The sinking of a suspected refugee vessel off the Cocos Islands has again focussed attention on Australia's moral and legal obligations to accept asylum seekers. The debate in recent weeks has been divisive, with the government and the opposition trying to outmuscle each other over border protection. Both sides have politicised asylum seekers, prompting calls from some quarters for the type of bi-partisan cooperation which existed in the 1970s between the then prime minister, Malcolm Fraser, and opposition leader Gough Whitlam, when thousands of refugees from Vietnam were settled in Australia. Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper was re-elected with a minority government about a month ago. But he might lose his job any day now. He's managed, like George W Bush, to unite everyone else against him. At least that's my understanding after my brother explained it to me.
