Up a Paddle - Episode 53 - It's On Like Donkey Kong
from Up a Paddle March 18, 2008
Up a Paddle - Episode 53 - It's On Like Donkey Kong This episode I review King of Kong: A Fist Full Of Quarters. I also talk about sending astronauts to Mars and forgetting to leave the lights on outside, Disney going kawaii, and having a smashing good time playing Smash Bros. News Disney, Madhouse to Make Stitch! Show for Japanese TV. And yet Maximum Horsepower is denied yet again. Where's the Horace Horsecollar love? Trigun movie announced. I plan on going to Tim Hortons to have a donut to celebrate this. Gurren Lagann movie announced for Fall 2008 (In Japan). My drill is the one that pieces the heavens! I wish these DVDs would hurry up and be released here. One Way Mission to Mars. I think it's gonna be a long, long time till touchdown brings me round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home. Oh no, no, no, I'm a rocket man. World's oldest animation found. Take that Gertie! Wordsworth, Cool Devices categorized as Obscene by Canadian Customs. Dominion Tank Police only considered admissible But, but I trusted you Dane! All this time I thought you had a wholesome, family friendly podcast (Anime Pacific). I thought we were on the same page when you came out in support of Wholesome Wear. But then you review a show (Dominion Tank Police*) that has been marked only as admissible by Canadian Customs. For shame! I might have accidentally watched that show not knowing what was awaiting me. Do you know how many bowls of Corn Flakes I had to eat to suppress the wicked urges that that article begat, let alone how many more I would I have to eat if I had watched Dominion Tank Police** Also, here's the pdf I mentioned. * More like the Dominion Tank Police that like to have sex with each other whilst innocent Canadian children watch on with mouths agape because a certain podcaster recommended this lurid filth as appropriate, which although it doesn't actually have any explicit sex scenes, it could. Ridiculous. ** Bonus Pretzels to anyone that gets that Random Fact Japanese ISPs to crack down on P2P anime sharers. It will be interesting to see how this affects the fansub community. This is finally an action that could see results. Fans here might have to resort to actually buying their content. That is, if they can get it across the border first. Also, it will be interesting to see if anyone counts how many times I say It will be interesting when I talk about this news item in the podcast. Pirate site crunchyroll.com has been given 4.5 billion in venture captial. (It might have been only 4 billion. Only.) Give me 4.5 billion and I'll steal stuff for you too. Partial Review - Super Smash Bros Brawl I recently picked up Super Smash Bros Brawl and went over a few of the modes in the podcast. Sufficed to say, I'll be talking a lot about this game, but in the meantime, here's my Friend Code (4296-2752-0234). Please be my friend. I want to play online so that I can show the world my mad skills with Princess Peach (or lack thereof). Review The King Of Kong: A Fist Full Of Quarters You can find more info on this movie here: http://www.billyvssteve.com/ I liked it. Two barrels up. Also, here's the Mr. Awesome interview I mentioned. (NSFW) Vote and Content Request I'll be celebrating my not podfading for two whole years (a personal best) in the upcoming Episode 55 of UAP. If you are a fan or just a fellow podcaster (which you are, since only podcasters listen to other podcasts), please feel free to send me a congratulatory email or voicemail. Or alternatively, send me a cease and desist notice. Either way, please send me something. I'll be sure to repay the favor. Also, please digg and vote for Up a Paddle at the regular podcast voting places. The links on the right will take you to the appropriate sites. The song played was Nintendo by Saint Dragon You can email me at upapaddle@gmail.com or go to http://upapaddle.com and leave comments. *** Almost Forgot *** Please join the Up a Paddle Facebook Group It is a way better group than the Guys named Cade group. Thanks for listening!

DVD Verdict 114 - The Friday Filibuster [11/30/07]
from November 30, 2007
Dave and Mac are triumphantly reunited, following Mac's diabolical computer crash three weeks ago. Sadly, this unfortunate setback booted Mac's Vampire/Dragon novel out of the "Write a novel in one month" contest. On a happier note, the boys spend this episode dissecting Bob Zemekis' BEOWULF in 2D and 3D and the quirky new documentary THE KING OF KONG; suffering the wasteland of new television due to the writer's strike; Mac's take on Cartoon Network's live-action BEN 10 movie; and perusing the upcoming releases for December 4th, including PIRATES 3, SUPERBAD, NANNY DIARIES, 24: SEASON 6, and BSG: SEASON ONE in HD. While it may take them a couple episode to regain their groove, Ambush Topics like these will carry them through: Hammers on film; Creatures with more than one head; Memorable tentacles; Who wins in a tag team cage match between Aragorn & Boromir and Inigo & Westley? You make the call. Enjoy! You can email the boys your questions, complaints, and suggestions at fridayfilibuster@dvdverdict.com, or show your support by voting for us at Podcast Alley, and Digg. To avoid missing any episodes in our schedule, subscribe to the show via iTunes.

FS #177: Toronto Top 5 / Eastern Promises / Guy Maddin / The King of Kong
from Filmspotting September 14, 2007
September 14: When we last left Adam and Matty in Toronto, the fledgling duo seemed all hugs and kisses with few disagreements to mar their burgeoning relationship. Would their discussion of David Cronenberg's new Russian mob thriller "Eastern Promises," starring Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts, further cement their lovefest, or would the gloves finally come off? Also on this Toronto Film Fest edition: A conversation with visionary Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin, whose new film "My Winnipeg" could command a strong position on Filmspotting's Top 5 Toronto Film Fest Movies countdown. In addition, the boys find time to confront their own dangerous obsessions with a review of "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters." Seth Gordon's documentary (currently playing to great critical and audience acclaim) examines the esoteric world of classic arcade gamers and, specifically, the epic clash between Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe for Donkey Kong supremacy. Music by The Arcade Fire courtesy of Merge Records Filmspotting is presented by Spout, a gathering place for people who love movies. Sign up for free and discuss this episode! 112 - 09/09/07 Bobby Blackwolf Show - Dreamcast and PS1 Birthday, Adam Carpenter on Fury
from The Bobby Blackwolf Show September 13, 2007
Con season is finally over - we reminisce about PAX and Dragon*con. This week's interview is with Adam Carpenter, lead designer for Fury, where you can get your PvP on in a big money tournament this month. While at PAX, we took a look at Halo ActionClix from Wizkids. We also saw King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters and, while it may be inaccurate, it's still a very well-made film. The show was taped on the birthday of the Dreamcast, and we look back at 9-9-99 and then look to the sad present. SEGA of Japan is discontinuing hardware support of the Dreamcast. But, two new games are coming out for the system by an independent developer. In the present generation, Factor Five have sent out reviewers guides to Lair, as if they had never played a video game before. Then, we take calls about Metroid Prime 3, Apple getting into the gaming industry, and then are reminded that the original Playstation also launched on this day. Then, we relay a story about the founder of America's Videogame Expo getting drunk at PAX and getting kicked out after hitting on the volunteers that run the show. The next two weeks will have shows live on SATURDAYS at 8PM ET/5PM PT due to personal commitments.
