NBC knew exactly what it was doing when it cleared the national stage for Toronto Raptors superstar Vince Carter. After the network shifted its Sunday afternoon schedule to give Carter exclusive coverage, the high-flying forward put on a show worthy of its own time slot. He scored an NBA season-high 51 points as the Raptors held on for a 103-102 win over the co-starring Phoenix Suns. Carter, whose mother was in attendance, knocked down 17-of-32 shots, all 13 of his free throws and surpassed his career-best and team-record 47-point effort against Milwaukee here on January 14. "I didn't show it, but inside I was very excited," Carter said. "I need some time to let it sink in. It's special for (my mother) to be here and witness all 51 of them. I know she's excited, probably moreso than me. When I put the last basket in, for 51, I felt like a little kid inside. I looked at my mom and she almost jumped right out of her seat." Philadelphia's Allen Iverson and the Suns' Cliff Robinson had 50-point games earlier this season. "The young legend grows," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "There was no one more surprised than me by what he did today. I told him before the game not to embarrass himself out there. Tonight epitomized what the kid is supposed to do. He drove to the basket more and got fouled more. The most impressive part is that Vince lets his teammates get involved when he's having such a great game." The 6-7, 215-pounder and reigning Rookie of the Year also grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals in 43 minutes. He even dominated the commercial breaks as national affiliates rolled his Gatorade spots. "We need to learn how to win the game with the spotlight on us, and that's what today was about," Vince Carter said. Carter often is mentioned as the heir to fellow North Carolina alumnus Michael Jordan's throne as the league's most exciting player. He displayed a variety of spectacular dunks and off-balance jumpers, thrilling the crowd at the sold-out Air Canada Centre as well as millions watching at home. "It was a good coming-out party for Vince on NBC," Phoenix point guard Jason Kidd said. "We tried to contain him. He could score 70, but as long as we had a chance to win, that would be fine." Jordan surpassed the 50-point mark 38 times in his illustrious career. Tracy McGrady, Carter's distant cousin, scored 15 points for Toronto, which snapped a three-game home losing streak and earned a split in the season series with Phoenix. "You're excited that you're on national television, but you've got to concentrate on playing the ball we've been playing and not show off. That's what we did today," McGrady said. "Vince was unstoppable. When a guy is that hot, you've got to keep feeding him." Penny Hardaway and Rodney Rogers each scored 28 points for the Suns, who have dropped consecutive games since a season-high eight-game winning streak. April 24, 2008 SALT LAKE CITY -- Scoring seven points in a quarter is normally nothing for Tracy McGrady. With his team down 2-0 in the opening round of the playoffs, it meant everything to the Houston Rockets. McGrady scored all of those seven in the final 3:29, finally snapping out of a fourth-quarter slump and finishing with 27 to lead Houston to a 94-92 victory against the Utah Jazz on Thursday night that gave the Rockets life in a series that could have been headed for a sweep. "This was a very emotional win for us," said McGrady, who had scored one point total in the fourth quarter of the first two games of the series. "We played like we really didn't want to go home early. We played with a lot of passion and a lot of heart." The Rockets were trailing the best-of-7 series 2-0 and coming to Utah, where the Jazz had the best home record in the NBA. One of Utah's four losses in Salt Lake City was to Houston, which won the Jazz's home opener and did it again when it mattered much, much more. Rafer Alston added 20 points and five assists in his first game in nearly two weeks. Carl Landry had 11 rebounds and two blocks, swatting away Deron Williams' shot that could have won it for the Jazz just before the buzzer. Landry also sacrificed his left front tooth, courtesy of an elbow from Utah's Carlos Boozer in the second quarter, and had a huge gap in his post-game grin. Landry said he was seeing double after the elbow and was bleeding from the mouth as he was led to the locker room, but was back for the second half. "This was a big game. It doesn't matter if you've got a hurt toe or a hurt back, whatever the case may be," Landry said. "No matter what it is, football, hockey, basketball. It's part of playing sports." Game 4 will be Saturday back in Utah, where the Jazz were 37-4 in the regular season. Instead of playing for a sweep, the Jazz will try to avoid doing the same thing Houston did last year in the opening round against Utah. The Rockets won the first two games of that series, then lost the next two and eventually the series in seven games. The Rockets, who are without 7-foot-6 center Yao Ming, outscored Utah in the paint 40-26. "They showed how much they wanted to win a ballgame," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "They scored 40 points in the paint. I thought they brought it to us all night long." Williams had 28 points and 12 assists. Carlos Boozer had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Mehmet Okur scored 12 and pulled down 11 boards for the Jazz, whose poor free throw shooting caught up with them in the fourth quarter when McGrady started scoring. The Jazz went 20-for-33 from the foul line, getting 11 more chances than Houston (16-for-22) but failing to capitalize. "Free throws definitely hurt us. You lose a game by two points and you miss 13 free throws, it's definitely frustrating," Williams said. The poor shooting from the line and the resurgence of McGrady were enough to guarantee the Rockets will be playing host to a Game 5 next week. "No one thought we could win in Utah. I don't like the term 'stole' because that implies that we didn't play well," said Houston's Shane Battier, who scored 12. "We finally did a good job of executing our game plan. We took away what we wanted to take away." McGrady tied the game at 86 on a foul shot with 3:29 left, then gave the Rockets the lead with two more from the line with 2:50 remaining. He added a 19-foot jumper with 2:16 to go -- his first fourth-quarter field goal of the series -- then followed with a 20-footer to give the Rockets a 92-86 lead. As he was shooting, Landry was drawing a foul on Andrei Kirilenko away from the ball. The basket counted and Landry made the free throw to convert the unusual three-point play and give Houston a 93-86 lead. But the Jazz weren't done. Kyle Korver hit a 3-pointer, McGrady was called for an offensive foul and Okur hit another 3 to draw the Jazz within 93-92 with 37 seconds left. McGrady missed at the other end and the Jazz had a chance to win, but Landry blocked Williams' shot from the lane and the rebound went to Luis Scola, who was fouled and went 1-for-2 from the line with 0.2 seconds left. After a timeout, the Jazz threw away the inbounds pass. Scola had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ronnie Brewer scored 12 and Matt Harpring added 10 points for the Jazz. LeBron James never played better. It still wasn't enough. James became the youngest player to score 50 points in an NBA game, but his franchise-record 56 weren't enough to prevent the Toronto Raptors from beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 105-98 on Sunday. "I probably played the best game of my life but it means nothing when it comes with a loss," James said. He easily surpassed his previous career best of 43 points, set Nov. 24 against Detroit. However, he committed a key turnover with 16 seconds left and missed a pair of 3-point attempts in the final 14 seconds. James finished 18-for-36 from the field and 14-for-15 from the line. He also had six 3s, 10 rebounds and five assists. But Toronto's bench did in the Cavaliers, outscoring Cleveland's reserves 34-1. "I don't care about individual stats, especially when you lose. I was disappointed to have as good a game as I had and still come out with a loss," James said. At 20 years, 80 days old, James eclipsed Rick Barry as the youngest player to score 50 points. Barry was 21 years, 261 days old when he scored 57 for San Francisco against the New York Knicks, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. "It's a good achievement, but I'd rather set it with a win," James said. James' point total also bested the previous Cavaliers mark of 50 set by Walt Wesley against Cincinnati on Feb. 19, 1971. "He's going to set a lot more records, you know, if he develops," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. "He was just on fire tonight, he was just amazing and it was great to see." After cutting Toronto's lead to three with an off-balance 3-pointer, James paused before running up the floor and clapping his hands. Rafer Alston followed with a layup, giving the Raptors a 103-98 with 23 seconds left. James, with four defenders converging on him, then turned the ball over as he was driving to the basket. Alston followed with two free throws with 14 seconds to go, and James missed two 3-pointers before the final buzzer. James' most spectacular points came on a dunk in the fourth quarter. He crossed over before blowing by Pape Sow and throwing down a thunderous dunk, yelling in the air afterward. James played all 48 minutes. Before the game, he said he felt great and could play another season. His 56 points were the most ever by a Raptors opponent. "I thought he earned all 56," Toronto coach Sam Mitchell said. "I mean, he hit some fadeaway 3s and shots, but he had two guys contesting him." Drew Gooden added 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who have lost nine straight road games and nine of 12 overall. Gooden couldn't believe what he saw. "They were doing all types of defenses against him, but he still kept scoring," Gooden said. "I just looked and thought, who would have thought someone like LeBron James would come out of high school and do this in his second year in the NBA? I looked at the clock, and he had 48 points with like five minutes left." Jalen Rose had 30 points and Donyell Marshall added 24 for the Raptors. Marshall said James reminds him of Michael Jordan. "When I used to play with Golden State, B.J. Armstrong used to tell me about how to beat the Bulls. Let Michael score his points, and stop everybody else," Marshall said. "I think we did that." James scored 29 points in the first two quarters, his most in any half. His previous record for a half was 28 on March 27, 2004, against New Jersey. He finished with 41 in that game. James committed two straight turnovers, the second of which led to Morris Peterson's dunk, giving Toronto a 12-point lead in the first quarter -- its biggest of the game. But James followed with 10 points and two assists in the final 3:37 of the quarter to help cut the lead to three. Game notes Cleveland point guard Jeff McInnis has lost his starting job to Eric Snow. "I don't care. I really don't. What is there to lose?" Silas said. "I don't have time to wait. I have to find guys that can step up." McInnis didn't play at all.
