The laptop computer has become a familiar site for the transfer and dissemination of cultural information. In response to the scale and theatricality of dominant video installation models, this work utilises the relatively modest exhibition format of the standard laptop computer in order to present unheroic content in which neither sound nor vision is overtly privileged. This work is designed for exhibition on a standard laptop computer with built in speakers (or if necessary small additional computer speakers). Aiming to collude the attitude, humour and attention span of popular cultural formations within the drier reflexivity of contemporary art, this project is an acknowledgement of both the rejection of aspirations toward originality and the conflicting desire to create. Sound ostensibly possesses an uncanny ability to imbue visual culture with authenticity, authority, emotion or corporeality, and as a consequence, often exerts a powerful visceral influence over the experience of visual culture. Altering existing or established relationships between sound and vision can profoundly affect perception and interpretation. This work aims to playfully elucidate the role of audio in creating, adding, or shifting meaning within visually centered cultural formations. Is it possible to find a form of poetry that begins rather than ends in ironic estrangement? This artist maintains an agnostic attitude to this question. from - The Naked Scientists Naked Science Radio Show PODCAST - Stripping Down Science
October 15, 2007

This week, we're taking on your science questions. We find out how cockroaches and ants avoid the heat in a microwave oven, how best to protect yourself from lightning and why a light box can save you from a SAD winter. Also, a table decoration inspired, radiation-resistant spaceship design to keep astronauts healthy, how the contraceptive pill hurts A lapdancers' looks and why penguins prefer to go fishing with their pals. Plus, in Kitchen Science, Dave explains how to make a detector for the Earth's magnetic field - a home made compass! But will it work in space? And what will happen when the Earth's magnetic field swaps round? We answer all these questions and more.
