What the Hell is Ogg Theora, and Should We Care? Yup, Mike Hudack Explains

NEW YORK , NY -- There is a powerful movement underway for open video standards for the Web. The biggest implementation will be seen very soon on Wikipedia where you will watch videos in an open source video application called Ogg Theora. The imminent release of Firefox 3.5 will come with HTML 5 which allows video to be embedded into the Web page, no plug-in's needed. The World Wide Web Consortium (WC3), and many in the open source movement, believe that there should be a free way to publish videos on the Web, without the need to pay royalties to patent holders. Daily Motion, the big Paris-based video sharing site has launched a limited project using Ogg Theora.Last weekend, I attended the Open Video Conference and interviewed key thought leaders and executives from the Mozilla Foundation, Wikipedia, Kaltura, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Adobe and others. Oh, and we caught up with BoingBoing's Xeni Jardin too!We will be publishing several of these videos over the next week or two.As a primer, I thought it would be helpful to have our pal Mike Hudack, CEO and co-founder of Blip.tv, give us an overview of Ogg Theora and the importance of the open source movement. I spoke with Mike at the conference on Saturday afternoon. How all this shapes up is tough to say, but it is something we need to watch. My colleague Liz Gannes published an excellent industry overview on open video on Sunday on NewTeeVee. Stephen Shankland at CNET has an overview on the implications of Firefox 3.5 and HTML 5.Nearly two years ago, I interviewed Philippe Le Hegaret Architect Domain Leader of the World Wide Web Consortium on many of these topics. Many of his visions are about come to fruition. I have published this video on this post as well.Andy Plesser, Executive Producer

Blip.tv has New Measurement Tool for Quicktime Downloads

Video downloading via iTunes is a massive platform for video producers. For publishers and advertisers, there are problems: Although publishers know who subscribes or downloads videos via iTunes, they don't know much more. Moreover, advertising served into videos are "baked-in" to files. Blip.tv, the New York online video publishing site, has a solution, according to CEO and co-founder Mike Hudack. Mike made the announcement of this new product offering at our online video roundtable at the msnbc.com digital cafe. TechCrunch co-editor Erick Schonfeld, who was a moderator of the conference, first blogged about this development a few moments ago. There are other companies which serve dynamic advertising into downloadable media. Kiptronic and Podaddies are some of the best established. It may well be that the tracking aspect is the big news here. Any thoughts? Please comment.More on Mike and Blip.tv in this story by Peter Kafka at AllThingsD. Peter started this week. Congrats on new gig.-- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer
