A new play explores the journey of two sisters from Melbourne to their father´s homeland in the Torres Strait and the post-war migration of their Dutch mother. Sisters of Gelam is about the universal search for identity, interwoven with contemporary and traditional song. A murdered Murri assassin returns from the dead to seek revenge in Nicole Watson´s award-winning manuscript The Boundary and we yarn with the Wadi Wadi elder Allan Carriage as he fishes off the point at Port Kembla south of Wollongong.

Lorraine McGee-Sippel reads from her newly-published memoir Hey Mum, What´s A Half-Caste? about her life´s journey to find her family and recover her lost Aboriginal heritage.

This week, we pay tribute to the man once described as the most undervalued talent in Australian popular music. A Yuin elder, Bobby McLeod was a singer-songwriter, activist and cultural warrior who joined the Aboriginal tent embassy in the 1970s. He mellowed but never lost the fire in his belly. Bobby´s music career included an 2005 ARIA nomination for best world album for Dumaradje. Aboriginal people are warned that this program includes the voice of the late Bobby McLeod. What do you get when you put two Aboriginal actors and two Aboriginal stand-up comedians in a room together? `A Black Sheep Walks Into A Baa´ is a new production by the Indigenous theatre company, Ilbijerri, which premiered at the 2009 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. We meet the cast and writers behind `Black Sheep´. This program includes adult language and themes.

Despite being one of the country's finest voices, Emma Donovan has enjoyed only modest success in her career as a solo artist. This week on Awaye!, we bring you a music special featuring three songs from Emma's new EP. The songs include a tribute to the stolen generations, Ngarraanga (remember) which is sung in Gumbaynggir, the language of Emma´s mother's father. In the past year two leading Aboriginal performers have composed new works about their traditional country. In the case of soprano Deborah Cheetham, it´s an opera set in the late 1930s on her Yorta Yorta country at Cummeragunja, a former mission station on the New South Wales side of the Murray River. In the case of master didjeridu player William Barton, it´s a composition he co-wrote with Matthew Hindson inspired by the dramatic Gulf country of north-west Queensland, the traditional land of the Kalkadungu people. Sylvia Scott grew up on the Erambie Mission in Cowra, where the Aboriginal people had a reputation for standing up for their rights as far back as the 1940s. She remembers fondly a childhood with not much money and many mission rules and regulations but one that was full of music and fun. Her father Lochie Ingram was a shearer and good provider for their large family and her mother Louisa Ingram led protests against the mission managers, who at times denied the whole mission population their rations. Louisa and some of her children are in the iconic photo of the 1938 Aboriginal protest that was held in Sydney while white Australia celebrated its sesquicentenary. Sylvia discusses the fact that they have never been properly identified in the various published versions of this photo. She also talks about the circumstances of her sister Doris going into the Bomaderry Children's home, not being allowed to return for many years. Sylvia tells her colourful life story to her niece Suzy Ingram, who also talks about her own memories of Erambi Mission and the Ingram family. We also catch up with Development Officer for Indigenous Music in the Northern Territory, Heath Baxter who talks about some exciting new bands and a mentoring system betwen older and younger musicians. The first ever mass strike by Aboriginal people, the walk-off at Cummeragunja mission station in 1939, has inspired the soprano and librettist Deborah Cheetham to write an opera, to be performed by an Aboriginal cast. Pecan Summer might be the Aboriginal version of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, which the composer stipulated should only ever be performed by classically trained African-American singers, true to the story itself.
