Carlo Petrini: Good, Clean, and Fair: Part 6
from Cooking Up A Story: FOOD NEWS July 07, 2008
Carlo Petrini, in this final installment, argues for economic respect, and fairness to the small farmers of the world. Economy and ecology, he reminds us, share the same roots, and that it is local economies that will save our society, and it’s the global economy that threatens to destroy it. For those who may think of Slow Food in terms of being an organization striving to promote better conditions for farmers, and better awareness for people about the food they eat—while true—the ideas laid out by this founding visionary are a trumpet call for an entirely new world order.

A WARNING FROM THE PAST
from The Radio Ecoshock Show July 03, 2008
This week's Radio Ecoshock broadcast is about past greenhouse worlds, quick climate shifts, and mass extinctions caused by changes to the atmosphere. Dr. Andrew Glikson studies comet/asteroid impacts, volcanoes, and past climates. He's been doing it for 40 years. While studying the oldest record of life on Earth, in the Australian outback, Glikson found a relationship between comet or asteroid impacts and the generation of living things. We do not yet know whether life forms (such as bacteria) actually arrived from outer space - or whether the impact generated energy and unique chemical conditions that caused certain natural reactions to duplicate themselves. All that is a side issue to this speech, which is an education on the dominating role of the atmosphere in determining the state of life on Earth. Whether caused by impacts or volcanoes, or even gradual tilts in the Earth axis, a changing atmosphere can make life luxurious - or kill off up to 90% of all species. The science explained by Andrew Glikson in this speech find a parallel in the book "Under A Green Sky" by Peter Ward, a scientist in Washington State. We are talking, for example, about the Permian mass extinction, about 200 million years ago. The ocean lost it's oxygen, and life surived in only a few pockets of the ocean. Most land species were exterminated. Of the five past great extinctions (we are apparently living in the 6th extinction now) - FOUR WERE CAUSED BY CLIMATE CHANGE. Not hits from outer space. For the survival of our species, we need to know what happened - and few people alive know more than Andrew Glikson, as he summarizes not only his own research, but the general science now developing in the field. This speech from Australia National University explains our current shift toward a hot-state planet - much faster than ever before. It has been slightly modified for radio, (to fit in an hour) with the permission of Dr. Glikson. Learn about your planet (or die?) Wild Dogs feed pups: Video
from Wildcast - African bush adventures live-blogged to a screen near you July 03, 2008
When I arrived at the den in the dark this morning one of the adults barked at me and left. And for the rest of the day there was no sign of the adults or the pups. I could hear the pups squabbling in the den but they didn’t venture out without the adults there. Midday I left the den for a few hours. This is usually a time when nothing happens. (I’ve noticed it with these dogs and also the previous pack I’ve followed. Midday is their main sleep time. Night time too.) Back again in the early afternoon and still not a peep from the adults. As the light was fading and only just enough for me to film, the pups came out to play on their own without the adults being there. This is brilliant news. So hopefully in the days to come they will now be brave enough to play outside the den! At very last light the alpha female and alpha male arrived to feed the pups. They were both well fed. I’m not sure if they killed this afternoon or if this was from the morning’s hunt. They seemed oblivious to me in the hide. Great stuff. But after a while when I moved the male saw me and barked. But only once. The pups of course scattered but were soon out again looking for scraps. As it got dark I packed up. This time the dogs were a little more serious in their barking but I like to think they’re getting used to me. Not too likely after only a week or so at it. It also seems that these are the only 2 adults in the pack. There’s been no sign of the other female. Has she maybe gone off and had pups on her own? Has she teamed up with Whisky? Wouldn’t that be the best!

TERRA 435: Burning the Future: Coal in America
from TERRA: The Nature of Our World July 03, 2008
Do you ever wonder where the juice to charge your iPod was produced? Like over half the electricity in the United States, probably from a coal-fired power plant run on coal from the mountains of West Virginia. This reliance on coal raises a score of questions about people, land, and a region's future. In the first of a three-part series of excerpts from "Burning the Future: Coal in America", we meet some of the West Virginians affected by our country's coal policy and see some of the health and ecological costs wrought by it. Ophthalmologists Issue New Recommendation in Effort to Prevent Eye Injuries at Home
from NewsInfusion - Videos July 01, 2008
What do a bungee cord, a pan of frying bacon and lawn-care chemicals have in common? They are just a few of the common items around the house that can cause eye injuries, which a new study from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Academy) and the American Society of Ocular Trauma (ASOT) reports are increasingly occurring at home. The new Eye Injury Snapshot, a clinical survey of eye injuries across the U.S., found that nearly half of the 2.5 million eye injuries that Americans suffer annually now happen in and around the home in common places like the lawn, garden, kitchen or garage.

Carlo Petrini: Give Value To Food-Part 5
from Cooking Up A Story: FOOD NEWS June 30, 2008
Food prices in Europe, and The United States, have gone down markedly since 1970; when the average family spent 32% of their earnings on food, now that figure is 13%. What’s wrong with cheap prices for food? It promotes mass food production, increases the risk of Mad Cow Disease, and creates more pollution directly related to food production.
