Beach Walk #522 - Got Smart?

from Dan T Earl on November 01, 2007

First! Mahalo to Earl who sent us a poor man's steadicam for Secret Cameraman to use. It is wonderful! Thank you so much Earl for your lovely gift. It is a very clever alternative to the much more expensive and complicated expensive varieties.Second, we were at a Geek Meetup last night, with a room full of very smart people, discussing the relative importance of smarts in itself, and whether the internet is more useful to smart people or those who are less smart. Watch this episode and then let me know what you think about intelligence?Hawaiian Word: Akamai: smartPlease check out our Blogroll page with many more links. Beach Walk #503 - Happiness is not stupid

from yourcalifornia on October 03, 2007

I heard a NY Mets fan on NPR say, "I feel stupid for being so happy for 6 months" ... only to have the Mets lose to the Phillies. As much as you have heard me talk about loving the co-mingling of energy during competition (and enjoying it!) the less I enjoy getting invested in a specific outcome. Beach Walk #500 - Balancing Me and We

from mrpregnant on September 26, 2007

The 500th episode. Yada yada yada. Secret Cameraman is off island (this seems to happen at all the major milestones!) and I'm waaay busy this week, so it's gonna be just another episode. It occurs to me that we are coming full circle. Used to be, we all really depending on each other for survival, and it was literally life threatening to speak or act outside of the tribal mentality. The big thing of the 60's and the hippies and the boomers and the yuppies, was discovering selfishness. Now though it seems there are many like Bill Spencer at the Hawaii Venture Capital Association who see the value to us as individuals by taking care of our communities in addition to ourselves. Funny enough, I've been carrying around my rake all week to clean up some of the broken glass and cigarette butts at the beach. While I was talking to Jim C, another man came up to borrow the rake as he wanted to do some clean up too!No pressure though - maybe today is a day just for you. Either way, it's all good with me.Hawaiian Word: Wahi noho like o ka po e: community Hana no eau: artPlease check out our Blogroll page with many more links. There are so many things are "known" or for which we have data, and yet, it is difficult to let them be real in our lives. We carry with us legacy beliefs, legacy feelings, and legacy behaviors, that can be very hard to update in real time! Beach Walk #462 - Vehicular Solitude

Beach Walk #462 - Vehicular Solitude

from Paulo Coelho on July 05, 2007
Duration: 227
The beach was too packed today so lexi and I bring your this episode from the car! It works out though, as I had recently read an article in the Honolulu Advertiser about Commuters hooked on solitude in their cars. The article compares Hawai habits to those in the rest of the USA (we rank 10th for using public transportation and 6th for walking to work!). As usual, Lexi played her part perfectly. What the article really did not discuss, is the sheer delight you can experience being all alone in the sanctity of your vehicle. To my New York friends: I am sad a little bit that you do not get to experience this delicious dose of privacy. Until urban planners understand that piece of psychology, all the mass transit ideas will continue to get less than stellar adoption. Maybe commuter trains should offer private cars?Have you had your solitude today?Hawaiian Word: Ho okahi: solitude Ka a: vehiclePlease check out our Blogroll page with many more links. Beach Walk #437 - Asking Clients For Help

from RavProductions on May 30, 2007
Duration: 311
A call from Alaska (hi Chris!) and talk about re-balancing the client-vendor power relationship. I am not sure if business relationships are different here in Hawaii or if I am different living here in th eland of Aloha, but I find people remarkably friendly, open, and there is a less rigid hierarchy of relationships. I really like it.Meanwhile I learned that my hair dresser had surgery. I would like to help her if I can, even though I'm her client. I am not sure how I feel about asking one of my clients for help; we are the ones in the relationship who usually provide the help! I think it is part of the dismantling of traditional roles, like is happening in so many ways, in large part because of the internet. What do you think?Hawaiian Word: K kua: helpTags: help, clients, alaska, conch, beach, hawaii, lanikai, beachwalks, podcast, walk, roxannedarling, roxanne darling, kaimoku, travel

Beach Walk #436 - Bikini Culture, Internet Culture

from BarnardNews on May 29, 2007
Duration: 244
Patricia Lange, a fellow at the Annenberg Center for Communication, wrote an article for the Barnard Center for Research on Women discussing in part how I use bikinis occasionally on Beach Walks specifically to be true to our local beach culture and to break the stereotypes associated with them. She did a lovely job; I recommend you go read the article. In thinking about culture, I also remarked that the internet is a culture of its own too. CC Chapman recently congratulated a caller who had reported on his progress leaving comments on websites. That was a homework assignment CC gave at his PodCamp New York session. And one I suggest often also! It's a great way to have a cross-cultural experience. It's possible have a cross-cultural experience just by visiting the person across the hall or across the street from you!The Vulnerable Video Blogger: Promoting Social Change through IntimacyHawaiian Word: Huaka i: travel, tripTags: stereotype, culture, bikini, internet, beach, hawaii, lanikai, beachwalks, podcast, walk, roxannedarling, roxanne darling, kaimoku, travel

Duration: 204
I was reminded of the value of timeout by my 2 year old friend Kaile. She knows when to take one; I seem to wait until after I'm too tired to do much more than spew. Lots of people believe that little children really are tapped into a deep sense of understanding about how life works, only to lose it over time in the grand socialization process. It sure does help in the relationship department, knowing when to say when. You can see a little more of miss Kaile in episode #351.Hawaiian Word: Luhi: tiredTags: timeout, tired, friend, beach, hawaii, lanikai, beachwalks, podcast, walk, roxannedarling, roxanne darling, kaimoku, travel

Beach Walk #404 - Selfish Nature

Beach Walk #404 - Selfish Nature

from mrpregnant on April 18, 2007
Duration: 173
A message on my niece's IM inspired me to think about the nature of selfishness."If I give in, what do I give up?"That's a challenging question for me, and for people who lean toward being "generous to a fault." I sometimes think of how this flow works out in nature. Animals are intrinscally selfish, and yet somehow it all works out beautifully.Attention Windows Media Player Viewers We are simplifying our process. Beach Walk #403 - Promises and Pressure

Beach Walk #403 - Promises and Pressure

from NVNS on April 11, 2007
Duration: 219
Promises are a feel good solution in the moment. But they can sure create pressure and disappointment on the way to being unfulfilled.Of course, they can also ramp up the energy and help motivate me towards a short term goal. Nonetheless, since I am looking for ways to be happy and experience less pressure, I tend to avoid promises as much as possible! My urge to please and my pleasure in sharing often tempt me to make promises about htis or that, but I've learned to keep my mouth shut when it comes to those two words, "I promise!"Attention Windows Media Player Viewers We are simplifying our process. Beach Walk #389 - OTR - Santa Cruzin

from The Energy That is You on March 28, 2007
Duration: 139
The siren call of the sea was irresistible for me today; off to Santa Cruz for a late afternoon walk.My bizzy schedule had me a bit tired and confused this morning. It occurs to me that "business" is a form of making things appear to be very "important" so we keep bizzy holding it all together. That pressure can be very invigorating; it can also be counter-productive when fatigue or confusion are present. When the latter happens, I often use EFT. Come back tomorrow for more info on that and a demonstration. You can also read another review here.Note to my California friends: Sorry to have missed you this trip. Beach Walk #325 - Voices of Optimism

Beach Walk #325 - Voices of Optimism

from RCRA on February 21, 2007
Duration: 542
Originally inspired by The 2007 Edge Question, this episode features the voices of our viewers answering the question, "What are you optimistic about?"With mahalos to Joe I learned about Edge - "to arrive at the edge of the world's knowledge." Every year they pose a question, and dozens of well-known thinkers respond with their perspectives. I thought this was a good idea for us in the Beach Walks community. And our show is an homage to the Random Show.Mahalo to Secret Cameraman for pulling these many voices together into one perfect Beach Walks episode: sometimes serious, sometimes frivolous, always aloha. Mahalo also to the creative and caring contributors: Jen and Kent in Maine Bob in NYC Catherine in South Carolina Rhett and Amy Susan & her dog Lexie David in Houston: Mission Accomplished! in 2:38:13.
