Elizabeth Taylor - History - by Richard BassettElizabeth Taylor - History - by Richard Bassett

October 04, 2008

For seven and a half decades, Dame Elizabeth Taylor has lived and loved life to its fullest. It is a philosophy that she still believes in today. As the tides of her life ebb and recede, she always comes forth refreshed and ready to take on new projects and to conquer new territory. On September 26, 2008, she attended the annual Macys Passport Fashion Show Gala. This AIDS fund raising event has raised thirty million dollars thus far. Dame Elizabeth has been with Macys since its conception a quarter of a century ago. This year she bravely took the stage and, against odds, gave a powerful speech on the continual importance for raising money for AIDS research. Now is not the time to let it slide. She has made AIDS philanthropy her lifes mission and shows no sign of slowing down. Aside Mother Teresa, she is one of the main humanitarians of her time. In viewing these short film clips, please donate to the cause that has become Dame Elizabeth Taylors life mission for over two decades. The eradication of AIDS in the world. Until such time, The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation funds programs and organization that give direct care to the population of millions affected with HIV/AIDSwhether it is direct care or related/ associated services. So many people are now living longer with AIDS/HIV due to advances in viral medication technology, but the impact of living a life with AIDS is far reaching. AIDS affects all of us, in one way or another. Generations of young people are not conscious of the 1980s. The face of AIDS has changed since the time when those who were ill were visibly stigmatized, akin to being lepers. Now, those with HIV/AIDS live life among the general population attempting to cope with the disease. Sometimes, silently. Emotionally, the impact is just the same as those first diagnosed. Fear. The only solution is to rid the world of this disease, therefore opening a technological highway aimed to ignite the remedy to so many other diseases as well. Any amount of time or money will push this development ahead, not behindnever behind! Review: How to Lose Friends & Alienate PeopleReview: How to Lose Friends & Alienate People

Entertainment journalists are very often the last line of defense between movies/movie stars and the general public. We work for the public and are available to disentangle cinematic takes on baseball, superheroes, various wars, Elizabethan times, romantic conquests, car chases, or what have you. But when the material is more or less about us, it's much harder to find some perspective. Based on a memoir by British journalist Toby Young, the very funny new film How to Lose Friends & Alienate People is tough going at first, but it ultimately avoids relieving itself where it eats. And it has an underlying sweetness that should appeal to a large cross section of movie people and people who like movies. Simon Pegg stars as Sidney Young, an anarchic British journalist who runs his own tiny, gutsy rag, the Post Modern Review. He measures himself against the kinds of celebrities he can get close to, but also despises them and loves to poke holes in their images. When he runs a nasty story on a powerful New York publisher, he receives a phone call and a job offer. Soon he finds himself standing in the office of Sharps magazine and its editor-in-chief, Clayton Harding (Jeff Bridges). Sidney idolizes Clayton for a more hardcore magazine he used to publish, and considers Sharps a sellout, but also loves the power and the paycheck it can bring. With his outsider attitude, he immediately begins screwing up and alienating all his co-workers, including powerful publicist ("I don't like that word") Eleanor Johnson (Gillian Anderson) and co-worker Alison Olsen (Kirsten Dunst). But he's so persistent (and they had such a good, solid "meet-cute") that Alison eventually tolerates him and then warms up to him. To get the full stories, please watch previous posts for additional information. Thank you I have included some memorable interview clips with Dame Elizabeth Taylor as a guest from the period of circa 1986 through 2006. Please enjoy this series of short interviews as Elizabeth searches her soul and touches upon her personal history, her self image and self esteem, her loved ones and family and always AIDS. She reviews her own personal timeline regarding her battles with AIDS Fundraising and making certain that important people listened. There is a shy quality that we see, far from the zealous characters she has portrayed onscreen. Elizabeth Taylor talks openly and honestly in detailing some of the difficulties that she has survived in life. She is a true survivor in every sense of the word. Upon watching these clips myself, I fell in love with her all over again. She definitely leaves her ego at the front door as she approaches some deep subject matter all in an effort to allow us to know and understand the real Elizabeth Taylor, and not the Elizabeth Taylor we read about in the tabloids. Her honest is refreshing and it suits her so well. Again, enjoy the upcoming, A Few Words clips. Kids are fascinated with monsters and scary stuff, so why aren't there more good kid-friendly horror movies? With the exception of TV, I only found a handful, including such gems as Ernest Scared Stupid (1991), Hocus Pocus (1993) and The Haunted Mansion (2003). On the plus side, there's The Watcher in the Woods (1980), Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) and The Witches (1990). The problem is pretty obvious: these movies are either too scary or too stupid, and the middle ground is a very thin line. So if nothing else, writer Chris McKenna and director Anthony Leondis, both making their big-screen debut with Igor, have conjured an uneasy way to pull it off, even if the experience will be radically different for both parents and kids. Igor is set in a perpetually cloudy kingdom where mad scientists compete in the annual "evil science fair." The winner's diabolical creation will be used to blackmail the rest of the world so that the kingdom can continue to support itself. John Cusack voices the hunchbacked title hero, an assistant who dreams of inventing his own creations. When his master (voiced by John Cleese) meets with an accident, he gets his chance. The first thing off his workbench is a giant monster called Eva (voiced by Molly Shannon), who accidentally turns out to be good. There's a whole subplot about another evil scientist Dr. Schadenfreude (voiced by Eddie Izzard) who wants to steal Eva so that he can win the competition and overthrow the king (voiced by, of all people, Jay Leno!). MGM Mirage Site-specific Public Art Inside the Bellagio Conservatory, Las Vegas, Nevada U.S.AMGM Mirage Site-specific Public Art Inside the Bellagio Conservatory, Las Vegas, Nevada U.S.A

About the Video ClipIn 2003, when work began on the Cafe Bellagio refurbishment in Las Vegas, U.S based conceptual artist Chitra Ramanathan was chosen to create two large-scale paintings for the site, located inside the Bellagio Conservatory and Indoor Botanical Gardens in Las Vegas. This site-specific public art project for MGM Mirage has two paintings each measuring 4 feet X 6 feet in dimension signed by the artist, on permanent display inside the Bellagio Hotel since October 2004. The painting continues to attract attention from visitors worldwide. For more details, please see under Trivia below. About Chitra Ramanathan Educator and professional artist Chitra Ramanathan's current series of mixed media paintings portray the mental emotion of happiness as a visual entity through intense colors and multiple layers of textures that attract light from various angles, pushing the boundaries of her paintings beyond the confines of their two-dimensional surfaces. She is inspired by short-lived garden blooms and constantly changing seasons in nature, characteristics that attribute to the ephemeral, fleeting and enticingly beautiful happiness' "formless form": a phrase she has coined to describe her concept. The hint of circles almost always present in her work signify the cycle of human life: trying times followed by happy phases in a positive sense, and of life and rebirth influenced by her roots from India. Her paintings have been described as "tactile works that resonate with a quiet harmony" and "Simply luxurious" by Manhattan Arts, New York. To quote from an excerpt from an interview with the artist, "Chitra's paintings exemplify her love of nature as well as the subjectivity of each individual's unique pursuit of happiness. Her painting procedure often entails making mental notes of a scene in nature, including the lighting, colors, and textures. She then uses these impressions in her studio to replicate the subject matter in an abstracted form, using rich physical textures, intense colors, and varied media". Chitra works with acrylic, and occasionally uses sand and oil. Her images have a floating quality to them. They are effervescent, airy and very different from the detailed miniature portraits and landscapes she painted while living in India. She works on Plexiglas, rice paper, linen, and occasionally canvas. The Plexiglas she uses is transparent, and contains different textures. Its uneven surface holds paint in unexpected ways. By painting on both sides of the Plexiglas, the images on the backside appear to be emerging from within the painting. Rice paper and linen, also transparent, achieve similar results. In the mid 1990s, her work was exhibited in different galleries on Soho Broadway, New York that attracted the attention of art critics. Follwing this, several of her colorful mixed media paintings are owned by art collectors around the United States and in Europe. Commissions include a series of post-card paintings for the Florida International University Department of Art, Miami, Florida in 2005 to coincide with Art Basel Miami 2005 and a series of ten post-card sized paintings for the Indianapolis Museum of Art's permanent exhibit tilted "Gallery of the Machine" in 2006 where paintings were sold on a vending macheine. Recently completed commission entailed creating a permanent wall mural measuring 13.8 feet wide and 4 feet high, for the front lobby of Crooked Creek Elementary School, Marion County, Indianapolis, this March 2008 site specific public art project made possible through a grant to the school by the Metropolitan School Foundation which is a public school district in Indianapolis. Earlier site specific public art commissions and installation art projects include two large paintings for the MGM Mirage that are permanently housed inside the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Las Vegas since 2004, and five large-scale multi-media paintings for the Arts Council of Indianapolis at Chase Towers near Monument Circle, Indianapolis from July 2006-February 2007, a project supported by the Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission. Academically, Chitra Ramanathan's work has attracted invitational Visiting Artist lectures to educational institutions such as most recently the Royal Academy of Arts/Royal Academy Schools in London, England. Chitra earned her second Bachelors of Fine Arts in Painting with Honors in 1993 during which period she allotted time to study Painting and Art History in Paris, France, with visits to Giverny, France that influenced her later work. Her paintings are currently represented by Artprice.com Auction House, France. Featured film captures work in progress of a permanent wall mural titled "Our Global Connections". Contemporary conceptual artist Chitra Ramanathan was chosen to create this wall painting as Artist in Residence. The project involved creating a large-scale wall mural for the front lobby of Creek Elementary School, Marion County Indianapolis, Indiana U.S.A, to reperesent the international focus of the school. Chitra started by painting the base, while each student was allotted a portion to paint or stick collage material to represent icons from different parts of the world. All 505 students from Kindergarten to grade 5 was given a chance to know and work with the artist. After all students had contributed, Chitra worked to unify the painting in her unique textural abstract style that is typical of her extensive, known body of work, without altering the students' contribution. To quote the art teacher in charge of related administration, "Students had so much fun working on the mural!" The final piece measures 13.8 feet wide and 4 feet high and was created between March and April 2008. This site-specific public art commission made possible by a grant to the school by the Washington Township School Foundation, Indiana. It was completed April 5, 2008. The event was publicized in the local media. In Hollywood, it started in 1942 when she amazed the film industry by having the face of a woman at the age of 12; by the age of 16 she was playing wives and mothers of screen. Each passing year her beauty never lessened. It only grew. But internally, Elizabeth was beautiful...as well. And this aspect reflected in her external appearance. Like everyone, there have been so peaks and valleys in her life but her beauty has always sustained her. In viewing these short film clips, please donate to the cause that has become Dame Elizabeth Taylor's life mission for over two decades. The eradication of AIDS in the world. Until such time, "The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation" funds programs and organization that give direct care to the population of millions affected with HIV/AIDS...whether it is direct care or related/ associated services. So many people are now living longer with AIDS/HIV due to advances in viral medication technology, but the impact of living a life with AIDS is far reaching. AIDS affects all of us, in one way or another. Generations of young people are not conscious of the 1980's. Any amount of time or money will push this development ahead, not behind...never behind! This is a short trailer for my fic: "Time After Time" General Jack O'Neill goes back in time after having lost Carter to change the past but finds that agenda hard to follow through. Colonel O'Neill isn't too excited to see his older self either, not when he realizes that the General version of him is growing closer to Carter then he is. Can one really be jealous of oneself? This is just pics, no videoclips, because my WMM is acting up. Disclaimer: I own nothing about this except the story idea! The characters, locations etc are MGM's, not mine. Filed under: Sports, New Releases, MGM, Theatrical Reviews, Family Films Last year I saw Gracie, a movie about a teenage girl who wants to play high-school soccer in the late 1970s, when the game was considered a males-only sport in America, and faces a lot of opposition from her school. I finished my review with the line, "If it were football, would we be agreeing more with Gracie's opponents?" The Longshots gives us the opportunity to consider that question. Can we sympathize with, and cheer on, a girl who wants to succeed as a quarterback in an all-boys' football league? The answer is yes, because The Longshots focuses on characters and personal relationships and as a result, feels richer and more satisfying than the standard sports-genre film. The story is simple and except for the girl-quarterback angle, old-fashioned in a Capra-esque way. Jasmine (Keke Palmer) is a middle-school loner and misfit in a small town hit by economic troubles. Her mom Claire (Tasha Smith) has to work longer hours at the diner -- dad ditched town and family several years ago -- and Jasmine is still too young to be left alone after school. So Claire pleads, nags and finally bribes her husband's brother Curtis (Ice Cube), an unemployed ex-football player, to keep an eye on his niece Jasmine. Of course they can't stand each other at first, but eventually Curtis discovers that Jasmine has an excellent throwing arm and teaches her how to be a quarterback. Meanwhile, the town's playground football team is languishing, and one thing they're missing is a decent quarterback, sooo ...Continue reading Review: The Longshots Permalink | Email this | Comments
