July 10, 2008, Kentucky state government held a hearing to gather input from residents of Henderson County about the prospects of opening a new coal mine. For ninety minutes, people rose to speak of the ravages of blasting, dust and unsafe over weight trucks that will lessen their quality of life. No one spoke in favor. Eileen Timberlake spoke at length on a variety of issues connected with the proposed mine and ended her speech discussing issues that all Henderson residents would have. Of course, Kentucky, where coal is truly king, will ignore the demands of citizens and grant the permit to Pennsylvania Virginia Operating Partners because that is what they do. As the mining boom continues to drive the Australian economy there are concerns traditional land owners aren't having enough say in what they can do with their mining royalties. The federal government has suggested regulating mining proceeds for Aboriginal people but some landowners find that plan paternalistic and are concerned their money will be used to provide services that should be funded by state and federal governments.

Australia's sitting on some of the biggest natural gas fields in the world - and other energy-starved, ravenous nations are starting to bid for it. Australia will have to do some soul searching about how much we keep for ourselves and who to sell it to. Reporter, Ian Townsend.
