Barry Manilow

The casual setting of this song was purposefully created by Ken Ehrlick, who was the creator and producer of Soundstage. Ken liked to have one unusual, signature treatment of a song in each of his shows, and this song was it. This song was selected due to the "hook" of the title and premise of the song being about the life of a studio musician, hence, the casual clothes, glasses and rehearsal studio setting. This song was performed midway through Barry's show and the song prior to this was Barry doing a medley of the commercial jingles that he had written, or performed or arranged. Up to this point, the stage setting was that of a full stage production with appropriate costuming and everyone in their place. As seen here, at the end of Barry's medley of commercial jingles, which ended with the McDonald's jingle, "You deserve a break today", the scene cuts to the group just finishing the medley at rehearsal in the casual setting you see for this song. Barry tells everyone to take a break and he begins to noodle on the piano with this song. As he works on this song, the other performers get caught up in it and slowly join in. This is how Ken Ehrlick intended the song to be staged for broadcast. Ken eventually moved on to Hollywood where he is one of the industry's most accomplished and sought after producers of specials, concerts and notable live events. In addition, he has produced many of the Emmy and Grammy awards shows. This video is a marriage of two clips from different sources. The first half of the song is a clip from the original broadcast of the show and the second half is from a better quality, much later, Soundstage special that showed partial clips from the old shows.
