Second Life Looks at Google Lively!
from Videoblogging - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 15, 2008
Moderated by John Jainschigg, Director, Internet and Community Laboratory, Ziff Davis Enterprise, Inc., this lively discussion with panelists Rhonda Lowry, VP Emerging Social Media Technologies, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.; Eric Reuters, Special Correspondent, Second Life, Reuters, Inc.; and Mitch Wagner, Executive Editor, InformationWeek, UBM TechWeb looks at Google's quiet introduction of the Lively virtual world platform that may mark the beginning of a new era for the exploding virtual worlds industry. The locus of greatest attention in that industry and the domain of greatest innovation has long been Second Life, which just celebrated its fifth birthday. What do Second Life residents, stakeholders and media think of Lively? Does Lively represent a challenge to Second Life's vision, or a powerful endorsement? Will communities of residents and business stakeholders on these platforms remain separate, or mingle? What does the near-term future hold for both platforms? In this informal panel, hosted by multi-platform metaverse developer World2Worlds in Lively, Second Life, and on the web, you'll hear first thoughts from major media minds on the Second Life/Virtual Worlds scene.

Emergence
from WNYC's Radio Lab July 15, 2008
What happens when there is no leader? Starlings, bees, and ants manage just fine. In fact, they form staggeringly complicated societies, all without a Toscanini to conduct them into harmony. How? That’s our question this hour. We gaze down at the bottom-up logic of cities, Google, even our very own brains. Featured: author Steven Johnson, fire-flyologists John and Elizabeth Buck, biologist E.O. Wilson, Ant expert Debra Gordon, mathematician Steve Strogatz, economist James Surowiecki, and neurologists Oliver Sacks and Christof Koch. Somewhere in St Dunstan's University sits the Arnolfini Research Laboratory - a lab for hire, meant for flashy projects which will bring the college kudos and money. Unfortunately, the Arnolfini is staffed by what are known in scientific circles as 'idiots'. There is an annoying man in the cryogenics freezer along with several boxes of strawberry ice-lollies and some crispy pancakes. The only thing to do is defrost the occupant. Just keep him out of the way and all will be fine... unless there is a surprise inspection.
