The Merczateers strongly disapprove griefing and any other type of misbehavior that many usually tie to military activity in Second Life. Broadly speaking, the Merczateers undertake activities that may be classified as military role-playing; it interacts with other groups of its kind, adversaries or allies. Merczateers soldiers participate in battles, train and live at Badnarik, the Merczateers Headquarters. The group's ambitious engineering team creates all the content we need and more, be it armor, weapons, and any other items used for combat or daily activities, such as training. The Merczateers have had a rough and long history, a course that has taken it from the sim of Clear, passing through Isere, Adscita, Gangwon and Hjalmer. In all of these sims the group has had different interesting and challenging experiences that has defined and assisted it in reaching it's current level of proficiency. The Merczateer's current sim is Badnarik. It represents the highest, greatest and most powerful time of all the group's existence. Since moving into Badnarik, the Merczateers have established a solid air force, exceeding the air power of any other army. The organizational system has been refined and training has been improved. The active member count also has risen to phenomenal levels, and new weapons, gear and vehicles roll out of the factories and labs on a daily basis. On this day, we consider ourselves the premier military faction in Second Life. Although we've had many hardships, the group has stood tall during each and every one of them. It's up to every single Merczateer to keep this group strong, and make it rise above the rest.

As most of you know I was in the Army, it s how Glenna and I met, and I still have the upmost respect for the armed forces. Especialy groups like the Seals, Rangers, SF, etc. It takes a certain kind of person to want to and be able to make it through the training. For every 10 that volunter to be a Seal, 7-8 will not make it . I ve the privlage of meeting some Seals, some Rangers, even some MI6 fellows ..and I am glad there are those who are still willing to join the military. It s not an easy life, I know .I still think about my time and some things I will never forget I hope you enjoy this brief glimpse, these fellows are in week 2, they were training mid day, in the hot sun, running to the ocean, paddling out to sea, coming back in over the rocks and waves, in full uniform (when those things get wet, they weigh a ton) , carring the boat which weighs .what must feel like a ton, over their heads, it can t touch their heads, btw, any infranction, any deviation and you are corrected .all this while people are watching .tough is too mild a word for how that must feel ..but still they did it, over and over again for hours ..it makes me look at my fat gut and feel guilty

The Pentagon is recognizing that conventional kinetic military operations, which utilize armed force through direct action to kill or capture the enemy, have limited utility in countering the threats posed by militant extremism. Therefore, they are searching for and finding non-kinetic options other than the use of force to tackle the non-violent components of pressing security problems, both in and out of warzones. This may seem like an appropriate approach to America s new security challenges in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but it is not without controversy. The increasing involvement of the U.S. military in civilian assistance activities has launched a contentious debate about the role of the military in global development, and the relevance of global development to American national security. Non-governmental organizations argue that the militarization of development assistance threatens to undermine the moral imperatives of poverty reduction, the neutral provision of emergency relief, and the security of civilian aid workers in the field. Non-military government agencies, most prominently the U.S. State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development, have demonstrated a complex ambivalence about the subject. Even as their bureaucracies have changed to accommodate the military s growing role in providing assistance, some rank-and-file staff at USAID have argued that the military s programs do not constitute real development work, while a vocal minority of foreign service officers in the State Department have protested their deployment to promote political reconciliation in active warzones as hazardous assignments inappropriate for professional diplomats. Although the Pentagon is not of one mind on this issue, many Defense Department officials argue that these criticisms from NGOs and other parts of the government are overblown, and that these non-kinetic operations have the dual benefit of helping people in need while serving American interests, which is something that both the military, other government agencies, and the NGO community should welcome. The Pentagon has called on the State Department and the USAID to undertake more activities in direct support of American national security objectives, even as these agencies counter that their ability is constrained by years of chronic under-funding and staff reductions

It examines the U.S. Defense Department's efforts to counter threats such as extremism, poor governance and human suffering by aiding indigenous populations, and considers the use of development activities performed by civilian agencies to achieve the same goal. Based on original research conducted on the ground in East Africa and at US military commands around the world, this report argues that the military's efforts to achieve security through development can only be successful if they are rooted in a global strategy that puts development priorities, or "human security," first.
