At monochrom s Arse Elektronika conference last week in San Francisco, computer historian and agitator of Internet trolls everywhere, Jason Scott gave a brilliant in-depth look back on the early days of computer rendered pornography. From early line printers generating monochromatic pinups with X s to blocky pixelated 80 s video games with box covers much more alluring than the game play, Jason runs the gamut. Here s the video I shot of it with Jason s slides inserted.

monochrom's Taugshow #9

monochrom's Taugshow #9

from Things - Bre Pettis on June 27, 2007

monochrom presents: ++TAUGSHOW #9++ Friday, December 8, 2006 / 8:00 PM The flat hierarchies of talk shows are about as subversive as NYC Democrats smoking dope. But count us out! We won't produce a talk show. Nope. We produce a TAUGSHOW! Which means: we dig it. Our guests are geeks, heretics, and other coevals. A joyful bucket full of good clean fanaticism, crisis, language, culture, self-content, identity, utopia, mania and despair, condensed into the well known cultural technique of a prime time TV show. [taugen; Viennese slang: to dig/love/adore something]Host: Johannes Grenzfurthner Content Manager: Roland GratzerLocation: dietheater/Konzerthaus, Lothrinerstra e, Vienna.----------------------------------------------/// V. VALE In 1977, Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti each gave V. Vale, a clerk at City Lights Bookstore, $100 to begin publishing "SEARCH a correspondent at Geek Entertainment TV; the sex columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, and blogs for Gawker's Fleshbot.com and Metroblogging San Francisco. She was Wired's "sexy geek of 2005", she has survived being a Dorkbot SF presenter twice, and over ten years at Survival Research Laboratories -- where she does robotics, machine maintenance, industrial mechanical fabrication, welding, machine operation and robot performace production. Her podcast Open Source Sex has made iTunes cry for its mommy at least once. Hangl, who originally startet his career as actor and stage designer in 1993, is just as active in performative disciplines and medial spaces as he is in classical fine arts exhibition sites. His current works, which are not tied to one medium, are marked by breaks in reality, doublings, and in between realms. Hangl is involved in a broad range of activites, in which he frequently switches between the positions of artist, actor, producer and/or director. http://www.olliwood.com ----------------------------------------------/// Visuals:/// LA TRINCHERA La Trinchera (the trench) is an Austrian-Mexican sound and projection collective based in Mexico City. La Trinchera found its beginnings in the First "Festival of Improvisation" staged in Mexico City, february 2004. Since then, La Trinchera has operated as generator of impulses, as a "free fire zone" and as a call to experimentation. Risking the clash of individual creative spirit in the immediacy of a visual situation, La Trinchera has successfully brought together more than 20 artists of many diverse world views. Four of them are guests at monochroms taugshow: Rafael Balboa (handmade 16mm film-loops), Manuel Trujillo (handmade 16mm film-loops), Aisel Wicab (handmade slides), Doris Steinbichler (overhead projector).http://www.trinchera-ensamble.blogspot.com ----------------------------------------------/// Regulars:EVELYN F RLINGER, MA.----------------------------------------------/// Showband:PSSST...----------------------------------------------/// MONOCHROMTaugshow is a project by monochrom. But what is monochrom?monochrom is a worldwide operating collective dealing with technology, art, context hacking, and philosophy which was founded in 1993. They specialize in an unpeculiar mixture of proto-aesthetic fringe work, pop attitude, subcultural science, and political activism. Their mission is conducted everywhere, but first and foremost "in culture-archaeological digs into the seats (and pockets) of ideology and entertainment." Among their projects, monochrom has released a leftist retro-gaming project, established a one baud semaphore line through the streets of San Francisco, started an illegal space race through Los Angeles, buried people alive in Vancouver, and cracked the hierarchies of the art system with the Thomann Project. In Austria they ate blood sausages made from their own blood in order to criticize the grotesque neoliberal formation of the world economy. Sometimes they compose melancholic pop songs about dying media and they have hosted the first annual festival concerned with cocktail robotics. At the moment they're planning a conference about pornography as one of the driving forces of technological innovation. They also do international soul trade, propaganda camps, epic puppet theater, aesthetic pregnancy counseling, food catering, and - sorry to mention - modern dance. More infos: wikipedia monochrom

I'm here in Vienna, Austria for Roboexotica, a festival for cocktail robotics! That's right, machines and robots all about making cocktails and all the kitchy trappings of cocktail culture. I just woke up late and am drinking coffee (and the sun just went down, whoah) and ten minutes ago shot this short video of wandering around the machines and watching the builders doing tests and last-minute fixes...
