Final presentations for the New School's Virtual Learning Environments class in Second Life on 29 July 2009.Background: Each of the students chose one of two projects to work on throughout the semester, creating multi-modal educational projects with two NYC nonprofits - an opportunity to put the work done during the semester into real-life action and learn about Virtual Learning Environments while being in them.Syllabus More project infoProject 1: Integrating curricula from regions of conflict The idea is to take educational curricula, like history textbooks, from regions where conflict or tension exists, and compare and contrast them. For example, Haiti and the Dominican Republic have integration issues. We will take sections from historical textbooks culled from contacts in Haiti and the DR, upload the content and deconstruct it. We will roll this out as a pilot for Globalhood's Global Potential program. We will create the underlying online framework and social network in Ning as well as organize the content, create rich media for it, and conceptualize the implementation. The result will be a modular curriculum based in a social network, by which future students can compare/contrast/deconstruct textbooks from conflict regions and therefore become more critical learners. (Think news as 'game', where you could perhaps play the news like a game, by engaging in social change actions). Envision how news matched with activism could be presented in Metaplace, which is a groundbreaking new online virtual world that is accessible from an internet browser. How would you create community around this? What kinds of interactivity do you envision? How could teachers use this information? How would you keep it playful and game-like?
