Hot Property - Israel/Palestine

Hot Property - Israel/Palestine

from Most Discussed on November 09, 2009
Duration: 0
November 2009 Despite Obamas attempt to halt Israeli settlements, hundreds of Palestinians continue to be evicted in the sacred land of East Jerusalem. This powerful front-line report challenges the Israelis over the practice. They didnt give me time to get my things!, cries one young girl, standing outside her former home in the old town of Jerusalem. Not so far away, Nasser Jabber tries to reason with the Israeli police blocking the entrance to his home. I have the documentation! , he cries but the police refuse to remove the Israelis settling inside the apartment, even delivering them food. They tried to buy the house more than once, Nasser says, I know who they are. Settler groups are increasingly using the Israeli court system as a means of acquiring new properties in the east. A Jew not only has the right, a Jew should be compelled to buy, says Daniel Luria, the head of an ultra-nationalist religious group. His aim is to buy up as much Palestinian property in East Jerusalem as he can, and to move Jewish families in. The Arabs are out and they're in! an Arab woman cries, as the Israeli police escort Jewish settlers into the home she has just been evicted from. Despite his documentation, Nasser is never re-admitted to his home. The Israeli courts here operate in a political manner, rather than in a strict legal manner says Roy Dickinson, an EU diplomat. God promised us Jerusalem, says an Israeli settler, now its finally happening. Produced by SBS, distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Nov 2003 More and more Cubans are turning to the popular religion of Santeria for spiritual guidance. In the tiny Cuban town of Regla, a woman is throwing a party for her saint. She watches in delight as her 'saint' writhes to the drums, spitting rum at the guests to cleanse their souls. Santeria was bought to Cuba by African slaves and quickly developed into a home-grown religion. Now 80% of the population are thought to believe in it. Shamil Basayev - Chechnya

Shamil Basayev - Chechnya

from Favorites of childrenswishlist on October 29, 2007

August 2005 He's Russia's most wanted man, responsible for Beslan and the Moscow theatre siege. In his first interview since Russian troops went back into Chechnya, Shamil Basayev gives his account. Wearing a T-shirt blazon with the words 'anti-terror' and cradling a grenade launcher, Shamily Basayev speaks of his remorse for Beslan. I didn't expect such cruelty ... I never thought they'd do it. But he's not talking about what his men did. He's blaming the Russians for storming the school. In his eleven year career, Basayev has become notorious for acts of extreme violence. Ten years ago, 130 died after he seized a hospital in South Russia. Then came the Moscow theatre siege. But in targeting children, he went too far. Global revulsion allowed Putin to discredit the Chechen's fight for independence. However despite the backlash, Basayev claims he'd do it all again. You must understand us correctly. We are at war.

Child Prostitution - South Africa

Child Prostitution - South Africa

from Favorites of josephleeclayton on September 21, 2007
Duration: 0
Dec 1998 Child prostitution is rife in South Africa. It's a means of survival for impoverished township kids. Standing at the side of the road two young girls pass time playing like children, until their pimp tells them to shut-up. Their friend 14 year-old Lindy, lifts her top to let a potential client inspect her wares. They like to suck them because I'm young she says. Following a girl on a job we confront her white client. His flies undone, he denies he knew how old she was and demands his money back. A passer-by comes to help him out. He was just following a call of nature, he says. Nobody knows how many children are working the streets. They stay here because of poverty, because there is no home to go back to and prostitution is all they can do to survive. Local police have given-up chasing the clients; If you catch these people they won't give evidence [against clients] because tomorrow they will be back on the street. Instead social workers try to take the children into homes. The numbers they can help though is small, and most turn back to prostitution.

Human Trafficking - Greece

Aug 2004 Greece prides itself for its ancient history and for being the cradle of western civilisation. But it's also famous for one other thing: human trafficking. I don't know how to describe the men's behaviour towards us. They treated us like animals. As if we were scum, states Marina. Like thousands of others, she was lured into Greece by a respectable job offer, only to find herself forced into prostitution. The first thing that every trafficker does is rape and beat his victim, explains psychologist Irina Gionis. The women are constantly abused before being sold on to brothels in other countries. When I talk about a slave trade, I seriously mean a slave trade, like back in the 18th century, states aid worker Nikitas Kanakis. Human beings who are sold sometime up to ten times, like commercial commodities. After years of ignoring the problem, Athens has recently stepped up efforts to target Mafia traffickers. But authorities admit that the problem can only be solved with international co-operation.

The God Particle

The God Particle

from Favorites of etlap1 on September 17, 2007

September 2007 It's one of the great unanswered questions of science. What gives matter its mass? By generating conditions present moments after the big bang, scientists hope to locate the elusive 'God Particle'. This is going to take us to the next layer of understanding , enthuses Prof Geoff Taylor. The Hadron Collider at CERN, due to be switched on next year, will shoot beams of energy around a 27 km loop, smashing them into each other at the speed of light. It's all in the hope of detecting the Higgs Boson, or 'God' particle, thought to give matter its mass. CERN scientists will also create mini black holes and search for dark matter. As Taylor states: We are on the verge of discovering how our universe evolved from the first few fractions of a second. Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures
