Beth Givens - Privacy: Is it Time for A Revolution?
from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) July 15, 2008
Protecting reader privacy and confidentiality has long been an integral part of the mission of ALA and its members. Should it continue to be a priority? In an age when people increasingly use social networking to expose intimate life details, does privacy still matter to information seekers? Does anyone care if their library records and online searches are being tracked? If they don't, why should they? Privacy Rights Clearinghouse director Beth Givens discusses the importance of privacy and what's at stake if the persistent erosion of privacy continues unchecked. Part of a panel presented by the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom at the 2008 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA.

Mi Vida/Mi Pueblo Greenfield Library Art
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 03, 2008
Mi Vida/Mi Pueblo's exhibit of art from rural Greenfield came home from its tour to San Francisco's Mission Cultural Center and Salinas' National Steinbeck Center. Now the project has set its sights on creating a permanent arts center in Greenfield. Two years ago, Martin Macareno of Poder Popular and Kira Carrillo Corser of the Community Foundation for Monterey County's Communities Supporting the Arts put together an arts program in to serve agricultural community of Greenfield in South Monterey County. Martin has since been killed, but the Community Foundation and Poder Popular has expanded the project with the support of the Arts Council for Monterey County, First Night Monterey, and the Monterey Free Libraries. South Monterey County Supervisor Simon Salinas reminds us how important art is in combating violence. Curator/artist, Kira Corser, celebrates with the project's partners. The program also features commentary by Greenfield's Director of Development Paul Mugan; Monterey County Librarian, Jayanti Addleman; Ted Rico, Evelyn Vargas, and Carlos Vega of Poder Popular; Ellen Martin of First Night Monterey. Lincoln Hatch, Maia Carroll, and Paulette Lynch of Arts Council for Monterey County express their the support for the project which hopes to bring Greenfield a permanent art center. Music by Rondilla Armon a of the Alisal Center for the Fine Arts in East Salinas. Video by Michael Houston and Fernando Edeza. Picture America.org provided production service.

How to use Web 2.0 technologies in you library instructions . Dorine Kieft-Wondergem EAHIL2008
from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) July 01, 2008
Web 2.0 technologies, like del.iciou.us, Podcasting, Netvibes, Second Life,LibraryThing, Screencasting have almost unlimited possibilities. But how can you usethese in library instructions? In this paper I will focus on personal start page tools like Netvibes (look-alikes areiGoogle, Pageflakes, MyYahoo). With this tool you can make your own free personalstart page. It allows you to put all your web resources into one page, including blogs, news, email, podcasts, pictures, videocasts, rss-feeds. You can also share the contentof a Netvibes-page with others. This makes it possible to develope pages for specificdepartments but also to use it in instructions. In the presentation I will demonstrateNetvibes: What is it, how do libraries use Netvibes, do they use it at all? How can weuse Netvibes in our library classes?

Apps in Facebook & OpenSocial: Why librarians should pay attention
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 25, 2008
In May 2007, Facebook opened up their development platform to create apps within Facebook itself. Later that year, Google released OpenSocial with the intent to allow developers to create apps that would work across multiple social websites. This presentation looks at what both platforms offer (or don't), some of the issues with being more open, and why libraries should investigate developing apps in OpenSocial in addition to Facebook

from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) May 25, 2008
i've been thinking about libraries that don't use IM, that don't use the most common communication tools, and that don't even have useful web sites...and decided to create a way to express that - this brief video. Every library should have the appropriate funding and educated staff to carry out various 2.0 methods of providing information...they way many people expect. libraries: get with the program! www.curtisrogers.info
