This weekend I worked on writing a Java program that could read the simulation files that we have at my work of severe weather. We use the simulations for severe weather prediction, but its also cool to just look at the storm data. None of our previous visualization techniques could render the storm in 3D at an interactive rate. The program I wrote allows us to "fly" around the storm simulation while the simulation is playing back. It was constructed in 1958 by Texas Zinc, a mining company, to transport uranium ore from the "Happy Jack" mine in Fry Canyon, UT. to the processing mill in Mexican Hat. The three miles of unpaved, but well graded, switchbacks descend 1100 feet from the top of Cedar Mesa (on which you are now standing).
