The Babbage Difference Engine
from Channel 10 May 23, 2008
Back in the early 1800’s an English chap by the name of Charles Babbage started toying with the idea of machines that could calculate complex mathematical tables to eliminate the possibility of human error when performing these calculations by hand. Babbage drew up plans for such a device – the Difference Engine - but never got around to actually building one. In 1991 the London Science Museum completed a replica of Babbage’s Difference Engine to celebrate the 200 year anniversary of his birth. In 2000 they also built the printer (yes a printer) he designed to complete the project. Tim Robinson from the Computer History Museum in Mountain View California built his own, fully functional, version of the Babbage Difference Engine out of Meccano which he had on display at Maker Faire this year to help promote the museum's Babbage Engine Exhibit which is open now.

Revisiting :: Swap-O-Rama-Rama: Don’t Commodify, Modify!
from Ryan Is Hungry February 23, 2008
QuickTime | Flash | iPod | Ogg Share by: vPIP Embed (copy re officially bi-coastal now!), we re dispersing most of our possessions back into the world via Craigslist, Freecycle and Etsy. Yep, we re moving again. We still love the SF Bay area and the San Mateo Eco-Village very much, but we re feeling the need to start building something of our own. Jay s dad has land in Virginia that is the perfect spot to put to use what we ve learned this past year about gardening and sustainable building (thanks to all of you and this here blog!). What a perfect time to re-visit the Swap-O-Rama-Rama video! More to come about the move You might recognize Wendy Tremayne from our Green Acre Series here on RyanIsHungry. Wendy founded Swap-O-Rama-Rama as a way to break out the consumer cycle of shopping for clothes. Utilizing the abundance that just a few people s closets can bare, adding a little creativity with fancy sewing machines and silkscreen artists for custom modifications, Swap-O-Rama-Rama makes recycling clothes fun and social. This particular swap was part of Maker Faire, an event to celebrate makers of all kinds from robot artists to crafters to computer hackers. As Wendy says here: There is no creativity in consumerism makers don t make good consumers. The less you know, the less you can make, the more you re going to buy. Want to produce a Swap-O-Rama-Rama where you live? You can! Because it s Creative Commons licensed! Contact Wendy through the site and she ll get you started! reNormalization
from Vimeo / mmeiser's subscription videos November 27, 2007
Paragliding in Norma ....it shows up how most of the italian villages look like. Mountains ridge (to protect themselves in the long and dark middle age). A main castle, also because Pirats from the sea liked to make escursion deep in the shore to go shopping for nice girls food and other goods. And of course churches with the massive bell tower. The bell was used to advise the people involved in the field works that a treat (armed men) was appearing at the horizont. Most of the incursion was made by the near by villages or city, and there was a never ending conflict for stolen animals, raped females, or any other offense they can exchange. It was the hard competition for the survival. by Vidimart Cast: Marcin Kostur
