Striking Machinists Want More Job Security

The Boeing Machinists' strike is well into its 2nd week. So far, no new talks are scheduled, although company officials say they hope to be back at the bargaining table in the next 2 weeks. The two sides have failed to reach agreement on a host of issues, including wages and benefits. But the biggest sticking point may be the issues of outsourcing and job security. KUOW's Deborah Wang reports.

Machinists Strike Costs Adding Up

One of Boeing's biggest 737 customers is feeling the pinch from the Machinists strike. Ireland based Ryanair says it's postponing the launch of 11 new routes from Edinburgh, Scotland. That's because the strike has delayed the delivery of two new planes. The strike is now entering its fifth day. KUOW's Deborah Wang looks at the costs to both sides.

Implications from the Boeing Machinist Strike

Boeing largest union, the Machinists Union, is on day three of its strike, but it's day one in terms of the full work week. During the strike, the aerospace giant has said that it does not intend to start building new airplanes. Analysts estimate Boeing stands to lose more than a million dollars a day. To explore what this means for the aerospace industry, and the region's economy, KUOW's Derek Wang spoke with aerospace analyst Scott Hamilton and economist Donna Thompson.
