La sandía (patilla) es una planta herbácea, anual, rastrera, perteneciente a la familia de las cucurbitáceas cuyo nombre científico es Citrullus lanatus .Propia de cultivos intensivos, gracias al cultivo forzado y a su protección en invernadero se ha ampliado el tiempo de su permanencia en el mercado, habiendo dejado de ser una fruta exclusivamente de verano.La plantación de sandía (patilla) en invernadero se lleva a cabo con semillas previamente germinadas en semillero, desde diciembre hasta el mes de abril, ganando precocidad con respecto a la siembra directa.La germinación comienza con la aparición de los cotiledones. Cuando la plántula tiene unos 8 cm de altura, empieza a aparecer la yema terminal, que se va alargando, apreciándose rudimentos de nuevas hojas.
