On Thanksgiving Day this year, I sat with my girlfriend's lovely family eating turkey and watching Home Alone, and it occurred to me that in the hustle and bustle of reviewing new movies, I seldom take the time to go back and revisit the holiday movies that I remember from my childhood. Even among the titles I've viewed for this "Shelf Life" series, few of them were seminal kids movies, whether they were from my own childhood, or from those of previous or subsequent generations, and none of them have been traditional holiday or holiday-themed films. Home Alone was a film I saw at a formative time in my young life - I was 14 or so - but National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation was probably more important to me, since it balanced gingerly on the line between family entertainment and more grown-up fare. In hindsight, it's probably more oriented for teenagers and kids than anyone, even with (or maybe because of) its abundance of potty humor, but it seemed like 20 years was about the right amount of time to take between viewings. Which is why Christmas Vacation is this week's "Shelf Life" subject. Ya know, it doesn't feel like we're nearing the end of another decade, does it? There's no special millennium celebration or Y2K nonsense to get excited about, so it seems people are just sorta whatever about the past decade as if it wasn't very monumental or iconic, except for the part where our African-American president said something geeky about Star Trek. But I bet all the best end-of-the-decade content is yet to come, and it looks like Rotten Tomatoes is getting things started by presenting us with the worst (reviewed) films of the decade ... which they probably should've waited a couple more months to launch since, ya know, we still haven't seen Avatar (I'm kidding Jim - I'm kidding! Calm down!). So what's the worst reviewed film of the decade? Well, that honor goes to --drum roll please -- 2002's Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, starring the always enticing duo of Lucy Liu and Antonio Banderas. Guess audiences didn't exactly go ballistic over that one, huh? Ecks vs. Sever is closely followed by One Missed Call (2008), Pinocchio (2002), King's Ransom (2005), National Lampoon's Gold Diggers (2004), Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 (2004), Strange Wilderness (2008), 3 Strikes (2000), Redline (2007) and rounding out the top 10 worst reviewed movies of the decade is Witless Protection (2008). Out of all 100 films not one has a rating above 7%, which without a doubt cements its monumental dud status. Once upon a time (say, around 1980 or so) National Lampoon was a brand name that really meant something. It meant Animal House and Vacation. If you plunked down your money, it meant that you would be entertained by the finest comedians the 1970s and 1980s had to offer. You were guaranteed a good time and possibly the loss of bodily function from laughing too hard. You were watching films that the National Film Registry would eventually deem culturally relevant and worthy of preservation. Tell that to the naysayers of 1978! Actually, there were few naysayers in 1978. You may not realize it (or remember -- the '70s were a heady time) but when Animal House was released into theaters, Time Magazine proclaimed it one of the year's best, and Roger Ebert gave it four out of five stars, something that National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj couldn't achieve if it sacrificed children to the unholy one. Can you believe that? Once upon a time, National Lampoon movies were critically lauded. But then they also attracted talents like John Landis, Amy Heckerling, John Hughes, and Harold Ramis who could actually write and direct comedy. Even if you wanted to dismiss a film like Vacation as a bit clunky and crass (and I'm sure many did -- no critical record seems to survive on Google for this one), there was no denying that we could all recognize something of ourselves and our parents in the Griswold family. I doubt anyone walked out of National Lampoon's Barely Legal and said that. (In fact, former National Lampoon magazine writer P. J. O'Rourke told The New York Times in 2005 that what became of the company "breaks my heart, to tell you the truth." See? Movies can crush souls.)
