It's a volatile mix, politics, party leadership and climate change, but they're the ingredients the Coalition is wrestling with as it searches for a crisp and coherent policy on an emissions trading scheme. It's an issue which has become a dogfight for the Coalition.
An Evangelical Manifesto - Guinness & Smith on SBEAn Evangelical Manifesto - Guinness & Smith on SBE
from Steve Brown Etc.
July 11, 2008

Join us on this edition of Steve Brown Etc. as we discuss An Evangelical Manifesto with one of its primary authors, Os Guinness, and one of its more vocal critics, Warren Smith. Use one of the options below to listen. The culture wars have created a lot of confusion and consternation around the term Evangelical. So, a group of Christian leaders have come together to clear things up with An Evangelical Manifesto. Os Guinness and the other authors of the manifesto hope to, make clear that we are followers of Jesus Christ and [are] therefore to be defined theologically and not politically or culturally. Sounds simple enough, doesn t it? Well, it s not. Some say it s a ploy on the part of the religious left to undermine the religious right. Others say the list of leaders who drafted and signed the manifesto is conspicuously bereft of the most strident right-wing Christian leaders. Enter Steve Brown Etc. to bring the two sides together to kiss and make nice, nice. Don t miss it.

Filed under: Animation, New Releases, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Scripts, Newsstand, Politics A couple of people have been griping about Wall-E director Andrew Stanton's refusal to admit that his cute little movie about a robot in love actually contains some pretty upfront green politics, but there's a far more polarizing reference in the film than its harmless pro-environment agenda. It's no major plot spoiler to reveal that, about an hour or so into the story, Fred Willard appears in a recorded message as the mysterious president of Earth's corporate government and orders the ship's captain (Jeff Garlin) to "stay the course." Wait, we've heard this one before: It was the go-to statement used by the Bush administration for about three years or so when describing its modus operandi in Iraq (the term was abandoned when staying the course started to sound like a bad idea). In Wall-E, the context is quite different -- it's an order to not do something, rather than take action -- but hard to ignore nonetheless. Certain critics with (surprise!) conservative slants have taken issue with this. At Dirty Harry's Place, John Nolte expresses his disappointment in the first paragraph of his review: "Have we lost the wonderful studio who brought us The Incredibles and Ratatouille to Bush Derangement Syndrome?" he asks. New York Post critic Kyle Smith picked up the rant and decided to write his own, even though he hadn't seen the film yet: "This kind of crack, lame as it is, also breaks the spell of the movie by hurling you out of the theater and back into reality."Continue reading Discuss: Do Politics Belong in Kids Movies? Diamond contends that although more than half of all countries are now democracies, recent efforts to promote democracy around the world have faltered. These stumbles have constituted, Diamond maintains, a very serious threat to freedom. In a bold vision for the future, Diamond explains that the desire for democracy runs deep, even in very poor countries, and proposes that entrenched regimes like Iran and China could become democracies within a generation - The Commonwealth Club of California Larry Diamond is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a professor by courtesy of political science and sociology at Stanford University. He is also co-editor of the Journal of Democracy and co-director of the International Forum for Democratic Studies of the National Endowment for Democracy. He has written and edited numerous articles and books on democracy in developing countries and the problems of development and corruption, particularly in Africa and Asia. from RN Breakfast-individual stories
May 28, 2008

Bitter factional warfare has long divided the NSW Liberal Party. There have been fears in recent years that the party would make itself unelectable with the takeover of key party positions and many branches by conservative Christian and right wing factional groups. Yesterday, in what may be a bad omen for mooted reforms of the Liberal Party nationally, three senior party officials in NSW resigned unexpectedly in protest at the railroading of reforms that would have ended branch stacking and reduced the power of the factions. -

The second big test comes next month, on June 28, with a by-election for the Victorian seat of Gippsland. From: Commitment or Holocaust by Prof. Dr. Ing. Libor Brom We ask ourselves who has caused the protracted holocaust in the world. Could it be that for evil to win only one thing is necessary good people who do nothing? Or that the hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, at the time of moral crisis, retain their neutrality? True, there are people in our world who have lost their moral perspective. Human knowledge has become vast and unmanageable. Astronomy has revealed a world beyond the imagination of man, physics a universe in the atom, biology a microcosm in every cell, physiology mysteries in every organ, and psychology dark secrets in every dream. Theology has crumbled, technology has exploded, economics has shattered, and politics has inflamed the world. The scientific specialist knows more and more about less and less, the philosophic generalist knows less and less about more and more, and both have put their blinders on to shut out any moral decision. The door is opened wide for a lasting holocaust. Knowledge has to be man's prime instrument for action and survival. Introductions that enumerate the institutions of learning where I have earned my degrees amuse me. They miss the most important school and the most influential teachers I have ever had my home and my parents. They were simple, hard-working people who had little time and very few luxuries to give. They did give me, however, their personal example and a firm springboard from which to jump into the world of confusion, terror, and war which followed. They professed one simple basic belief: Something is either good or bad, it is either decent or indecent, it serves either God or the devil, and most important they believed that it was my duty to find out what is right and what is wrong. This was what their education was all about. Yes, education is a stratified totality. First, education is facts. Second, it is concepts based upon these facts. Third, it is a decision based upon facts and concepts a personal decision as to what is right or wrong. Without this moral decision education is worthless. When we fail to make decisions, someone else will make them for us. In times of intimidation, revolution, and war this "someone'' is more apt to be the mobs in the streets who care little for facts or concepts. The result is tyranny. If freedom and democracy are to survive, it will take a miracle a miracle that only dedication and commitment can bring about. After the technological and intellectual revolutions, a moral revolution is necessary. When trapped in a world of indolence, incompetence and impotence, when challenged by ambivalence, arrogance and aggression, when you feel insignificant, you can and must do your duty! You know the needs of your family, your neighbor, your town, your state and your community. You have here a duty to perform. lt is not important that others are bad, lazy, and dishonest. It is important that you are good, diligent, and honest. It is not important that others lie, scheme, and destroy. It is important that you are hard at work to maintain our democracy, justice, and peace. There is no time to waste. The revolutionary forces shaking the earth have converged upon us, presenting us with difficult choices with a need for action, for ideas, for concerted and sustained commitment as a nation and as individuals. We must meet the challenge with the conviction of our beliefs. We must remember that as Americans by birth or by choice we are heirs to a permanent, continuing, liberating revolution. Our great ancestors left us an unparalleled moral and political weapon that we must share with the suffering peoples of the world. http://www.marianland.com/libor001.html ____________________________________ Song: "Good Morning" by Rafael Brom http://www.marianland.com/music07.html Author: rafaelbrom Keywords: Obama Hillary Liberals Socialism Socialists Communism Communists Jews Holocaust Nazism Nazis Abortion Pro-Life Added: May 15, 2008

It seems the fortunes of the Australian Liberal party at the state level, is going from bad to worse. This time, in Victoria a party campaign manager was forced to resign over anti-semitic remarks, while Victoria's opposition leader, Ted Baillieu, was subjected to an internet smear campaign, instigated by staffers at party headquarters. A blogging campaign by at least two Liberal party staff accused Mr Baillieu of being everything from a communist to a moron. While the pair have been sacked, some party insiders believe some senior Liberals could be implicated in the scandal.
