Here s one student that takes the Science Fair to the next level. Bridger Maxwell, a high school student at Utah County Academy of Sciences (UCAS) decided to create a multi-touch table for his Science Fair entry kinda like an iPhone screen, and Microsoft Surface on a budget. The multi-touch experience allows for object movement, rotation, growing and shrinking, and even multi-hand, multi-person use. Inspired by movies like Minority Report, Maxwell leverages Apple OS X, code developed during Google Summer of Code called Open Touch, and his own code. The table, made from plexiglass and a dissembled Acer monitor, uses infrared light emitting diodes and an IR camera to detect and transmit fingertip motions as inputs. Maxwell also expects to experience a future where multi-touch technology becomes a standard way to interact with applications, particularly for graphic manipulation and even gaming. Maxwell submitted his code back to the community at code.google.com/p/corkboard/ and has received coverage on Ars Technica and a local NBC news story. At HP s Connecting Your World event in Berlin, Germany, we talked with John Cook, VP of marketing for HP s Consumer PC group. He gave us a hands-on first look at the beautiful new HP TouchSmart PC. One thing we really liked about the new TouchSmart is its completely redone interface. The software looks clean, polished, useful, and eminently easy to use. It would be great, however, if the TouchSmart made more use of multi-touch. Cook demonstrates a pinch gesture in the software but that s pretty much it. We re keeping our eyes peeled for more multi-touch functionality in upcoming software updates and releases.

As we're ramping up for the upcoming IxDA event next week, we are in the process of constructing our very own DIY multi touch table. Thanks to the great people at NUI Group and the Touchlib development kit, Jennifer whipped up a quick demo of one of the pre installed apps.Much like the other videos that are out there, we wanted to try it out ourselves and actually feel out the experience. The exercise is our way of understanding the interactions to inspire future development as we prototype further.We are going to work on implementing an actual table tonight, so stick with us for more videos to come in the future as we construct this bad boy.

For years Microsoft has been investing in many forms of natural input in order to simplify the way people interact with their PC's and devices. The advent of the original Windows graphical user interface forever changed the way people used their PC's. Today, advances in pen and handwriting technology in Windows Vista offers students a natural and intuitive way to capture searchable notes and diagrams in the classroom.
