Reliving the magic of '83
from YouTube Mobile Videos June 24, 2008
6/24/2008 4:50:30 PM Tomorrow (June 25) India will celebrate 25 years of winning its only Cricket World Cup. India seeks to relive the magic of '83. Cricket historian Boria Mujumdar gets a lowdown of the celebration planned at Lords as he chats with MCC manager Claire Skinner. Claire Skinner is coordinating Wednesday's Celebrations here for the MCC. Celebrations are planned 25 years since the Prudential World Cup was won by India. Nowadays, when people watch Test Matches, they will see that the teams are presented trophies out in the field, while the crowd sits in the stands. It was different 25 years ago. The trophy was presented up in the balcony of the Lord's and the teams could lift the trophy and wave to their supporters below. On being questioned whether the whole episode would be re-enacted, Clarine Skinner replied, We will. The players are going to be taken to the dressing rooms and sit where they sat during the game, and they will be brought here onto the first floor balcony and re-presented the trophy. Then they'd be let down, through the steps where every player takes through when every player comes out of Lord's, and then for the dinner, and then onto the grass behind it. Experts from the conversation between Boria Mujumdar and Claire Skinner: Boria: From the perspective of the MCC, how does it feel doing this, you know the significance of this? Skinner: I feel it is wonderful coming back here after 25 years. We know it has been a proud moment for India. And I think it is great that we are celebrating it here. Boria: Talk a bit about the function itself and what's going to happen. You already told me they'll come here and then be taken to the Lord room. Skinner: They will. It is a very sensible occasion. We have over hundred special guests here for the evening including say all of the team and it will be a wonderful celebration. Boria: After this, will the cup be with you or will they take it back? Skinner: It stays here. we have about 45,000 people who come about here every year. Many of them are coming over here from India or have Indian families and are based in the UK. They come here and they see this in the musuem. They get a chance to see this when they come to the Lord's.

Heavy rains head toward cyclone-devastated Myanmar 1 hour, 24 minutes ago YANGON, Myanmar - Heavy rains and another potentially powerful storm headed toward Myanmar's cyclone-devastated delta on Wednesday. The U.N. warned that inadequate relief efforts could lead to a second wave of deaths among the estimated 2 million survivors. ADVERTISEMENT The International Red Cross said in a new estimate that the death toll already may be between 68,833 and 127,990. The Red Cross says it arrived at the number by adding figures gathered in affected areas by other aid groups and organizations and extrapolating the total. The Myanmar junta says Cyclone Nargis left at least 34,273 dead and 27,838 missing. U.N. agencies and other groups have been able to reach only 270,000 people so far. The country's junta told visiting Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, however, that it is in control of the relief operations and doesn't need foreign experts. Samak visited a government relief center in Yangon and told reporters after returning to Bangkok that the junta has given him the "guarantee" that there are no disease outbreaks and no starvation among the cyclone survivors. "They have their own team to cope with the situation," Samak said, citing Myanmar Prime Minister Lt. Gen. Thein Sein. "From what I have seen I am impressed with their management." International agencies say bottlenecks, poor logistics, limited infrastructure and the military government's refusal to allow foreign aid workers have left most of the delta's survivors living in miserable conditions without food or clean water. The government's efforts have been criticized as woefully slow. Rain has been has been pounding the cyclone-hit area all week, and more is expected in the coming days, compounding the already difficult task of moving supplies over ruined roads. It also poses significant health risks to survivors of the May 3 cyclone. "The weather will exacerbate humanitarian conditions for the homeless, many of whom are living under an open sky," said Elizabeth Griffin, a director of Catholic Relief Services from Baltimore. "Thankfully, no serious outbreaks of bacterial, water or mosquito borne diseases have been reported, but this could change in the next two to three weeks." The U.S. military's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said there is a good chance that "a significant tropical cyclone" will form within the next 24 hours and head across the Irrawaddy delta area. But other forecasters were unwilling to make such a prediction. Dr. Thawat Sutharacha of Thailand's Public Health Ministry said Wednesday the junta has given permission to a Thai medical team to go to the cyclone-hit delta. The government separately announced that it will allow 160 relief workers from neighboring countries — India, China, Bangladesh, and Thailand — to come to Myanmar, but it is not clear if they include the Thai medics or whether they will be allowed to travel to the delta. "The government has a responsibility to assist their people in the event of a natural disaster," said Amanda Pitt, a spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for Humanitarian Affairs. "We are here to do what we can and facilitate their efforts and scale up their response. It is clearly inadequate and we do not want to see a second wave of death as a result of that not being scaled up," she said. The news of a possible second cyclone was not broadcast by Myanmar's state-controlled media. But Yangon residents picked up the news on foreign broadcasts and on the Internet. "I prayed to the Lord Buddha, 'please save us from another cyclone. Not just me but all of Myanmar,'" said Min Min, a rickshaw driver, whose house was destroyed in Cyclone Nargis. Min Min, his wife and three children now live on their wrecked premises under plastic sheets. Soldiers have barred foreign aid workers from reaching cyclone survivors in the hardest-hit areas, but gave access to an International Red Cross representative who returned to Yangon on Tuesday. DBICKFORD TRUTHTV FOOD SHORTAGES! WAKE UP BRAINDEAD AMERICA

WAKE UP AMERICA! QUIT WATCHING YOUR LYING TELEVISIONS! FOOD SHORTAGES ARE COMING TO THIS COUNTRY! Witnesses: Soldiers kill 2 in Somalia riot over food prices By MOHAMED OLAD HASSAN, Associated Press Writer 18 minutes ago MOGADISHU, Somalia - Troops opened fire and killed at least two people as tens of thousands of people rioted over high food prices in Somalia's capital Monday. ADVERTISEMENT Several people also were injured in the protest in Mogadishu in this Horn of Africa nation. Prices of rice and other food staples have been rising rapidly around the world, boosted by poor weather in some nations and rising demand. In Africa, prices of some staple foods have increased more than 50 percent in a matter of weeks. The Somali protesters include women and children, who marched to protest the refusal of traders to accept old 1,000-shilling notes, blaming that for the skyrocketing food prices. Soon after, tens of thousands of people took to the streets, hurling stones that smashed the windshields of several cars and buses. Rocks also were thrown at shops and chaos erupted at the capital's main Bakara market. Hundreds of shops and restaurants in southern Mogadishu closed their doors for fear of looting. Dr. Dahir Dhere said a man wounded in the protests died on the way to an operating room at the capital's main Medina Hospital. Protester Abdinur Farah says he was marching with his uncle in southern Mogadishu when government troops opened fire and wounded his relative. He said his uncle died before they could take him to the hospital. In Mogadishu, the price of 2.2 pounds of corn meal has gone from 12 cents in January to 25 cents. Another staple, rice, has gone up in that time from $26 to $47.50 for a 110-pound sack. Protests also have been held in three other African countries, including Senegal, whose president on Sunday called for the United Nations to dismantle its Food and Agriculture Organization, calling it an ineffective money-eater that failed to help avert the global food crisis. Senegal's leader, President Abdoulaye Wade, said he had long called for the Rome-based organization to be transferred to Africa, "near the 'sick ones' it pretends to care for." But, "This time, I'm going further: It must be eliminated," he said in a statement. Wade suggested its assets be transferred to the U.N. International Fund for Agricultural Development, which he said was more efficient, and that that agency set up headquarters in Africa "at the heart of the problem." FAO officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Wade's government responded to protest marches by securing a deal with India that ensures Senegal's needs of 600,000 tons of rice a year are met for the next six years. In Burkina Faso, the government eliminated duties and taxes on rice, salt, milk and all products used to prepare food for children.
