The dairy of Kraste Misirkov, who is considered the father of the contemporary Macedonian nation, was presented in Skopie on Tuesday and revealed that he saw himself as a "Macedonian Bulgarian". The issue of Misirkov's diary is a joint project of the State Archive of the Republic of Macedonia , and Bulgaria 's State Archives Agency. It includes the period between July 5th and August 30th in 1913, when Misirkov resided in Odessa (today in the Ukraine ). The 381-page diary was found in a Bulgarian antique shop in 2006, and its authenticity has been verified by Bulgarian and Macedonian experts. It is written in Russian, and presents the author in a way contrary to the ideology that he promoted during certain periods of his life. The diary reveals Misirkov saw himself as a Bulgarian, thus disproving the claims of Macedonian historians about his Macedonian identity. In his review of the edition, the Macedonian Professor Vlado Popovski interprets the writings in Misirkov's diary in 1913, right after the Second Balkan War, as follows: "Misirkov presents Bulgaria as a martyr who bore the burnt of the war against the Ottoman Empire... he includes not only Thrace but Macedonia as well in the Bulgarian national unification projects, justifies the Bulgarian claims in Macedonia, and calls the Macedonians "Macedonian Bulgarians"... Misirkov recommends that Bulgaria work the autonomy of Macedonia as a prerequisite towards unifying with it." Popovski points out, however, that the pro-Bulgarian orientation was useful for Macedonia because the European powers would not support its independence. The Macedonian newspaper Utrinski Vesnik quotes another Professor, Gane Todorovski, as saying that Misirkov's "oxymoronic self-declaration as a Macedonian Bulgarian ... is just a complementary and administrative inert legitimating". Yet, Todorovski salutes the issue of Misirkov's diary as a triumph in the bilateral relations, and stresses that many of the most important documents about Macedonia 's history were in the Bulgarian archives. Kraste Misirkov was born in 1874 in Pella , presently in the Greek part of Macedonia , and died in Sofia in 1926. His ethnicity has been disputed by Macedonian historians because at different points in his life he declared himself either Bulgarian, or Macedonian. Misirkov's most important work is the brochure "On Macedonian Matters", which appeared in 1903. He was a respected public figure and journalist in early 20th-century Bulgaria , and when he died, he was still the Director of a high school in the Bulgarian city of Gabrovo , with the Bulgarian government paying for his funeral. Misirkov's oscillations between his Bulgarian and Macedonian identities has fueled-long-lasting disputes about his actual identity. Some authors claim his attitude was explained by the fact that he was an agent of the Bulgarian intelligence, which had tried to inculcate him into the Serbian and Russian secret services. Macedonian Movie from 1967 While in Europe, during the second half of the 19th century bourgeois revolutions take place, Macedonia is still a part of the confirmed feudal empire of Turkey. Macedonian people are exposed to the violence of the Turk's feudal landowners. Anarchy and confusion reign everywhere in the empire and the result of this is the terrorizing of the unprotected population. On the estate of one of the many Bays in Macedonia, a lot of "his" peasants work for him, for Osman Bay. It is harvest time. The Bay pursues a Turk, who because of his progressive ideas has to be punished. The ethnic Macedonian shepherd Spas helps him to escape. The hunt for the escaped Turk leads the Turkish soldiers to the harvesters. The ethnic Macedonian peasant girl Cveta is also among them. Her beauty cannot help but be noticed by the Bay. Osman Bay kidnaps the girl. He brings her into his caravan among the other women of his harem. The promise of easy life as one of his wives is not enough to persuade Cveta to change her religion and give up her relatives. Her peasant fellows, lead by the priest and the shepherd Spase, as well as by her beloved look for her release. The film adaptation of the play "Macedonian Bloody Wedding" which the first play was written in authentic Macedonian language by Voidan Chernodrinski, is one of the most successful projects of "Vardar Film" production of its kind. 07.01.2008 The Macedonian Orthodox Christmas celebration begins the evening of January 5th, which is known as "Kolede". Children go from door to door singing Christmas carols, heralding the birth of Jesus, and receiving fruits, nuts and candy from the people. Later in the evening, the elderly people from the neighborhood gather around a bonfire outside, and engage in a conversation about the past year and the year to come. The following evening is the Christmas Eve, when a traditional oak log (badnik) is brought to the home. This log is cut by the father of the household and his older son, while the table is being set for the Christmas Eve supper (Posna Vechera). The dinner cannot have anything derived from animals, and it cannot be cooked using cooking oil or other types of fat. The traditional dinner usually consists of baked fish. The dinner is the last day of a traditional 40-day Orthodox Lent, which is done in a way to honor the Virgin Mary for carrying baby Jesus. The oak log is cut into three pieces, representing the Holy Trinity, and each piece is brought into the house by the father. A member of the family receives a piece and places it on the fire. As this is done, the son and the father exchange a greeting: "Good evening and happy Christmas Eve" (Dobra Vecher i Vesel Badnik). While the log is being placed on the fire, the mother and the grandmother gather the children together into the room where the dinner is to be served. Each person carries a bundle of straw from outside, and together with the mother they spread the straw on the floor. The spreading of the straw on the house floor is meant to make the atmosphere more like that when the night Jesus was born. The house is decorated further decoratesd with oak and pine branches, representing the wish of the family for long and healthy life, "with health strong as oak, and with a life long as that of the oak."
