McConaughey's 'Surfer, Dude' Gets a TrailerMcConaughey's 'Surfer, Dude' Gets a Trailer
from Cinematical
July 18, 2008

Filed under: Comedy, Sports, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips The first trailer for Surfer, Dude, starring Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Willie Nelson has just surfaced over on Moviefone, and, well, I suddenly have the urge to take off my shirt and run into the water. The film stars McConaughey as surfer Steve Addington, who, upon returning home for summer, discovers the waves have disappeared and "The Man" wants him to star in new Virtual Reality Video Games. Dude has a hard time comprehending all this sudden change, and so he turns to his manager (played by a high-as-a-kite Harrelson) and his guardian-angel (Nelson) for guidance. Looks innocent enough; anyone up for catching some waves with McConaughey and friends? Permalink | Email this | Comments
Trailer for Simon Pegg's 'How to Lose Friends and Alienate People'Trailer for Simon Pegg's 'How to Lose Friends and Alienate People'

July 18, 2008

Filed under: Comedy, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips The poster for How to Lose Friends and Alienate People uses that horrible big red font you're no doubt familiar with -- that ubiquitous "goofy family comedy" lettering suggesting that it features Eddie Murphy in a fat suit and is terrible. God knows why. The movie stars Simon Pegg, not Eddie Murphy, and -- not surprisingly -- looks pretty funny. I actually didn't go nuts over Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, though I liked both a lot; on the other hand, I also enjoyed Run Fatboy Run, which seemed to leave most people cold. Maybe the answer is that I think Pegg is the genius and not (necessarily) Edgar Wright. Friends, based on Toby Young's memoir about being a British nobody who finds himself among New York's high society, working at a prestigious magazine, is another Wright-less Simon Pegg affair. Most of the laughs in the new trailer, which you can watch at the top of this post (it's considerably longer and better than the British teaser from a while ago), come courtesy of Pegg's unassuming physical comedy; I love that he never forces it or tries too hard, so that the slapstick seems to be a natural part of whatever character he's playing. The little dance he does about 40 seconds in might justify the film's existence all on its own. And I like that the dog gag at the end doesn't go quite where you'd expect. The movie also stars Kirsten Dunst, Jeff Bridges, Danny Huston, Gillian Anderson, and Megan Fox (probably not naked the whole time). It's supposed to come out October 3rd. Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Harry Potter, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips So you know that 15-second Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince teaser that's playing before The Dark Knight? Yeah, well it's just hit The Tube ... and you can see it above. Unfortunately, it's very much a teaser in that there's no actual footage from the film at all. All we hear is Dumbledore's voice saying, "Once again, I must ask too much of you Harry." Then there's some lights, and -- ta da -- we get the title: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Following the title, there's this: Select Sequences in IMAX 3-D. Yeah, I'm thinking that will look pretty damn cool. I wish we had more to give you Potter nuts right now (you can also check out our nifty gallery below), but this is all there is. However, a little wizard told me there might be some more gifts arriving soon ... Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince hits theaters on November 21. In honor of San Diego Comic Con (which starts next week -- OMG!), Entertainment Weekly has thrown together a pretty neat spread on a bunch of the films, TV shows and even comics. Yes, comics. I know, crazy for a comic convention, but what can you do. Although it's not technically part of their Con preview, up above you can see the first image of Jason from the upcoming Friday the 13th remake. The folks behind that flick will host a panel and debut the first trailer at Con. Below, we've pulled out five of the 26 photos (not including their other First Look photo batch) for you to preview before heading over to EW's site. They also have up a pretty sweet Watchmen piece, which gives another nice look at The Comedian. Featured below: Images from The Spirit, Terminator Salvation, Land of the Lost, Ninja Assassin and Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell. Which film are you most excited about? And it was amazing. Well, I thought so, anyway, and I'm one of the few people who said "ehh" after reading the graphic novel. Anyway, some of you bigger fans probably watched the new Watchmen trailer over and over and over again, forward and backward, in slow-motion and sped-up to compare the film with the panels in the book. But did you notice the odd lack of continuity in the sequence shown above? Unless you read MTV Movies Blog, or unless you were looking really hard for something like last year's 300 trailer surprise, there's a good chance you missed it. Fortunately, for you, I've done my best to highlight the anomaly after the jump.Continue reading 'Watchmen' Trailer's Spielberg Homaging Easter Egg Permalink | Email this | Comments
How to Sell 'American Teen': Psst, Don't Mention the "D" WordHow to Sell 'American Teen': Psst, Don't Mention the "D" Word

July 17, 2008

Filed under: Documentary, Movie Marketing, Images, Cinematical Indie, Paramount Vantage, Posters It's been a tough year for documentaries at the box office. How do you market a critically-acclaimed film about five Indiana high school teens that just happens to be a doc? The film is American Teen, and the hurrahs began at Sundance this year. James Rocchi described it as "an engaging, stylish and surprisingly smart piece of non-fiction entertainment." Paramount Vantage acquired distribution rights and then released a poster a couple of months later that intentionally reminded everyone of John Hughes' The Breakfast Club (note poster on the left, above). The company changed tactics somewhat with their campaign inviting people to become "fans" of the real-life characters in the movie. You can see more about this at the film's official site. Filmmaker A. J. Schnack questioned the wisdom of selling documentary subjects as marketable commodities. A new poster took a different approach (see above, right), though the trailer is still selling the nostalgia element. In the Los Angeles Times, Mark Olsen examines the marketing challenge in detail. Among other things, he quotes director Nanette Burstein as not wanting the Breakfast Club poster as anything more than a teaser. But Paramount Vantage exec Megan Colligan claims they are not "trying to hide the fact that it's a documentary ... One of the challenges of this movie is making people feel like this is a cinematic experience that will feel to them like a great teen comedy." American Teen opens in limited engagements on Friday, July 25. Do you plan on seeing American Teen? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
'Mandy Lane' Has Trailer, But Still No Firm Release Date'Mandy Lane' Has Trailer, But Still No Firm Release Date
from Cinematical
July 17, 2008

Filed under: Horror, Independent, Distribution, Movie Marketing, Cinematical Indie, Trailers and Clips This is turning into one long tease. All the Boys Love Mandy Lane debuted to generally good reaction at the Toronto film festival nearly two years ago. (James Rocchi called it "the best modern slasher flick since Scream.") Senator Entertainment picked up distribution rights after The Weinstein Co. / Dimension unexpectedly dumped it shortly before its scheduled release one year ago. Since then, we've been waiting ... and waiting ... and waiting. In the meantime, director Jonathan Levine moved on to his next film, the well-received The Wackness, and Senator Entertainment surprised us by releasing ... a new poster. (OK, we take what we can get.) At some point they also made a new trailer, which you can view at the trailer website for Fantasia, Montreal's amazingly awesome genre festival. They have a good write-up on the film, too, and you'll see James' review quoted on the page. (Sorry, you've already missed the two screenings there.) The Senator trailer doesn't look markedly different from The Weinstein Co. trailer, but, to its credit, it spells out even less than the previous one. The most irritating thing is probably where it promises to be out "This Spring." The poster promises "This Summer." Is that "This Year"? We do know that UK film lovers can buy it on DVD in just a few days; I'm not holding my breath much longer for this one. [Thanks to Bloody Disgusting.] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Drama, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips It's absolute trailer madness today! Not long after the very awesome Watchmen trailer premiered, Yahoo Movies! has thrown up a brand new Twilight trailer for you folks to feast on. Twilight, of course, is based on the super popular series of books that have teenagers everywhere reaching levels of mass hysteria. Me? I'm just stoked that vampires are cool again. In the film, which is directed by Catherine Hardwicke, Kristen Stewart stars as a teenage girl who moves to a small town, meets a boy and -- whoops -- discovers he's a vampire. I haven't read the book, but I imagine things then take a hairy (or is it toothy?) turn for the worse. Check out the trailer above and let us know what you think. Cinematical has been informed that the first teaser trailer for Terminator Salvation will most likely arrive tonight, around 9pm EST. Where? We do not know yet. Cinematical reader RossBond alerted us to the fact that Warner Bros. has sent out satellite coordinates for the worldwide trailer debut, and the time given for said coordinates is tonight between 9pm and 9:15pm EST. Additionally, there's also a 15-minute time slot tomorrow morning at 6am EST. However, if I were a betting man, I'd say the trailer will hit tonight. Fun stuff! Here's the film's synopsis: In the highly anticipated new installment of The Terminator film franchise, set in post-apocalyptic 2018, Christian Bale stars as John Connor, the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind. Filed under: Action, Thrillers, Dreamworks, Steven Spielberg, Movie Marketing, Posters Even though the inevitable backlash against Shia LaBeouf has already begun, you have to respect a guy who made his start in flicks like Dumb & Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd and made his way to the coveted spot of Spielberg's go-to leading man. Plus, he has a way of making me enjoy films that I normally wouldn't plunk down my hard-earned dollars for. Trust me when I say that it took a lot of restraint not to throw things at the screen during Transformers, so, I really hand it to the guy. Hopefully some of that magic will rub off on the Dreamworks action thriller, Eagle Eye. JoBlo now has the first look at the poster and Mr. LaBeouf seems to really be working the 'intense look' this time around. LaBeouf plays Jerry Shaw, a slacker who returns home after the mysterious death of his successful twin brother -- gee, do you think there will be a case of mistaken identities? Along with a single mother played by Michelle Monaghan, the two are framed as terrorists, and are threatened into becoming members of a cell plotting to assassinate a politician. Joining in on the fun are Rosario Dawson, and Billy Bob Thornton as the two government agents that are a step behind. Eye reunites LaBeouf with Disturbia director, D.J. Caruso, in an action thriller that was originally on Spielberg's to-do list. Now that we got a better look at the film, the longer trailer helped ease some of my concerns that instead of Rear Window, Caruso and company were looking to rip-off North by Northwest this time around. Eagle Eye hits theaters on September 26. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Horror, sci-fi, comic books, and tons of awesome geeks enjoying their own personal flavor of colorful nerd-dom. I enjoy these events, even though my own style of fandom prohibits me from dressing up like Bib Fortuna or Jayne Cobb. (I like to be amicably cynical at these events, so if I happen to make fun of your Buffy costume, please understand it's all in good fun.) So this past weekend I spent a little while perusing through the San Diego Comic-Con schedule, and here's what I've got a red circle on: -- First off, I will try to interview the female lead of Fox's The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. I'll be bringing a pair of defibrillator paddles just in case she smiles while I'm in the room. -- There's an event focusing on the new thriller Mirrors, which I wasn't that psyched for -- until I remembered who the director was. Plus if you don't like Kiefer Sutherland I suspect you're an evil communist robot. -- The Masters of the Web Panel is either going to be hilarious or it's going to devolve into the geekiest bar brawl you've ever seen. Our own Erik Davis will be discussing the state of internet movie nerd-dom with guys from JoBlo's, CHUD, AICN, IESB, Bloody-Dee, The Movie Blog, Movieweb, Latino Review, and (of course!) Dark Horizons. And since I know most of those lunatics, this should be one amusing little discussion panel.Continue reading Comic-Con '08: Scott's Most Geekily Anticipated Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

July 14, 2008

Filed under: Comedy, Fox Searchlight, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips I was pretty skeptical that Clark Gregg would be able to bring Chuck Palahniuk's novel Choke to the big screen. Fox Searchlight has launched the red band trailer for the dark comedy (along with four new clips), and I'll be the first to admit I was wrong. The first trailer was released back in May, and for anyone who was worried the book's more 'colorful' moments wouldn't be included, I'm here to tell you the filthiness is present and accounted for -- and I couldn't be happier. Along with the new trailer, there are also some additional clips with the added bonus of exotic dancers filling in the narration from the book -- bizarre, sure, but surprisingly entertaining. Now for the bad news: the site has one of those age-verification login pages that are pretty crappy at the best of the times, but luckily you can always count on You Tube. Choke is the story of sex addict Victor Mancini (played by Sam Rockwell), a con-man with the unusual tactic of choking in restaurants to earn money to care for his dying mother (Anjelica Huston). It almost sounds sweet, doesn't it? Well, it's not, and if you know anything about the work of Chuck Palahniuk, then you already know how messed up the story gets -- and I truly mean that as a compliment. Choke arrives in theaters on September 26, 2008. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

July 11, 2008

Filed under: Drama, Independent, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips Cinematical has just received this exclusive clip from the film Boy A, which I managed to catch earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival. Truth be told, I really dug it -- the film follows this kid named Jack (played by up-and-comer Andrew Garfield) who's released from prison after spending several years behind bars for a crime he committed as a child. Determined to get back on track, Jack, with help from his counselor Terry (Peter Mullan), tries to start over again in a new town with a new name and a new life. But how long will it be before his previous life catches up to him, and will Jack ever manage to build a successful future for himself if his past won't leave him alone? In the clip above, Jack and his work buddy are driving along on a road when something catches their eye. That something would eventually change the course of the film. Really solid movie from start to finish, and it's beautifully shot -- some of the best cinematography I've seen all year. Definitely seek this one out when it hits theaters on July 23. You won't be disappointed. Permalink | Email this | Comments

July 10, 2008

Filed under: Animation, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Family Films, Movie Marketing Quick! Who played the title role in WALL-E? If you answered "Ben Burtt," chances are you're either a hard-core geek or someone who stayed for the credits and thought, "Who the heck is Ben Burtt?" Burtt, well known to Star Wars and Spielberg fans for his superb work as a sound designer -- he's won two Oscars and received two Special Achievement Awards from the Academy -- picked up his first credit as an actor for providing WALL-E with a voice. And he drives home the point that cartoons, or "animated films" if you prefer, don't need celebrity voices anymore. Once upon a time, Robin Williams agreed to voice the part of Genie in Disney's Aladdin. Disney decided to capitalize on his stardom and advertised his supporting role heavily, probably the first time a celebrity voice was used to sell an animated film. Aladdin became the biggest hit of the year. This was the tipping point. Millions of adults, notably those without children who hadn't been convinced by the previous year's Beauty and the Beast, decided that cartoons were not just for kids anymore. The rest is history. Celebrity voices became the norm, and if one celebrity helped bring in the box office bucks, three or five or seven must be even better, and voice casts soon became filled with celebs both major and minor. Celebs had another advantage: they could give interviews and go on talk shows to promote the movie. Inevitably they'd say, "I wanted to do something my kids could see."Continue reading Fan Rant: Cartoons Don't Need Celebrity Voices Anymore Permalink | Email this | Comments

Not only will Hamlet 2 have a major presence at this year's San Diego Comic Con (we're still giving away tickets to that private screening, by the way), but they're also sending around these sweet Hamlet 2 goodie bags and have put together a sing-a-long video for the film's hit song, Rock Me Sexy Jesus. Filed under: Action, 20th Century Fox, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Images So while details surrounding the big-screen version of Dragonball have been kept relatively under wraps, it is wise to remember that nothing ever stays secret for long in the age of the internet. Just a few weeks after the first image of Justin Chatwin as the anime hero Goku hit the net, a crop of new magazine scans have been posted over at the Dragonball fan site, dbthemovie.com, with a few new shots of Goku, Bulma (Emmy Rossum) and Master Roshi (Chow Yun Fat). So even though this latest batch looks pretty similar to some of the earlier shots, at least these aren't watermarked. Based on the classic anime series, Dragonball is the story of the hero Goku and his mission to protect the famed 'dragonballs' from the evil Lord Piccolo (played by James Marsters). Throw in some romance in the form of Jamie Chung and you have a summer blockbuster, right? Well, for director James Wong's sake I hope so, because let's be completely honest: expectations for this film are not high. In fact, most fans are probably just praying that Wong and company don't ruin their favorite characters, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Dragonball is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 10, 2009. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips In a movie season of superheroes, it is no easy task to stand out -- even if you're bright red with a giant stone hand and a tail. But I dare you to find one other superhero out there with as much swagger and love for kittens as Hellboy. Check out this new trailer for the fantasy-action flick Hellboy II: The Golden Army above which, conveniently, poses as a helpful public service announcement from Hellboy (Ron Perlman) himself ... along with his trademark kitty. In Guillermo del Toro's second installment of the comic book adaptation, the uneasy truce between humanity and 'the invisible realm' has come to an end. A ruthless leader with the ability to walk in both worlds has gathered a mythical 'Golden Army' to, in so many words, kick ass and take names. So who else can we turn to other than Hellboy and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development to save the world once again? Del Toro started the first wave of viral sites for the film with HetFet and Squeaky Clean Waste Management back in April. But with the exception of hardcore fans, I don't think many of us got on board with the campaign. In the end, it was a better idea to have Red make the rounds with the American Gladiators, Chuck, and an appearance on The Actor's Studio with James Lipton. My personal favorite is his audition for mun2, but I'll leave it up to you to decide which one you like best. Hellboy II: The Golden Army opens this Friday. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Horror, Thrillers, Mystery & Suspense, 20th Century Fox, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips Not three weeks ago, I made first mention of a brief and bland teaser for the forthcoming horror film, Mirrors. Now, along comes IGN Movies with a red-band trailer that, at first, didn't do much for me. Blah blah blah, Jack Bauer as security guard for old department store, blah blah, former guard grew obsessed with surrounding mirrors, blah blah -- look, even Amy Smart is yawning after all that exposition. Oh, did I say 'yawning'? I meant 'tearing off her own jaw'. Yes, while we still seem to be saddled with a fairly ridiculous premise that's seen better and worse days, there's modest comfort to be taken that the R rating ain't exactly being shied away from. Let's face facts here, people: all it takes sometimes is a couple of nifty death scenes to make movies like this that much easier to stomach (well, some might argue the opposite). Sweet cast, huh? Based on the novel The Dying Animal by Philip Roth, and directed by Isabel Coixet (My Life Without Me), Elegy follows a cultural critic (Kingsley) who views his life as being in a state of "emancipated manhood" until, one day, a well-mannered student (Cruz) waltzes in and awakens a sense of sexual possessiveness in her teacher, the critic. In other words, her touch is toxic ... to him, at least. Seems rather exotic, and with two dynamos like Kingsley and Cruz in the lead, here's hoping Elegy awakens the sexual possessiveness in all of us. Wait ... that would be a bad thing, right? As folks are quarantined off in an abandoned mental hospital, one woman who remains unaffected pretends to be sick in order to take care of her husband, a doctor, who's now blind. Based on Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago's novel, and directed by the very talented Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener), Blindness definitely looks to bring the creep factor -- and with this outstanding cast, I'm sure it will claim a spot as this fall's first great flick. Don't close your eyes for too long, because Blindness hits theaters on September 19. Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Comedy, Drama, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Posters Cinematical has just received this exclusive teaser poster for Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys (click image to enlarge), starring Alfre Woodard and Kathy Bates as the matriarchs of two very different families being torn apart by greed and scandal. This marks the sixth feature from Perry, whose films usually tackle the inner workings of a dysfunctional family. Written and directed by Perry, The Family That Preys also stars Perry, Rockmond Dunbar, Sanaa Lathan, KaDee Strickland, Cole Hauser and Taraji P. Henson. I'm digging what I see from this poster; the art sorta plays tricks with your head if you stare at it long enough -- and I imagine that's the point as it feeds into the themes found throughout the film. The Family That Preys hits theaters on September 12. Permalink | Email this | Comments
