The index, which sunk to a record low of 83 in March, stood at 98.5 in May 2007. ---------------------------Oil tumbled for a second day this week, falling fell $5.75 to $135.62 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil dropped nearly $4 a barrel a day earlier. The retreat in crude oil also arrives amid escalating worries about deteriorating lending conditions and the still-slumping housing market.---------------------------Consumers are spending more, but they're using plastic to do so. The Federal Reserve reported that consumer credit increased at an annual rate of 3.6 percent in May. Use of revolving credit, which is primarily credit cards, rose at a 7.1 percent pace for the month. The rise pushed total consumer debt up by $7.8 billion to $2.57 trillion. The Belgian brewer says it will attempt to remove the company's entire board, naming an alternate slate that would include Adolphus Busch IV, the uncle of Anheuser CEO August Busch IV. Shareholders have the right to sue Anheuser's board if they feel the directors are not acting in their best interest. A majority of shareholders would need to back InBev's plan.-----------------------------------Microsoft and activist investor Carl Icahn say the software maker is willing to discuss a transaction with Yahoo if its shareholders elect a new board. In a letter sent to Yahoo shareholders, Icahn said he has little doubt that a new board would negotiate to sell the entire company and move "expeditiously" to replace Jerry Yang with a new chief executive.Microsoft has confirmed it is prepared to enter discussions after Yahoo's August shareholder meeting if a new board is elected.----------------------------------And... better late than never. Domestic airlines improved their on-time arrival rates in May, although more than one in five flights still showed up late to their destination. According to new government data, a total of 21 percent of commercial flights arrived at least 15 minutes late, were canceled or diverted. The nation's largest carrier says it could cut as many as 900 flight attendant jobs as it reduces flights to cope with record high fuel costs. Airlines and union officials said they would try to reduce layoffs through attrition or by employees voluntarily taking leaves of absence or sharing jobs.-----------------------------Microsoft reportedly isn't giving up on Yahoo. The Wall Street Journal says software giant has spoken with News Corp., Time Warner and others about buying Yahoo's search business. Yahoo has already rejected that offer - said to be worth $1 billion - as well as Microsoft's $47.5 billion bid to buy the company in its entirety.------------------------------Crude oil hit a record $143.91 a barrel before pulling back slightly to $143.55. The rise came after the Energy Department reported that crude supplies fell more than expected last week. Last week, the state's Court of Appeals dismissed four common law claims against the package. Tuesdays ruling said that seeking to recover money for two remaining claims would simply benefit the NYSE's private owners. ----------------------------------A judge has ruled against Wal-Mart in a class-action lawsuit, saying the retailer violated state labor laws 2 million times by cutting worker break time and forcing employees to work off the clock.
