Did you know that Liberace influenced Elvis sense of showmanship? Well, you didn t think Elvis came up with the gold suit and rhinestone studded cape all on his own did you? Liberace showed him how it was done and what it took to dazzle an audience. Liberace was often the butt of jokes but he really was in on the humor. He use to joke that he laughed all the way to the bank. And then well into his career he changed it to you remember that bank I use to laugh all the way too? Well, I bought it. The man had some serious coin. He also had quite a taste for food and was known to put out quite a spread. Food was important for him and he says he kept three different sizes of clothing- thin, fat and impossible. The Liberace Foundation has put a cookbook, Joy of Liberace: Retro Recipes from America s Kitchiest Kitchen, which contains some of his favorite recipes. It s worth getting just for the kitsch appeal. Do we see a Liberace themed dinner party in your future? Liberace never disclosed his sexuality but he lived and died in a different era. Darrin, President of the Liberace Foundation, points out that when he died in 1986 from AIDS, Elton John was married to a woman. How s that for putting it in perspective? Through all the sparkles of the rhinestones and the jewels, the legacy of Liberace that shines the brightest is the Liberace Scholarship for the creative and performing arts. Liberace felt he owed his success to the scholarships he received as a youth. Sunshine would like to tell you that both he and Pumpkin made it to Tiki Oasis VIII, but that just isn't the case. Sunshine went stag and still managed to have lots of fun. A Mai Tai here and some Planters Punch there was all that it took. And maybe meeting some great new tiki friends and listeners helped as well. Don and Peter from the Bikini Beachcombers met up with Sunshine for an interview and some much needed tiki camaraderie. Drink of the Week Watermelon Julep 1.5oz Vodka 4oz watermelon juice 1/2oz simple syrup rosemary sprigs Easy enough, mix all in a shaker with cubed or crushed ice. Just a few good shakes, don't over shake. Pour into fancy cocktail glass (a clear one is best) and garnish with rosemary sprig and watermelon chunk in the drink. Kris and Chia-Lin still cling to their Treo 700p phones Steve wonders if we ll see the same kind of excitement and adoption of the iPhone from other handset makers and ecosystems. Kris thinks Google Android. Royalty rate hikes may shut down Pandora. Last.fm may not have the same issues since they are owned by CBS and the media giant already pays the appropriate royalties. Steve loves Simplify Media on the iPhone which gives him the ability to stream his iTunes library to his phone along with 30 other friends. John thinks that might extend beyond Fair Use. A federal judge ruled on Wednesday that copyright holders must consider the potential fair use of their works before sending copyright takedown notices to online video sites. How novel When will the strong arm tactics of these industry groups come to an end? Never. They ll just morph. Kris wonders why a service like Magnatune hasn t had a greater impact in terms of changing the way record labels conduct business. Ditto for CD Baby.
