Episode 0 :: Sorta Meta
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) March 01, 2008
This is our very first video production, and it took much longer than we wanted to get it posted...Episode 0 is "Sorta Meta" because while it is a show on its own, we wanted to give our viewers an initial taste of what we're thinking as far as content and format. Not to say that we haven't already made some changes for Episode 1, but, well, you'll get the basic idea.This episode was taped with a single Sony DV camera using only the camera microphone, and nothing more than ambient lighting. Yes, we need to get some equipment. We are fueled by optimism and generosity at the moment... Our personal favorites from this first episode include the Rimba review and the commentary on Arrogant Bastard Ale.Watch and enjoy!

Podcamp Boston, 2007
from Vimeo / justin's videos November 07, 2007
Erik and I had the chance to go to Podcamp Boston to represent Next New Networks a couple weekends ago, and it was really fun. I had a little camera with me some of the time, and plugged this together the meager amount of footage I shot! Sorry the frame rate is so low, the cam has a lot of issues with Macs. :( Cast: justin, Erik Beck

Tesla Coil Rock
from andycarvin's show March 10, 2007
When I was a kid, I loved two things unconditionally - the Red Sox and tesla coils. The Boston Museum had the biggest tesla coil in the world - I wanted one for Hanukkah. So you can imagine how giddy I was when I stumbled upon a pair of tesla coils at the geek fest organized at SXSW by Make: Magazine and Dorkbot. Unless most tesla coils, which just shoot out lightning, these coils are tuned to shoot lightning at different frequencies, generating music. In this video, Joe DiPrima demonstrates his mad, mad invention as it performs the 1812 Overture.

Make Podcast: Weekend Projects - Intro To Robotics
from blip.tv (beta) September 15, 2006
When I saw the scribbler robot article in Make: 07, I had to make one.? At first I thought it would be easy to get some steppers and boss them around with some software.? Well that's what needed to be done, but it wasn't easy.? Luckily I got a lot of the hardware issues out of the way by finding a medical robot that organized vials of blood off ebay to convert into my robot.

Make Podcast: Weekend Projects - Make a Rodent Powered Nightlight
from blip.tv (beta) July 21, 2006
The Weekend Projects Podcast continues with the Rodent Powered Nightlight! This project can be found in the print or digital version of Make: 06, or you can download the PDF for the pages - Link. The article in the magazine was inspired by the folks over at otherpower.com who came up with a hamster powered generator. To begin, you need a rodent wheel. I chose the mouse wheel, because when I visited the pet store, the mice were running on the wheel while all the other rodents were busy sleeping.Then you need to affix magnets to the side of it. After significant trial and error, I used a shower drain that turned out to be the perfect size and affixed them with superglue. This is trickier than it seems because the magnets are powerful. Be careful because these magnets can pinch your fingers. I used 1/2 Neodymium magnets from Amazing Magnets. but in retrospect, the 3/4 magnets recommended in the article might provide more power. Once the magnets were on the drain-plate, I attached the drain-plate to the side of the wheel with more superglue and zipties. I used sewing bobbins to wind my coils and they worked great. Once you get a coil all wound up, give it a coat of superglue to make it behave. I made 6 coils and went through three containers of superglue and two rolls of 30 gauge magnet wire on this project, so make sure to stock up! I re-used the wire being used as a base as the axle, and used a hot-glue gun to hold the coils in place. I used a bit of 2x4 left over from the workbench I made two weekends ago. Now that I'm done with it, I want to add a bicycle computer to see how far Annika runs in a day and track her progress. I'm also planning on adding some ball bearings to make the wheel quieter. I tried adding some silicon dust lube, but it didn't help. I'd also like to learn how to make a mouse-cam and give these mice a home on the web!

Survival Research Labs Walkthrough
from I Make Things June 22, 2006
While in San Francisco, I was invited to videotape a walkthrough of the Survival Reasearch Labs. SRL has been making machines and performing with them around the world since 1978.Violet Blue was my kind and enthusiastic host and she showed me the workshop, machines and materials that are packed into this industrial building. There is a spirit of ingenuity in this place that is palpable. The possibilities, potential, tools, and materials are crammed into the warehouse space. The raw creative potential to make anything at all made me giddy. When a workshop has been used and built up continuously for 25 years, it has a life of it's own. Because all the machines were crammed into corners and stacked up and under tarps, you've really got to look at their website to see what the machines look like. When we finished video-taping, Violet told me that they are being evicted from their workshop space. I'm thankful I had the opportunity to see it and make this video to share before it moves to a new location. They have a performance coming up on August 11th in San Jose.
