Mouse embryos measure only a centimeter, and their internal organs are much smaller than that. But a new high-resolution 3-D atlas of the developing mouse, announced the week of Aug. 11 by Duke University and the University of Edinburgh researchers in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), allows scientists and students alike to electronically penetrate mouse bodies from 10-1/2 days before delivery up to 32 days after birth to examine any anatomical feature at any angle. New Jersey Spine Group - EOS Testimonial
from Dailymotion - channel tech & science June 11, 2008
New Jersey Spine Group testimonial about the Biospace med's EOS ultra-low dose 2D/3D orthopedic imager. biospace med was founded on a unique partnership between a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, a team of biomedical engineers, orthopaedic surgeons, and radiologists who have developed a complete orthopaedic imaging solution. The company's lead product, EOS ultra low dose 2D/3D Xray imager, allows full-body imaging of patients in a weight-bearing position that will enable global assessment of balance and posture. An advanced workstation, designed to generate a 3D skeletal image from the two planar images, is under development. EOS captures a whole or partial body image in a single scan without the need for any digital stitching -- all at a reduced dose. In addition, the system allows simultaneous bi-plane image acquisition (frontal and lateral). Information submitted to FDA in support of biospace med's marketing application demonstrated up to 10 times reduction in dose when compared with commercially available film systems -- without compromising image quality. EOS can also generate a 3D skeletal reconstruction from the two simultaneously acquired planar images. This product will also feature automatic measurement software designed to calculate a variety of length and angle calculations between individual bones and joints, potentially helping to evaluate global balance and posture. http://www.biospacemed.comAuthor: Biospacemed Tags: biospace med eos orthopedic spine reconstruction orthopaedic low dose mri ct 3D Posted: 11 June 2008 Rating: 0.0 Votes: 0

Sue Halpern: Can't Remember What I Forgot
from Speaker's Forum Podcast May 23, 2008
The thought of losing your memory is a scary thing. For many families taking care of someone with Alzheimer's, it's a slow motion tragedy. But if you forget someone's name or where you've put your keys, does that mean you're on the road to an incurable brain disease? And does doing the crossword puzzle really help? Sue Halpern wanted to learn what science actually knows about memory loss. She talked to neuroscientists and got injected with radioactive dye to find out. Her latest book is Can't Remember What I Forgot: The Good News From the Front Lines of Memory Research. Sue Halpern spoke at Town Hall Seattle on May 15, 2008.

Illustrative Visualization and Exploration of MR/fMRI Data
from YouTube :: Tag // ComputerGraphics May 21, 2008
Full Title: Illustrative Hybrid Visualization and Exploration of Anatomical and Functional Brain Data Common practice in brain research and brain surgery involves the multi-modal acquisition of brain anatomy and brain activation data. These highly complex three-dimensional data have to be displayed simultaneously in order to convey spatial relationships. Unique challenges in information and interaction design have to be solved in order to keep the visualization sufficiently complete and uncluttered at the same time. The visualization method presented in this paper addresses these issues by using a hybrid combination of polygonal rendering of brain structures and direct volume rendering of activation data. Advanced rendering techniques including illustrative display styles and ambient occlusion calculations enhance the clarity of the visual output. The presented rendering pipeline produces real-time frame rates and offers a high degree of configurability. Newly designed interaction and measurement tools are provided, which enable the user to explore the data at large, but also to inspect specific features closely. We demonstrate the system in the context of a cognitive neurosciences dataset. An initial informal evaluation shows that our visualization method is deemed useful for clinical research.
