Although the plotline of this film does not hold strongly and is curiously similar to "The Emperor and the Assasin" (1998), this film, as you will see, has spectacular imagery and cinematography that make up for it's plot and continuity issues. This scene is important for martial arts film fans because it sees Donnie Yen and Jet Li together in a film for the first time since "Wong Fei Hung II: Naam yi dong ji keung" (1992). This is the first combat scene in the film, and is perhaps the most traditional in filming style. Zhang Yimou remarked that he wanted this scene to be close to the established form, but wanted to add something to the genre. Hence the "mental battle" part of the scene.
