Beach Walk 642R - Memorial Day in the Pacific
from Beach Walks with Rox May 26, 2008
[See post to watch Flash video] iPod | Phone | Embed Beach Walks Copy and paste the html code below into your site. Beach Walk 642R - Memorial Day in the Pacific We originally filmed this episode for Memorial Day in 2006. But it clearly stands out as a timeless message, and represents the true magic of Beach Walks. It is all completely unscripted, no shot list, we just showed up and worked as fast as we could before the sun set. Sometimes, you know the universe is on your side. This is one of our favorite and most powerful episodes, though you won't be finding us at the beach.Today's show was filmed at the Hawaii Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. 50,000 leis were donated, and over 100 young Boy Scouts (thanks for the correction Mark) placed a lei and a flag on each gravestone. I was quite stirred to be in the presence of death while smelling the sweet scent of plumeria lei. Though most of those buried here are from modern wars, this "punchbowl" of an ancient volcano was the site of Hawaiian aliʻi burials and human sacrifice of those who violated the kapu or taboos. Dedicated to my dad and my friend Eric, who's done two tours in Iraq. Hawaiian word: Pūowaina: hill of sacrifice Kaua: war Kapu: taboo Maluhia: peace Join us at The Reef and Listen to Reef Radio Add this to your Technorati Favorites Support us by buying your own copy of our Beach Walks Theme music. Beach Walk 611 R - It's All Good
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) April 02, 2008
This Beach Walks replay debuted in August 2006. "There was an awesome swell in town, so I decided to grab some surf footage. And I couldn't stop until the light faded and the sea mist fogged my lens. The water was filled with people playing in the waves with all kinds of fun toys! (Where are those funhogs anyway??)Show highlights: Outrigger canoes catching waves (Lanikai and Kailua); stand-up paddling surfer; Anissa, Dave, Johnnie, and Temujin; Lexi hunting for a Snickers bar for Johnnie.Hawaiian word: Wa'a: canoeJoin us at The Reef

Beach Walk 609R - Walk with Me and Dream
from judson baptistchurch March 31, 2008
Today is a replay of one of my favorite Beach Walks episodes - orginally Beach Walk #150. Please join me for a few Sun Salutations or Surya Namaskar to greet this day. As I stretched into the first back bend with my eyes open to heaven, I saw a waning full moon directly overhead in the deep blue sky. It reminded me of our connection across the many miles of land, sea, and sky. And I smiled at that.Yoga means "union" so this seemed a natural, reinforcing event. Frequent visitors to Beach Walks will remember Show #116 with my friend Shaina Noll. You can hear one my my favorite songs from Shaina, "Dream" in today's show. This moving meditation was also inspired by Jen and Kent's Know Your Dreaming. Mahalo nui loa to all of you beautiful souls.Today's special show music is Dream by Shaina Noll. Darest thou now oh soul; walk with me into the unknown. You can buy the song Dream on iTunes here.Hawaiian word: Pilina: unionJoin us at The Reef

I am still traveling so please enjoy this Beach Walk classic episode! For many of us, Friday's are already a favored day of the week, but in Hawaii, we actually celebrate it week after week. It's a good reminder to take the pressure off things. Hawaiian word: Aloha: hello, goodbye, I love youJoin us at The Reef

Beach Walk 602R - Magic in the Mundane
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) March 06, 2008
Most all religions and also a big chunk of the new age movement imply or implore that we follow a strict regimen of behaviors in order to be happy, to have grace shine upon us, to get those parking spaces, and to live happily ever after. I don't buy it. I think happiness can be found by finding pleasure in the small things, the little mundane aspects of life that themselves are gems of pleasure. By focusing too much on the big things, or holding out happiness until [fill in the blank here], we miss the pleasures in the now. This is classic #2 vs #1 stuff. The #2 is only impressed by the new, the large, the grand. The #1 can learn to find contentment just about anywhere. For Lexi, every toss of her ball appears just as wonderful and compelling as the previous, or the next!P.S. Shane and Rox are traveling this week so please enjoy some of our Beach Walks Classic Episodes! This was originally aired as Episode #206.Hawaiian word: Ho okalakupua: magicJoin us at The Reef

Beach Walk 601R - Making Up Stories
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) March 04, 2008
Amanda Congdon and Andrew Baron are experiencing some public disagreements regarding their video blog, Rocketboom. Gut feelings and instinct are great tools...except when they turn out to be wrong! And especially after engaging in a course of (mis)guided action. (It can sometimes be the sneaky work of the #2 personality - see show #102 for an explanation). So here's a catchy little concept I learned to help me step back from the brink of getting emotionally invested in situations before I know the facts: 1. Making up stories 2. Pretending they're true 3. Having feelings about them 4. Acting on those feelings It's human nature to want to speculate and to have opinions. But consciousness is the opportunity to stop there, claim one's feelings as personal and subjective, and sit with all the discomfort that accompanies them without having to pretend that the hunches and feelings are facts. You can watch a wrenching example in The End of the Affair with Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore, where he made up stories, pretended they were true, and the ending is tragic.Spread da aloha.P.S. Shane and Rox are traveling this week so please enjoy some of our Beach Walks Classic Episodes! This was originally aired as Episode #134 and there are some good comments on that page.Hawaiian word: Ho omeamea: pretendJoin us at The Reef

Beach Walk 600R - Ignoring Muscle
from Beach Walks with Rox March 04, 2008
One of my favorite workouts: building the ignoring muscle. That's when I tell my brain (and my #2 - see Show #102 for more info) that all is well and they can ignore whatever irritant may be in front of me. Noisy neighbors, office gossip, tics and quirks of friends and family. You get my drift. How do you workout your ignoring muscle? I do a combination of talking to myself and deliberately moving my attention onto something else.P.S. Beach Walk 599R - Homage to Age
from - blip.tv (beta) March 02, 2008
I have not always had the most self confidence. But I must say the older I get, the more comfortable I am living in my own skin, viewing life through my own eyes, all instead of worrying what others think or how I should perform.I wonder if this feeling of deep-seated comfort could somehow be passed on, downloaded, or shared with younger people, and if so, how that might transform the world. I personally spent so much energy just managing my worries, many of which at this stage in life I see as utterly trivial!Maybe the sheer force in numbers and rebelliousness of the baby boomers is transforming the idea that it is more fun to be young. In fact, I do seem to be aware of far more multi-generational friendships than ever before. Is that true for you? Do you find getting older "a good thing"?P.S. Beach Walk #528 - Vedic Astrology with Sally
from Beach Walks with Rox: Daily Aloha from the Beaches of Hawaii November 09, 2007
iPod | Phone | Audio Only | We were walking down to the beach (water is still officially closed) and we "ran into" Sally Spencer (our signs aligned?), a woman I see often on the beach and with whom I've chatted on MySpace now and then. I have really liked her energy. She's a practitioner of Jyotish, or Vedic Astrology, based on Hindu beliefs and related to but different from western style astrology. She tells us about it in today's episode. It has a sacred basis and supports much more activities to influence your planets that is common in western astrology. What's cool IMO, as a sidebar, is all of the interesting people we meet living aloha here in Hawai i. It's so diverse and rich (maybe other places are too) yet because of the openness and sunshine we actually get to meet them walking the beach! Beach Walk #527 - Get Healthy in Hawai’i!
from Beach Walks with Rox: Daily Aloha from the Beaches of Hawaii November 08, 2007
iPod | Phone | Audio Only | Hawai i has been rated the third healthiest state in the USA. You can read the details in the Honolulu Advertiser. We were first in a few categories, and the ones that struck me were lowest death rates due to both heart disease and cancer. I attribute our aloha-filled beauty to be part of the reason. In general, less stress and more happiness can be associated with less heart disease and cancer. So many people tell us that they watch Beach Walks to de-stress. As a former health coach with Johnson Johnson, I know how very small but repetitive changes can lower a person's blood pressure and cholesterol. I am looking for a workplace that would like to help me measure the physiological effects of Beach Walks. It would involve targeting a group of employees who are at risk for hypertension or high cholesterol. It's an easy screening test. Then, have them watch our show each day for 3 - 6 months, and then re-test to see if there were any changes. If your company would be interested in talking more about this, please contact me. This is slightly sidebar to the discussion but read the last paragraph on this interview with a Japanese nanobiotechnology scientist. Beach Walk #526 - Misguided Urges
from Beach Walks with Rox: Daily Aloha from the Beaches of Hawaii November 07, 2007
iPod | Phone | Audio Only | Some urges are so irresistible...but that doesn't mean they are going to produce the effective results! Two examples come to mind today. One is the controversy over at Gawker Media (which I also blogged about on our Bare Feet Studios web site) requiring employees to set up profiles at Facebook. The other is our situation here in Kailua where a group of homeowners on L'Orange Place have gated the beach access. There are a lot of strong opinions on the matter, most of them strongly in favor of finding a way to preserve beach access. You can find the back story in this in Beach Walk #494. Beach Walks #523 - Multitask to a New Brain
from Beach Walks with Rox: Daily Aloha from the Beaches of Hawaii November 02, 2007
iPod | Phone | As I have mentioned before, Secret Cameraman is not fond of multitasking. I am. Or at least, I like to do a few things at once assuming none of them require deep concentration. New brain studies from UCLA though show that the interruptions trigger a different part of the brain, and that long term memory of the task "suffers" as a result. What if multitasking is brain evolution in process? Will the multitaskers have an advantage? However! I started wondering if there isn't some evolutionary adaptation going on. The younger you are, the more likely you can engage in multiple IM conversations at once, and interact with several devices/people at the same time. What if we are learning to act more in the moment? What if we don't need the long term memory so much, because we have digital storage of data to access whenever desired? Just like you don't have to memorize a lot now with the existence of Wikipedia. I get a strong sense of opinion infused in this topic, that multitasking is "bad." I think if talking on a cell phone causes more car accidents, we can deal with that specifically. But there could be other things in motion here that we are only just discovering! I hope you will share your opinion on this.
