A new exhibit at the New York Public Library, "Eminent Domain," looks at the use of eminent domain in NYC, and the changing nature of public vs. private space. Stephen Pinson is curator; photographers Thomas Holton and Bettina Johae have work in the show. It’s on view through August 29, 2008 at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street.

Past and Present Collide in El Paso (The Leonard Lopate Show: Monday, 14 July 2008)

El Paso is home to the largest bronze equestrian statue in the world – of Spanish Conquistador Juan de Oñate. A new documentary, “The Last Conquistador,” recounts how the area’s Native Americans opposed the statue because of Oñate's 1598 foray into New Mexico that led to the deaths of two out of every three Native Americans there. Christina Ibarra co-directed and co-produced the film, which premieres July 15 on PBS.

The world is a very different place today than it was when the Peace Corps was founded in 1961 by President Kennedy. As it nears its 50th anniversary, former volunteers are looking at what the program has accomplished, and where it should go in the future. Kevin Quigley (Thailand 1976-9) is the president of the National Peace Corps Association, Rajeev Goyal (Nepal 2001-3) is the director of the More Peace Corps campaign, and Judith McGuire was a volunteer in Nigeria from 1965-67. Marty Tankleff: 17 Years of Wrongful Imprisonment (The Leonard Lopate Show: Friday, 11 July 2008)

In December 2007, Marty Tankleff was released from prison, where he had been locked up for 17 years for the 1988 Long Island murder of his parents, Arlene and Seymour Tankleff. The state attorney general’s office recently announced that it would not retry Tankleff for the murder. Now he’s studying at Hofstra to become a defense attorney. He joins us along with us lawyer, Bruce Barket, to talk about surviving so many years of wrongful imprisonment, how he’s adapting to post-prison life, and whether he and his legal team plan to seek justice from Suffolk County's law enforcement agencies -- or from the men they believe committed the crimes, Seymour Tankleff's former business associates.
