Because Kodiak is an important environmental asset which affects the fishing industry, particularly salmon fishing, and because the island is coveted by hunters worldwide for its unique Kodiak bear and other game animals, there are strict laws governing fishing and hunting activities as well as hiking near spawning streams. Both the Department and the city maintain websites and publish helpful brochures to help communicate these strictly enforced laws. All of the city's hotels and businesses have these materials in prominent areas for guests and licenses can be purchases in the city's main sporting goods store as well as online.

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and crew medevacs a 32-year-old man from the 165-foot Seattle based fishing vessel Bountiful with reported symptoms of pneumonia to the St. Paul clinic, Monday, Sept. 28, 2009. The Bountiful was approximately 150 miles northwest of St. Paul. An HC-130 Hercules aircraft and crew was diverted to relay communications with the helicopter. The man was delivered safely to St. Paul where he was later transported to Anchorage via life flight medical services. Video by Air Station Kodiak, U.S. Coast Guard. XtremeSignPost Update: A convergence of technology and hardware allows us to record and share our RFID fishing adventure. I limited out in 5 minutes fishing for halibut in Kodiak with Chazman Charters. A fantastic day on the water! We used a Nokia 6212 to retrieve a Microsoft tag from a tagged Chazmanian hat. The camera on the iPhone used the image to download a YouTube RFID fishing video. We were able to record, upload, and share our Outdoor Adventures on Twitter using an NFC cell phone and a Bulacard. The memories and halibut will be shared with friends and relatives. I cant wait to get back on the water.
