from On Digital Media June 22, 2008
In this episode, John Federico (twitter: @gadgetboy) and Steve Hatch (twitter: @shatch) welcome Chia-Lin Simmons (twitter: @zeropts) back to ODM. Welcome Alexandra Claire Becker! Events: John s going to the NY Tech Meetup on July 1st Google and Yahoo enter into a search advertising agreement Executive Exodus at Yahoo: Qi Lu, EVP engineering for Search and Advertising Technology Group; Vish Makhijani, SVP and General Manager of Search and; Brad Garlinghouse, VP of Communications s List while Joshua Schacter, founder of del.icio.us, has also decided to leave. Yahoo announced a deal to sell display ads .on Walmart.com(?) Chia-Lin thinks it s the digital equivalent of shelving fees. According to the data, YouTube is still kicking Hulu s ass, regardless of what Mark Cuban thinks. Regardless, we want to know how Youtube and Hulu are going to monetize their respective businesses. Would Hulu consider a paid subscription model? YouTube is going to start allowing long-form content (videos above 30 minutes). Scoble thinks they want to insert advertising in the longer stuff. We agree. Gary Vaynerchuk s Wine Library TV moves over to Revision3. Verizon will be pushing its FiOS service to 50 mbps downstream, 20 mbps upstream. For $139.95 a month! Gene Simmons (yes, that Gene Simmons) thinks that Radiohead, the internets, p2p - and the FANS - are killing the recording industry. EMI is not only suing MP3Tunes.com, but its founder, Michael Robertson, personally. Microsoft has decided to support MSN Music customers (and the related DRM) until - at least - the end of 2011. They ll revisit their decision at that time. Audible files will soon play on the Zune. Our music is Democracy from Alexander Blu. Welcome to Classic ScobleShow
from Classic ScobleShow March 25, 2008
It started with an innocuous audio interview with the then-President of the Products and Technology Group at SAP AG, Shai Agassi. Then came Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz, sitting at a table with an umbrella. It wasn t long before Scoble introduced us to Thomas Hawk (investment advisor by day, ubiquitous digital media creator by night). There was the Golden Gate Bridge walk (spread over three parts!), and then came pumpkins lots of pumpkins. Somewhere between the Golden Gate Bridge and the pumpkin patch, conversations with entrepreneurs like b5media Founder and President Jeremy Wright and SmugMug CEO Don MacAskill. There was lunch with Bill Gates and another lunch with Mark Cuban. We met folks from Salesforce and Zillow, SocialText, Retrevo and Maxthon. We met political bloggers and a presidential candidate on the campaign trail. But one of our favorites? It s an interview with Microsoft s Gary Flake on Photosynth. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Robert Scoble is still the author of the incredibly popular tech geek blog, Scobleizer.com. He s also the managing director over at FastCompany.tv, where ScobleShow editor and producer Rocky Barbanica is also now a senior producer. Since that fateful first ScobleShow, Agassi has moved on to found Project Better Place, in order to pursue interests in alternative energy and climate change. Jonathan Schwartz is still at Sun, still blogging, and lots of the start-ups we met are still kicking around, some of them very successfully! It s worth taking a few minutes to surf through the archives, or just wait to see what pops up in the Classic feed. Good for a few goofy laughs and a little insight into where we ve been and where we might be going. Oh, and Thomas Hawk is still evangelizing for photo sharing and digital media, and still believes that the best pictures in the world have yet to be taken. Buzz Out Loud 681: Pi Not Pie
from Buzz Out Loud from CNET March 14, 2008
Today is 3/14, also known as Pi day, and all we can think about is celebrating by eating large amounts of apple pie. Verizon seems to be warming up to P2P technology, and the music industry is proposing a monthly fee for ISPs to offset the cost of piracy. Do you think the RIAA deserves a slice?

Buzz Out Loud 610: Stop killing the universe
from Buzz Out Loud from CNET November 26, 2007
We got into a series of debates on today's show about eBooks, DRM, the reliability of the 700 MHz spectrum, and most interestingly, how observing dark matter might shorten the life span of the universe. Of course, we also talked about unlocked iPhones in Germany, too. So it wasn't all cosmology.

Buzz Out Loud 550: So long, time
from Buzz Out Loud from CNET August 30, 2007
That's right. AT&T has finally pulled the ultimate fast one on us and killed time itself. OK, calm down. Its discontinuing the "call for time" service that's still only available in Nevada and California. Other things to calm down about? A possible iCar, cell phones and cancer, municipal Wi-Fi, and Viacom copyright insanity. Actually, get fired up about that last one. We are.

On Digital Media, Episode #35
from On Digital Media May 17, 2007
It s our first fivesome! John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons, Ken Gellman, Steve Hatch and guest panelist John Havens review the top digital media stories of the week. (Our audio quality is not up to our usual standards in this episode. Ken called-in via Gizmo Project and John is still learning how to deal with balancing remote callers with in-studio panelists. Please pardon the faux pas.) Thanks to Seth Godin, Hugh McLeod and Stormhoek for the Pinotage tonight. Amazon is going to launch a DRM-free music store. Chia-Lin thinks that industry should get together and formulate a ubiquitous standard for DRM. Really!? Steve thinks that s a monumental task. John F. agrees. John H. thinks that DRM helps artists get paid. John F. thinks that some file sharing is good - as promotion. Audible Magic and The Harry Fox Agency to launch a service that will track piracy in UGC. John H. thinks that this service could be a great way to measure passalong listening for podcasts. Ryan Block from Engadget posted a story that caused Apple s stock to drop a couple of points - the story was ultimately proven false. A strike of members of the guilds in hollywood and television could put studios and other distributors at a disadvantage given the ease at which the internet enables production and distribution of content John H. shares his perspective on being paid for your craft - whether it be acting, writing - or podcasting. Why are people willing to pay 99 cents for a song, but not an informational podcast. Like ODM for instance. Steve and John F. don t believe in creating friction, particularly when advertising can fund content and reduce friction Comcast is going to start selling movies on-demand while they re in the theaters and charge $30 - $60 premium for the privelege. And Mark Cuban thinks the theaters have to get a cut. (If you count the babysitter, we parents already pay that much for a movie ) ABC is going to be putting Lost and Desperate Housewives on the web and distributing them in HD. 24/7 Real Media is bought by WPP. Conflict of interest? Yeah. DiscRevolt allows bands to sell custom gift cards for their music. Chia-Lin thinks all gift cards are evil. Our closing music is Democracy from Alexander Blu.
