After a long week last week, our two morning anchors, Megan and Justin got all giddy during a commercial spot while off air. I was in the editing bay watching the show and was lucky enough to pull out my camera, shoot at the monitor and catch this moment as it happened. The people I work with are just fantastic and this video shows you how fun and good natured the people are there. Other formats available: Quicktime (.mov)

I like lumi re videos. I like setting up a frame, as if taking a still picture, and then letting the camera roll for 60 seconds to see what happens within the frame. Often, something serendipitous will happen within the composition and within the allotted time. But lumi re videos are silent, and I'm a big fan of videos with natural soundtrack. Like Ryanne (and Jay)'s films, cut simply together, each clip with its natural background hum. There's something very moving about the short rhythmic pulse of these sounds and images together. I shot this one as a lumi re, but it'd only be half as good without its natural soundtrack. It s been a really hard year for Iowans. Beatings from tornados and floods over the past few months have really taken their toll. In Cedar Rapids, our Freedom Festival, where the majority of us go to watch fireworks and celebrate July 4th every year had to be cancelled this year. CBS 2 News and the Kernels teamed up to celebrate the 4th of July and raise money for flood victims. Other formats available: Quicktime (.mov)

I had moment of free time while the morning show was on so I thought I would give you an extremely quick tour of the news station where I work. Worked with composer Robert Miller on "Happy Tears" recently. While setting up a Google clipping service for the film, found Mikael Carlsson's site Upcoming Film Scores, where he mentions Miller and the fact that he scored two other films on which I've worked: "Trumbo" and "The Caller". Have not intersected much with composers before, but because Rip's "Happy Tears" character might have had to learn to sing and play a Miller tune, we spoke and emailed back and forth on technical issues for a while. Gratifying to learn that this is not the first time we've worked on the same projects. Small world. "Trumbo" is in New York and Los Angeles theaters starting June 27, 2008 - check HERE for show times. Based on what I've seen, it's something well worth seeing.
