Ghulam Ali - Hangama hai kyon - Ghazal This ghazal was also performed by Amanat Ali in Saregamapa 2007 ******************************** Ghulam Ali(born 1940) is a famous Pakistani ghazal singer Ali was born in the village of Kaleke in the Sialkot district of Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). He belongs to a musical family his father was a vocalist and a sarangi player who gave him early training. At the age of 15, he became a student of the legendary Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, who was a master of the Patiala Gharana (Patiala School) of Hindustani music. His actual training was provided mainly by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's three brothers Barqat Ali Khan, Mubarak Ali Khan, and Amanat Ali Khan, in Lahore. All these great teachers of classical music taught him the finer nuances of classical music and his solid foundation of classical music included studying Thumri and learning to sing ragas. Career Ali started singing for Radio Lahore in 1960. Ghulam Ali's father named him "Ghulam Ali" after Bade Ghulam Ali. Along with singing ghazals, Ghulam Ali composes music for his ghazals too. His compositions are raaga-based and sometimes include a scientific mixture of raagas. He is known for blending gharana-gaayaki into ghazal and this gives his singing the capability to touch hearts. He beautifully sings Punjabi songs too. Most of his Punjabi songs have been extremely popular. Though from Pakistan, Ghulam Ali remains as popular in India as in Pakistan. He burst into the Indian scene with a Hindi film song "Chupke Chupke raat din" in B. R. Chopra's movie, 'Nikaah'. Other popular ghazals include "Hungama hai kyon barpaa" and "Awaargi, yeh dil yeh paagal Dil mera", and many more. On being questioned about Indian, Pakistani pop groups, Ghulam Ali replied, "Frankly, I am really bewildered at their style of singing. How can you sing a song by running and jumping around the stage? The stage is meant for performing not for acrobatics." Ali has also sung some beautiful ghazals like Kina Kina Timro Tasveer, Gajalu Tee Thula Thula Aankha, Lolaaeka Tee Thula and Ke Chha Ra Diun in Nepali language with Narayan Gopal, a wellknown Nepali singer, and composer Deepak Jangam. These songs were compiled in an album entitled Narayan Gopal, Ghulam Ali Ra Ma, and are popular among Nepali music lovers to this day. "I sang many famous hits in films during the '60s and '70s, which are still remembered by the music enthusiasts. But it's sad that even after a lot of efforts, I have been unable to convince the film people to employ my voice in their movies," Tasawwar's return to music could have aided the music directors who know Miss Madam Noor Jahan in films. Yet these music directors do not choose to employ her voice. The young singers seem to be very touchy on these matters. They do not want anybody else to take a single song from them. They feel insecure as if they don't have the talent to cling to the ranks! In her heyday, Tasawwar K sang many superb hits which include: Ve sab ton Sohniyan (Rangeela) Agar tum miljao (Imandar) Log diwaney hain (Bin Badal Barsaat) Zindagi mere yaar (Parda Na Utthao) Pyar Ka Mausam (Pyar Ka Mausam) Aesi chal main chaloon (Anmol) Zindagi zinda dili (Aansoo) Main nachoongi le ke (Mastani Mehbooba) Dekhi hai main ne teri chaal (Parde Mein Rehne Do) Barf ke farsh par Others are Vey rus ke tur paey ho sarkar, Thukra rahee hai dunya, Aaaj kal parson, loot liya re man chain etc. A good looking singer, Tasawwar sang a lot of Punjabi and Urdu songs which were lapped up by the audiences in the 70's. Nisar Bazmi employed her voice to best effect in films like Mastani Mehbooba, Anmol etc. She also sang duets. When Anmol's hit titled Aesi chaal main chaloon was first run on the radio, it was such a hit that for months nobody listened to any other song but this Bazmi sahib number, which was picturised well on Shabnum. Aisi chaal is one of the mega-hits of all time in Pakistani films music annals. Similarly, Agar tum mil jao also became a raging hit from Imandar filmed on saucy Nisho. People still listen to it with interest. In the same way her Punjabi number Ve rus ke tur paey ho sarkar also broke records of popularity in its days. Tasawwar Khanum's popularity has a history. After Zubeida Khanum, there was no singer who could bring the same vitality, naughtiness and a village belle's sensuality to the film song,s until Tasawwar came along. She wasn't traditionally gifted with a soft voice, but her songs became popular on the ingredients that were essential for commercial hits. It was difficult for any female singer to make a name for herself amidst such brilliant names like Noor Jahan, Runa Laila and Mala. Yet, Tasawwar managed to hit the jackpot with her own determination and verve. One hopes that some senior music directors of the film industry would realize her caliber and will give her and our dieing film music a chance again to fuse the same spirit in the music. Mannu Parr Laga Dey Vey - Ashiq Hussain Jatt (Punjabi Folk) (audio) ********************************************************** Sohni Mahiwal is one of the four popular tragic romances of the Punjab and Sindh, the other three are Heer Ranjha, Mirza Sahiba and Sassi Punnun. It is also popular in Sindh and across the South Asia, the story is one of the most prominent examples of medieval poetic legends in the Punjabi and Sindhi languages. Sohni, the potter's daughter Sohni was the daughter of a potter named Tula, who lived in Gujrat town in the Punjab near the banks of the Chenab on the caravan trade route between Bukhara and Delhi. As soon as the 'Surahis' (water pitchers) and mugs came off the wheels, she would draw floral designs on them and transform them into masterpieces of art. Izzat Baig of Bukhara Izzat Baig, the rich trader from Bukhara (Uzbekistan), came to India on business but when he saw the beautiful Sohni in the town of Gujrat on the Chenab in Punjab, he was completely enchanted. Instead of keeping 'mohars' (gold coins) in his pockets, he roamed around with his pockets full of love. Just to get a glimpse of Sohni, he would end up buying the water pitchers and mugs everyday. Sohni lost her heart to Izzat Baig. Instead of making floral designs on earthenware, she started building castles of love in her dreams. Izzat Baig sent off his companions to Bukhara. He took up the job of a servant in the house of Tula, Sohni's father. He would even take their buffaloes for grazing. Soon, he came to be known as "Mahiwal"(buffalo herder). Sohni's marriage When the people started spreading rumours about the love of Sohni and Mahiwal, without her consent her parents arranged her marriage with another potter. Suddenly, one day his "barat" (marriage party) arrived at the threshold of her house. Sohni was helpless and in a poignant state. Her parents bundled her off in the doli (palanquin), but they could not pack off her love in any doli (box). Izzat Baig renounced the world and started living like a "faqir" (hermit) in a small hut across the river. The earth of Sohnis land was like a dargah (shrine) for him. He had forgotten his own land, his own people and his world. Taking advantage of the darkness of the night, when the world was fast asleep, Sohni would come by the riverside and Izzat Baig would swim across the river to meet her. He would regularly roast a fish and bring it for her. It is said that once, when due to high tide he could not catch a fish, Mahiwal cut a piece of his thigh and roasted it. Seeing the bandage on his thigh, Sohni opened it, saw the wound and cried. The End Sohni Swims to Meet Her Lover Mahinwal From the next day, Sohni started swimming across the river with the help of an earthen pitcher as Izzat Baig was so badly wounded and could not swim across the river. Soon, the rumours of their romantic rendezvous spread. One-day Sohnis sister-in-law followed her and saw the hiding place where Sohni used to keep her earthen pitcher among the bushes. The next day, the sister-in-law removed the hard baked pitcher and replaced it with an unbaked one. That night, when Sohni tried to cross the river with the help of the pitcher, it dissolved in the water and Sohni drowned in the river. From the other side of the river, Mahiwal saw Sohni drowning and jumped into the river and drowned as well. Sohni's Tomb The Tomb Of Sohni In Shahdapur City Sindh, which is 75 km from (Hyderabad). According to the legend the bodies of Sohni Mahiwal were recovered from river Indus near Shahdapur and hence are buried there.
