In Amsterdam stond een interessant evenement op het programma, de Mike's Gym Vechtsport Tryout. Volgens de website was de doelgroep 12 tot 20 jaar maar iedereen was natuurlijk welkom. Kinderen en vechtsport lijken meer en meer een hot item te worden. De organisatoren van deze dag hadden het zichtbaar goed geregeld; veel mensen die hielpen, een strak schema en genoeg deelnemers. Jason Chambers : mixed-martial-artist and professional fight Bill Duff : former professional football player and wrestler ***************************** Muay Thai or Thai Boxing was born on the battlefields of the 15th century, during the legendary clashes between Thai (or Siamese) armies and their bitter rivals, the Burmese. Trained in the weapons-based fighting method known as Krabi Krabong, these early Thai soldiers also became famous for their toughness in close-quarters weaponless combat, where legs, knees, elbows and hands took the place of swords and sticks. This type of weaponless fighting became Muay Thai, known as the "Science of Eight Limbs." Though the Thai army still uses its lethal techniques, Muay Thai has also been the country's most popular spectator sport for hundreds of years. There are more than 65,000 professional Muay Thai fighters in Thailand today. Many of them are poor peasants who begin training when they are as young as six years old, studying with highly respected teachers and risking injury—or worse—for the chance to compete. Up until the 1930s, Muay Thai fighters fought bare-knuckled or with their hands wrapped in hemp rope that left nasty cuts. Because of the high number of deaths in the ring, the Thai government introduced new rules, including weight classes (though the great majority of fighters remain in the lighter weight classes) and mandatory use of gloves, cups and mouth guards. As a result, modern Muay Thai boxers rely less on punches and more on their lethal kicks, elbow and knee strikes and grappling. Speed, accuracy and power are the buzzwords in Muay Thai. Fighters use kicks as both offensive and defensive weapons, often aiming to strike their opponents in the thighs for maximum impact. The knee and elbow strikes used in Muay Thai are almost unique to the sport. Executed correctly, with all the force concentrated in one spot—often the opponent's head—the hard bone of the elbow can act like the blade of a knife, devastating the opponent and sending him bleeding to the mat. In the devoutly Buddhist Thai society, Muay Thai is governed by ritual and tradition, and many fighters practice meditation as an integral part of their training. In belgië vond het North Sea Camp 2008 plaats. Een Shinkyokushin karatekamp in Oostende. De trainingen zijn meestal buiten op het strand wat een karateka nog meer 1 doet voelen met de elementen tijdens zware inspanningen. Zelf ben ik zeer te spreken over de organisatie van dit kamp; ze regelen alles tot in de puntjes, accommodatie en eten zijn prima, trainingen zijn afwisselend en in de juiste balans en er is altijd een interessante line-up van instructeurs. Dit jaar kregen ze het voor elkaar om de wereldkampioen als instructeur op het kamp te laten lesgeven. Tijd dus voor een kort interview gemixed met een korte impressie van deze 3 topdagen!

Er zijn heel wat martial arts waarvan ik de naam eerder heb gehoord, maar niet van deze; Sippalki. Net als taekwondo een martial art uit Korea maar dan anders.. In Amsterdam kun je de lessen van master Choi volgen. iFight ging op bezoek en toevallig was de Koreaanse televisiezender EBS ook aanwezig om een documentaire te maken over deze sport. Een paar weken daarvoor had ik al wat filmmateriaal verzameld van een workshop aan leerlingen in het middelbaar onderwijs. Deze beelden zijn ook door het interview heen gemixed. Een paar maanden geleden vierde de FOG (Federatie Oosterse Gevechtskunsten) haar 25-jarig jubileum in Rotterdam. Gedurende de dag waren er veel activiteiten. Seminars, lezingen en een internationaal Shinkyokushin Karatetoernooi. Belangrijke personen uit de wereld van de martial arts waren aanwezig. De avond werd afgesloten met spectaculaire demonstraties van de deelnemende organisaties. Hoog niveau dus! De voorzitter van de FOG, Henk Verschuur, was ook aanwezig. Vlak voordat het programma zou beginnen, heb ik een interview buiten het Feyenoordstadion gedaan. Helaas ging er iets mis met de microfoon.... Ik kreeg het niet voor elkaar om het interview nog een keer over te doen. Wellicht wel in de toekomst! Onze nederige excuses voor het werkelijk zeer slechte geluid. De footage van de avond was super en het gesprek met deze humoristische, bevlogen en warme persoonlijkheid maakt dit toch weer tot een speciale issue.
