Home movies are motion pictures made by amateurs, often for viewing by family and friends. When the hobby began, home movies were produced on photographic film, but availability of video cameras and camcorders and digital storage devices has made the making of home movies easier and more affordable to the average person. The boundaries between consumer movie-making and professional movie-making are becoming increasingly blurred as prosumer equipment often offers features previously only available on professional equipment. In recent years, clips from home movies have been available to wider audiences through television series and Internet online video-sharing sites such as YouTube. The popularity of the Internet, and wider availability of high-speed connections has provided new ways of sharing home movies, such as video weblogs (vlogs), and video podcasts.

Go shoot Armed with a camera, mics and your own ambition and imagination, you're about as free as a filmmaker can be. This is where guerrilla filmmaking really shines. Make sure you capture a variety of footage, to allow for maximum flexibility in the edit suite. Experiment and be creative with your angles. Get wide, medium and closeup shots to intersperse with your high- and low-angle shots. When grabbing B roll, force yourself to count to ten before moving onto the next shot. That may feel like an eternity in the moment, but it'll feel just right when it comes time to edit the footage.

The 30 rule is a basic film editing guideline that states the camera should move at least 30 between shots of the same subject. This change of perspective makes the shots different enough to avoid a jump cut. Too much movement around the subject may violate the 180 rule. Following this rule may soften the effect of changing shot distance, such as changing from a medium shot to a close-up. Some consider this rule to be outdated. A jump cut is a cut in film editing where the middle section of a continuous shot is removed, and the beginning and end of the shot are then joined together. The technique breaks continuity in time and produces a startling effect. Any moving objects in the shot will appear to jump to a new position. In classical continuity editing, jump cuts are considered a technical flaw. Most cuts in that editing style occur between dissimilar scenes or significantly different views of the same scene to avoid the appearance of a jump. Every effort is made to make cuts invisible and unobtrusive.

Lara Favaretto: Comincio ch'era finita (It Began While It Was Already Over). Exhibition at gallery Klosterfelde (www.klosterfelde.de) at Zimmerstrasse, Berlin. From the press release: Comincio ch'era finita is the main work lending its title to the exhibition: in the darkened gallery space around wooden platform with textile walls and an iron pole is spinning around its own axis, reminiscent of both, a merry-go-round, a cinema theatre and a mobile war tent. It is turning at accelerated speed, as if there had been an electrical short circuit and the machine has gone crazy, making the barely lit inside al-most invisible. The title, It Began While It Was Already Over, refers to the infinite cyclical movement of the spinning merry-go-round, a movement without a beginning or end, the futility of an action that exists for its own sake. Taken literally the title also expresses a feeling of sadness and frustration inherent in the exhibition - the melancholy of a missed encounter, and the nostalgic longing for a past event. The exhibited works all play out a deliberate denial of access to an insight or understanding: the merry-go-round is spinning so fast that the spectator's gaze cannot fully grasp what's inside the tent; a film that is originally 14 minutes long is shown in the extremely abridged version of one second, a "collapsed" movie, leaving the viewer with a strong sense of resignation; and the suitcase dropped in the gallery room, is hiding the personal belongings of a person that we don't know and that will always remain a stranger to us.
