Video: Eye on Health - Cleaning Changes

When you check into any hospital, you trust your room is clean. But at Trinity Health, it is now cleaner than ever before. Perry Olson shows us why in this week's Eye on Health. Could this new microfiber mop really make a big difference at Trinity Hospital? Well...yes... (Amy Moen - Trinity Foundation Director) "One of the things we have found is that the majority of our injuries are employee lifts." And with old mops lifting heavy buckets was a problem for some housekeeping employees...but they are now a tool of the past microfiber is in...it is easier to use has a longer life and most important...cleaner. Water goes on the floor...and back to the new mop not a bucket. (Leona Lochthowe - Trinity Housekeeping Supervisor) "This way we are using what we are using. We are not dumping back into the sewer system and then the mop picks it up and carries it away." It is better for the patient because the rooms are cleaner. More time can be spent actually cleaning because prep time has decreased... (Leona Lochthowe - Trinity Housekeeping Supervisor) "We were changing the water out every three rooms. So that mop stayed with us all day long. With the microfiber we are changing each room so we have a clean mop everytime we come into a room." It is certainly a simple change...but one that was needed....and appreciated... (Amy Moen - Trinity Foundation Director) "Our housekeeping staff are working behind the scenes and don't get many pats on the back. Finally they got a piece of equipment that is making a difference and we think they are happier and aren't working as hard as they have been." The Trinity Foundation helped secure funding to help pay for the 34 thousand dollar switch this year. With your Eye on Health, Perry Olson, KX News.

Video: Use caution when heating home

Belen has had two house fires in just as many days. The valencia county fire chief says it's part of a winter trend. The number of house fires go up -- as the temperature goes down. Belen families were startled out of bed -- when a fire broke out late last night at yucca r-v and self storage in valencia county. We had to run down the driveway, perpendicular to the fire and the flames. It was really hot. He was one of several people who evacuated -- as a fire tore through the storage building, an r-v and seven fifth wheel trailers. "it was intense enough to where it actually shattered the windows on their home." Then, only 12 hours later -- another house fire in belen. This time, at a double-wide mobile home ... With several dogs inside. It's a scary thing to pass by and see your neighbor's house burning. There were four heilars in there, and we got them out. There was one dog left inside that we couldn't get to. In both fires, no people were hurt. Firefighters say it's still unclear what caused the fires --- but this is another reminder to be extra careful this winter. This time of the year, we do have a lot of structure fires, especially when it starts to get cold. People are looking at alternative ways to heat their homes: wood stoves, fire places. Sometimes they don't install them properly, and sometimes they don't do the proper maintenance on them. Valencia county's fire chief says fire places, wood stoves, space heaters and overloading electrical appliances on outlets ... Can all put your family at risk. If you're in valencia county --and you're wondering whether you are heating your home safely -- just give the valencia fire department a call ... And someone will go check out your home for you.
