My Heart Was Set on You - sung by Sutton Foster

My Heart Was Set on You - sung by Sutton Foster

from The Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook Podcast on October 11, 2009
Duration: 0
Special Episode #7: It's been so long since I've done one of these episodes that I omitted a word from my intro! (Did anyone catch it?) I'm thrilled to welcome back the incomparable Sutton Foster. Not just a ridiculous talent, but also one of the warmest, most generous people with whom I've had the privilege of collaborating. Sutton is currently giving a stellar performance as Princess Fiona in the musical Shrek, but only through January 24, 2010, so if you haven't seen her in it yet, get moving! With one Tony Award and three Tony nominations under her belt, she is one of Broadway's great leading ladies, infusing everything she does with her idiosyncratic charm, humor, and heart. Sutton is here to sing "My Heart Was Set on You," the song I wrote for her wonderful debut CD, Wish. A new activist, Sutton has been outspoken in her support of Marriage Equality and has sponsored a bus to take people to the National Equality March in Washington DC this weekend. Check out Sutton's video for the organization Broadway Impact. Coming soon is her eponymous website, a concert tour, and a teaching stint at NYU! Those lucky kids!! To see what kind of soup I served her from my Jeff and Martha cooking project (a la Julie and Julia), visit my blog! This episode was recorded on October 9, 2009.

GREASE with Grace!

GREASE with Grace!

from YouTube :: Videos by SamHarrisCOM on March 12, 2009
Duration: 474
► http://SamTUNES.net Sam is on another date with Vlog People favorite, Mini-Critic, Grace Kaufman. This time they are at the opening night of GREASE staring Taylor Hicks, the American Idol winner. Grease is a musical by Jim Jacobs (who you meet in this video) and Warren Casey about the way rock and roll changed American sexuality and culture during the pivotal moment when America took its first tentative steps out of the conformity and social/sexual conservatism of the 1950s and toward the individualism and sexual revolution of the 1960s. Grease embodies this cultural friction in its two leads, Sandy (as the 1950s) and Danny (as the 1960s). The show takes its name from the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as the greasers. The musical, set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School, follows ten working-class kids as they navigate the complexities of sex, cars (and sex in cars), and drive-ins (and sex at drive-ins). The score is a highly authentic re-creation of early, raw rock and roll, invoking early groups including Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Huey "Piano" Smith, Paul Anka, and many more. The show tackles such social issues as teenage pregnancy and gang violence; its themes include love, friendship, teenage rebellion, sexual exploration during adolescence and, to some extent, class consciousness/class conflict. The show became the longest-running Broadway musical in history, until it was beaten by A Chorus Line, and went on to become a West End hit, a hugely successful film, a popular 1994 Broadway revival, and a staple of regional theatre, summer stock, community theatre, and high school and middle school drama groups. It remains Broadway's twelfth longest-running show in history. The Broadway production, directed by Tom Moore and choreographed by Patricia Birch (who later directed the ill-fated sequel of the film adaptation of Grease), opened on June 7, 1972 at the Broadhurst Theatre, where it ran for five months before transferring to the Royale Theatre. It remained there for more than seven years before moving to the Majestic Theatre to complete its record-setting 3,388-performance run. The original cast included Barry Bostwick as Danny and Carole Demas as Sandy, with Adrienne Barbeau, Timothy Meyers, and Walter Bobbie in supporting roles. Replacements later in the run included Jeff Conaway, Marilu Henner, Peter Gallagher, Ilene Graff, Judy Kaye, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Jerry Zaks, and Treat Williams. Richard Gere was an understudy for many roles in this production, including Danny Zuko, Teen Angel, and Vince Fontaine. After twenty previews, a Broadway revival directed and choreographed by Jeff Calhoun opened on May 11, 1994 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, where it ran for 1,505 performances. Featured were Ricky Paull Goldin (Danny), Brooke Shields and Rosie O'Donnell (Rizzo), Susan Wood (Sandy), Megan Mullally (Marty), Hunter Foster (Roger), and Billy Porter (Teen Angel). A U.S. national tour of the 1994 production started in September 1994 in New Haven, Connecticut, and ran for several years. The opening tour cast included Sally Struthers (Miss Lynch), who stayed with the tour for several years, Angela Pupello (Rizzo), Rex Smith (Danny), Trisha M. Gorman (Sandy), and Davy Jones (actor) (Vince Fontaine). Brooke Shields (Rizzo) started on the tour in November 1994 before joining the Broadway cast. Other notable performers on the tour were Mickey Dolenz (Vince Fontaine), Adrian Zmed (Danny), Debbie Gibson, Heather Stokes, Mackenzie Phillips and Jasmine Guy (Rizzo), Sutton Foster (Sandy) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (Jan), and Lucy Lawless (Rizzo, 1997). Doody The youngest member of the Burger Palace Boys (later, the T-Birds). Generally foolish, and gullible. (tenor) Notable Doodys have included Barry Pearl, Martin Ericsson, John Travolta, Ray Quinn athe Tony Nominated Sam Harris. - "FREE" The New Album! http://samharris.com/free "Free" is available on iTunes at http://SamTUNES.net ► http://MySpace.com/SamHarrisMusic ... keep up to date, and be Sam's MySpace friend! ► http://SamTUNES.net ... to download Sam Harris songs and full albums. ► http://SamHarris.com ... information, biography, discography and buy cds. Download Song ► http://SamTunes.NET Sam Harris sings Those Magic Changes starring as Doody in the original Broadway stage revival of GREASE along with Rosie O'Donnell, Megan Mullally, Brooke Shields etc. THOSE MAGIC CHANGES What's that playing on the radio, why do I start swaying to and fro I have never heard that song before, but if I don't hear it anymore It's still familiar to me, sends a thrill right through me Cause those chords remind me of the night that I first fell in love to Those magic changes my heart arranges A melody that's never the same, a melody that's calling your name It begs you please, come back to me Please, return to me, don't go away again, oh make them play again The music I wanna hear is once again, you whisper in my ear Oh my darling I'll be waiting by the radio, you'll come back to me someday, I know Been so long since our last goodbye, but I'm singin' as I cry While the bass is sounding, while the drums are pounding Beatings of my broken heart will rise the first place of the charts Oh my heart arranges, oh those magic changes Johnny Contardo of Sha Na Na sang the version for the movie. ---------------------------- GREASE is a musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey about the way rock and roll changed American sexuality and culture during the pivotal moment when America took its first tentative steps out of the conformity and social/sexual oppression of the 1950s and toward the individualism and sexual freedom of the 1960s. Like The Rocky Horror Show does, Grease embodies this very real-world cultural friction in its two leads, Sandy (as the 1950s) and Danny (as the 1960s). The show takes its name from the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as the greasers. The musical, set in 1959 in fictional Rydell High in Chicago, follows ten working-class kids as they navigate the complexities of sex, cars (and sex in cars), and drive-ins (and sex at drive-ins). In its record-breaking original Broadway production, Grease was a raunchy, raw, aggressive, vulgar show which has since been sanitized and tamed down by subsequent productions. Lovely Lies - sung by Rebecca Luker

Lovely Lies - sung by Rebecca Luker

from The Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook Podcast on March 05, 2006
Duration: 0
Bonus Episode #1: Becca's back! I've made it a policy to avoid repeat guest appearances, but I had to make an exception for Rebecca Luker: a) because she was my first podcast guinea pig, back before I was able to separate the piano and the vocals, and I wanted to have an opportunity to record her magnificent voice with better sound, and b) because this song was written expressly for her. Rebecca Luker is the quintesssential Broadway leading lady. Not only has she led the casts of such high-profile Broadway revivals as The Music Man (Marian), The Sound of Music (Maria), Nine (Claudia) and Showboat (Magnolia), but she has also appeared in such original musicals as The Secret Garden (Lily) and The Phantom of the Opera (Christine). Lately, she has been enjoying a rather busy concert career, including a solo evening in the 2005 Lincoln Center American Songbook Series, a highly-acclaimed stint at Feinstein's at the Regency, and many symphonic gigs across the country, not to mention the odd Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook Concert and seemingly every New Voices Concert at Symphony Space. She has two wonderful solo CDs (Leaving Home, Anything Goes - Rebecca Luker sings Cole Porter) and a deservedly impressive discography. Today, she sings a song that does not appear in the songbook. (Something for Volume Two!!) It's called "Lovely Lies," and it has lyrics by the wonderful Beth Blatt (The Mistress Cycle) and music by me. It was written for Rebecca's recent engagement at Feinstein's, and hopefully she will sing it again when she returns there this May 9-20 for her encore engagement. (Call 212-339-4095 to reserve now!) Recorded 2/22/06.

Moving Right Along - sung by Ryan Perry and Jeff Blumenkrantz

from The Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook Podcast on January 24, 2006
Duration: 0
Episode #7: So you've been wondering why that explicit rating has been hovering over this podcast? Finally! Here it is: one of two songs in the book with dirty words in it! Parents (and prudes), be warned. Remember last week's episode with Judy Blazer as the Jewish mother whose son has just come out? Well, this week it's that son and his best friend at a gay bar. The song is "Moving Right Along" (from the abandoned project Fits and Starts), with music and lyrics by me. I'm thrilled to be joined by one of my best friends, the super-funny Ryan Perry, who inspired this song in the first place. (Yes, we went to gay bars together. No, we weren't nearly as horrible as these guys.) Ryan hasn't been acting and singing much lately (Booooo!), but those of you lucky enough to have caught him in Forever Plaid or Whorehouse Goes Public or the tours of The Full Monty and Floyd Collins will remember how fantastic he is. Recorded 1/15/06. And I'm happy to report that I have lured him back to the stage to appear in my Birdland concert on February 13th, along with former podcast guests Judy Blazer, Vicki Clark, Rebecca Luker, and Sally Wilfert. Call 212 581-3080 for reservations.

Episode #4: Hooray!! Another special guest star, this time the amazing Sally Wilfert (Assassins, Tom Sawyer, King David), who sings "I'm Free," from the one-act musical, Precious Little Jewel, with lyrics (and book) by Libby Saines and music by me. Recorded 12/29/05. Look for Sally in Rob Kapilow's upcoming What Makes It Great concerts in LA and Boston, as well as The Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook Concert live at Birdland in NYC on February 13th.
