La Ka Mate è uno degli stili, forse il più celebre, della Haka, la danza tipica della popolazione Maori, nativa della Nuova Zelanda, composta attorno al 1820 dal capo della tribù degli Ngati Toa, chiamato Te Rauparaha. Te Rauparaha compose il Ka Mate per celebrare la forza della vita sulla morte dopo essersi salvato fortunosamente dalle tribù nemiche Ngati Maniapoto e Waikato. Nella versione usata dalla squadra, alla fine della danza è stato aggiunto un salto in alto per rendere il ballo più scenografico ed intimidatorio, che però non è tipico della Ka Mate bensì di un'altra varietà di Haka, la Peruperu.

Alors qu'ils approchaient de la cachette, Te Rauparaha aurait murmuré Ka mate ! Ka mate ! (je meurs, je meurs). Te Rangikoaea affirma aux poursuivants que Te Rauparaha était parti. Ce dernier murmura alors Ka ora, ka ora (je vis, je vis). Les guerriers se laissèrent convaincre et partirent. D'où les dernières strophes, qui remercient l'homme chevelu, Te Wharerangi (et sa femme ?!! Elle est un peu oubliée...) et décrivent sa sortie du puits et le fait qu'il voit à nouveau la lumière. En définitive, c'est un chant dont les paroles sont tout sauf violentes, comparées à d'autres hakas du Pacifique Sud (Tonga et Fidji notamment) qui sont beaucoup plus sanglants. L'effet saisissant vient en fait surtout de la virilité et de la hargne des All Blacks. Le défi physique imposé traditionnelement par les néo-zélandais commence avant le début du match, en somme !
