Cats seized from house

A total of 31 cats, most of them healthy but some needing treatment for parasites or disease, were rescued from a home on Black Walnut Way after authorities received an anonymous tip earlier this month. The cats had been using the home, owned by Morgan Hill resident Gene Medina, as a litter box, according to police. Medina has declined comment.In this video, we talk to police and an animal shelter worker about the seizure and cat hoarding, and we watch the cats being seized through video caught by a neighbor across the street.

Sorrel apartment fire

A three-alarm fire whooshed through the attics of a group of townhomes on Sorrel Way off Brega Lane in northwest Morgan Hill Thursday afternoon.No one was injured in the blaze, which began at approximately 2:30 p.m. It was completely contained within two hours, according to Santa Clara County Fire District Battalion Chief Ken Kehmna, but the cause was yet to be determined, and he said it was too early to determine damage costs.In this video, we show you the fire and talk with Kehmna about the blaze.

Fire erupts east of Henry Coe park

A spreading 50- to 75-acre fire is consuming large swaths of vegetation just east of Henry Coe Park. The fire started near Bullhead Reservoir off Bell Springs Road near Highway 152. It was first reported about 12:10 p.m. In this video, we show you a view of the fire from a rooftop in south Gilroy.

Unattended catfish starts small grease fire

Catfish was the culprit of a five-engine kitchen fire in north Morgan Hill Wednesday afternoon. CalFire, Santa Clara County, South County and San Jose fire departments responded to the blaze at 55 Kalana Ave., off Dougherty Avenue, caused by frying catfish left unattended.The fire was reported at 1:34 p.m. and the first engine responded at 1:40 p.m, according to CalFire South County Battalion Chief Derek Witmer. The fire was out in about five minutes, said Capt. Jason Falarski of the Santa Clara County Fire Department. Relay for Life

San Martin resident Leona Reif, a breast cancer survivor who underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatment to beat the disease that affects one out of nine women in the world was one of hundreds of volunteers who participated this weekend in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, an all-night, 24-hour event held at Community Park. Reif was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago and decided to have her breast removed. After the surgery, she asked her doctor if and when the cancer might return. Never was his answer, the best answer I ve ever heard, she said smiling. In this video, we show you the opening ceremonies of the relay.

It was a special Fourth of July weekend for a group of Morgan Hill residents and their guests, a purely American celebration with a foreign flair, as a group of dignitaries from one of Morgan Hill s four sister cities, San Martin de Hidalgo, Mexico.Though the finale of the day, the annual fireworks display, was canceled as a safety precaution due to the direction of the wind, the delegation from Mexico had their own finale, with a reception at the Community Center Saturday evening followed by a potluck dinner.In this video, Morgan Hill and San Martin de Hidalgo residents talk about what the sister city program and the visit mean to them.

More than 100 students who took longer than the traditional four years to graduate from high school had to wait just a little bit longer to celebrate their achievement Thursday night. Twelve of the 22 students who earned their high school diploma this past year and another 32 of the 108 students who earned their General Education Development credential, or GED, participated in the commencement ceremony. A thick brown haze settled over Gilroy today thanks to two lightning sparked wildfires in mountains to the west.The haze was concentrated near the source of the Whitehurst Fire on Mount Madonna, but extended across the valley. Windswept flames continued to scorch rural northwest Gilroy Sunday morning, threatening homes as a lightning-strike fire roared out of control.The fire had consumed more than 400 acres, caused no injuries and consumed no structures as of midnight Sunday morning. The hundreds of residents who evacuated throughout the night did so voluntarily until the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department required evacuations north of Day Road shortly after midnight, according to a deputy on the scene. By that time the fire was still uncontained.In this video, we talk with residents in houses north of Day Road about the approaching flames.

Dry lightning fire near Mount Madonna Park

Long lightning spears struck the ground Saturday afternoon sparking two fires in west Gilroy as thunder clapped continuously and rain fell intermittently in an unusual summer surprise delivered by Mother Nature.Firefighters are battling a blaze started by lightning in the vicinity of Whitehurst Road, south and west of Sprig Lake off Highway 152, which remains open.Firefighters set up a command post at Mount Madonna Inn at the top of Hecker Pass shortly after 2 p.m. Five engines and a command vehicle were on scene, including two Gilroy engines. A helicopter could be seen dropping water on the fire. By 3 p.m., the fire had consumed more than three acres and was being fought solely from the air with helicopters and planes dropping water and fire retardant. Smoke could be seen against the eerie dark gray clouds from the city. In this video, we show you the fire as seen from the East.

Smoke from Santa Cruz Fire peaks over mountains

A brush fire sparked up shortly before 2 p.m. in the Santa Cruz Mountains between Highway 1 and Larkin Valley Road in Watsonville closing roads and forcing residents to evacuate, a CalFire spokesman confirmed. Clouds of smoke could be seen from Gilroy and Morgan Hill billowing over the mountains.In this video, smoke can be seen over the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Informational protest at Saint Louise

Employees at Saint Louise Regional Hospital held an informational protest outside the hospital June 18. The employees, who are in negotiations with the hospital, are concerned about, among many things, decreased retirement benefits and the hospital being able to send nurses home mid-shift because of lack of work.In this video, Materials Management Technician Ernest Gonzales and Respiratory Therapist Susan Reddell speak about why they came to the protest.

Car crashes into house

A black, four-door sedan was speeding down Old Monterey Road Wednesday afternoon just after 3 p.m. with Morgan Hill police officer Steve Pennington in pursuit when it jumped the curb, went through a front yard and plowed into the front of a home. The driver and at least one passenger jumped out of the car and ran. When Pennington pulled over the car, it seemed to be a routine traffic stop. The car was on the side of the road on Monterey Road near Old Monterey Road. As Pennington was calling in the license plate number and driver's license of the driver, the driver sped off, with Pennington following in pursuit. Officers were still looking for the suspects. It was not clear how many suspects they were looking for or if the car was stolen.In this video, we talk with the homeowner who was home at the time about his house being hit with a car.
