  Like all the British bands, Herman s Hermits were no exception when it came to doing good old American Rock s. The next one I call the CPR song. After that they had a big hit over here with a tune that was written and originally done by my man Ray Davies, with the Kinks. I ll be telling you how they happened to get the name Herman (in this case, something misheard). Another Yank song by them, this one originally done by the great Sam Cooke. Peter Noone left the group in 1971, and since has appeared on numerous sitcoms and dramas- and we ll even throw in a mid 70 s hit he had solo. Then I will go out with a flurry of songs to make your memory bank dizzy and will shave decades off your chronological age. And ala Ed Sullivan, I will make you wait till the end to hear my favorite Herman s Hermits song- and the first one we ever heard here in this country back in 1964. All in all, a nice way to spend the first day of Summer on a Saturday afternoon! Mike

Well after some vacationing, I am back from the dead with some more dead, lol! Oh, I need a rest from my rest. Picking up from where we left off, Liz Claiborne passed away last year, the famous clothing designer. I ve got something from the Kinks for her. The guy who wrote Unchained Melody died, Hy Zaret. Interesting story in that he was supposed to write it for a 1955 movie called Unchained, but he refused to include the word unchained anywhere in the song. Give a listen, he didn t! Also, we lost Boots Randolph, whose instrumental hit was equally famous for being the theme song for a very funny British comedian. You should recognize it immediately. Bill Pinkney the last remaining original Drifter died in 2007. He was the distinctive bass singer who left the group just before their major successes. As this was broadcast just one day after St. Pat s, I thought I would do my Mom proud by going back to Tommy Makem and the Clancys for one more. This one a folk song you should know. Hilly Crystal, founder and owner of the legendary CBGB s died last year. So one from the early punk band Television for him. Speaking of television, Alice Ghostley of the show Bewitched died- she will never be MORE Ghostley! I will leave you with a couple of questions. This episode begins with a rumination on censorship, specifically the controversy surrounding the book “The Golden Compass”, by Philip Pullman. This little book rubs the Catholic church the wrong way, (What a bad choice of metaphor on my part, I’ll let the Listenership fill in their own punch line.) The irony of this story is that one Catholic organization is actually handling the censoring of this book in the RIGHT WAY, and should serve as an example for others to emulate! Some of my personal history is also exposed, as I get into a story about censorship, former employers, big-box book stores, pretentious owners, Ulysses by James Joyce, and my anger towards people who do things just because they can, without stopping to think if they should. (Thank you Jurassic Park and Dr. Malcom. That phrasing has to come from a more profound source, but damned if I know, so I’ll give credit to what I know.) Superproducer MUMBLES makes an on-air appearance and makes history by quoting the new catchphrase for 2008, “DO IT WITH A SMILE”, remember you hear it here first.
