(1946) Licia Albanese (born July 22, 1913, in Bari, Italy) is a distinguished Italian soprano. Albanese made her debut in 1934 at the Teatro Municipale in Bari, singing in "Bohème," and in the following year appeared at La Scala as Lauretta in "Gianni Schicchi." She soon achieved great success all over the world, especially for her performances of "Carmen," "L'amico Fritz" and "Madama Butterfly," and in 1940 was invited to the Metropolitan in New York, where she was to become a regular guest, taking American citizenship in 1945. A lyrical soprano of intense musicality, she took part in famous recordings with Beniamino Gigli and Arturo Toscanini.
