 6-foot-9 Amir Johnson in place of Hamilton, a slim 6-7 guard, held Milwaukee to 30 percent shooting. "Everything got started because defensively we were very good," Detroit coach Michael Curry said. Johnson had eight points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, giving the Pistons a different defensive look from their usual lineup that consists of 6-11 Rasheed Wallace as their only big starter. The Pistons acknowledged after the game that they are better defensively with Johnson on the floor, and better offensively when Hamilton and Iverson are on the court together with guard Rodney Stuckey. "When we have the bigger lineup, obviously we're better defensively," Prince said. "It's kind of pick and choose. "Sometimes you are going to need the offensive side, but more importantly you're going to need the defensive side." The game was tight until Detroit went on a 27-5 run midway through the third quarter. Milwaukee missed 14 of 17 shots during one stretch of the period, trailed 73-55 after three quarters and never got close again. "We've been good [defensively] in stretches, especially with two bigs on the floor," Curry said. "With the small lineup that we usually start, we give up that inside presence. Not having that other big, teams attack even more to the inside. When they attacked today, if they did get by Amir or Rasheed, the other one was there to protect the basket. They also didn't attack the paint nearly as hard." Andrew Bogut had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Milwaukee, which mainly rested its starters for the final 15 minutes after the game was decided. Michael Redd, the Bucks' leading scorer, had four points and missed nine of 11 shots, including his last five. "Because I'm putting the other guys in doesn't mean I'm giving up on the game," Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles said. "I still intend to win the game. It can be very confusing on certain nights of why certain guys just don't have it, but it does happen in the NBA." Hamilton missed the game with a groin injury that he aggravated in Friday night's victory over Oklahoma City. He is listed as day to day, and Curry recognizes the need to get him back in the lineup. "We all understand that we have two shooting guards and both of them are very, very good," Curry said. "We need to give them fair time on the court so they can be productive. Because of that we lose some time with our bigs." The Pistons beat Milwaukee for the 10th time in 13 meetings since the 2005-06 season. Wallace had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Stuckey added 16 points for Detroit, which has won three straight and six of eight. "It's a bit discouraging to lose at home, but we've had one bad game out of the last six or seven home games," Bogut said. "That's no excuse." The Pistons missed their first five shots of the second half and Luke Ridnour's jumper gave Milwaukee its last lead, 48-46, with 10:35 left in the quarter. Stuckey then tipped in his own missed layup to tie the score at 48, starting a 27-5 run in which Detroit made 11 of 15 shots to take a 73-53 lead on Prince's free throw with 19 seconds left in the period. Prince had nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal in the third. Duncan's patented bank shot with 26 seconds left provided the final lead change of a seesaw fourth quarter and helped the Western Conference to a 136-132 victory over the Eastern Conference at the Staples Center. With flashy performances from hometown heroes Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, the West won for the third straight time. But with the game in the balance, West coach Flip Saunders went to Duncan, the superstar forward of the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs. Working against New Orleans Hornets center Jamaal Magloire, Duncan buried a turnaround bank shot to give the West a 133-132 edge, the sixth lead change of the final period. "It was a play that Flip drew up a couple of options to it," Duncan said. "I was kind of the third one." "Timmy is one of those guys, he makes big plays," Saunders said. The East had two more chances, but Orlando's Tracy McGrady threw away a lob pass and - after Seattle's Ray Allen made two free throws - Milwaukee's Michael Redd missed a potential tying 3-pointer. The league-leading Philadelphia 76ers did not need their All-Star center or his backup to show the defending NBA champions they are capable of usurping their title. With Theo Ratliff on the injured list and Matt Geiger suspended, Allen Iverson outplayed Kobe Bryant and the 76ers used a platoon of reserve centers to deal with Shaquille O'Neal en route to an impressive 112-97 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. "We knew we were outmatched. We didn't have two of our big men, but we just knew we had to come out and play some ball," Iverson said after scoring 40 points and handing out nine assists in 40 minutes. Iverson hit 14-of-29 shots and 10-of-11 free throws to reach 40 points for the seventh time in his last 11 games and the 11th time this season. Bryant managed just 18 points while committing six turnovers in 41 minutes. "I don't approach the game like it's Kobe, and I want to have a big game against him," Iverson said. "I want to play a good game against everybody. When you play well against another great player, it's only natural for you to feel good about the win. But that's not the most important thing for me." Ratliff likely is out until April with a broken wrist, but the Sixers appeared to get some help in the paint when Geiger returned from a 1 1/2-month layoff in Tuesday's 107-104 win at Milwaukee. But Geiger received a two-game suspension for violating the league's steroids policy earlier Wednesday, leaving rookie Nazr Mohammed and second-year centers Todd MacCulloch and Jumaine Jones to deal with O'Neal in the middle.
