ROCORI City Update * July 3, 2008
from DigElogROCORI July 03, 2008
*QUICKTIME *Phone Folks, it’s that time of year again. The weather is gorgeous and the boat’s been out of storage now for the last month. As the family and friends come into our gorgeous State, it’s important to remember a few safety items. In this story, our three city administrators discuss some issues regarding the 4th of July and what is going on in the ROCORI area. The subject that came up most in this story is the use of common sense. When on the lake or just out shooting some bottle rockets, please use good judgment and common sense. This is a time to celebrate our independence, not make a trip to the emergency room. DigElog ROCORI would like to wish everyone out there a safe and happy 4th of July. ************************************ Consumer Fireworks Information The sale, possession and use of certain non-explosive and non-aerial consumer fireworks is now permitted in Minnesota. Examples of legal fireworks include items such as sparklers, cones and tubes that emit sparks, and novelty items like snakes, and party poppers. A more detailed list is available at the link below. Consumer fireworks may not be used on public property (i.e. parks, roads, alleys, schools, government property, etc.). Purchasers of consumer fireworks must be at least 18 years old and retailers are required to check photo identification of purchasers before selling these products. Explosive and aerial fireworks are prohibited for public sale, possession and use. Prohibited fireworks include firecrackers, bottle rockets, missiles, roman candles, mortars and shells. Consumer Fireworks Fact Sheets, Fireworks Safety, Fireworks Recalls ************************************ VIEWER COMMENTS: Hi Duane - State law does not prohibit the use of legal fireworks within city limits. However state law also does not restrict local ordinances from doing so. I would recommend contacting city hall. if they have no ordinance you are allowed to use the fireworks within the city. If there is an ordinance you would have to comply within the specifics of the ordinance. Happy 4th. Representative Larry Hosch ***************** Duane, I'm not sure of Cold Spring's code... but generally use of fireworks is restricted in city limits... at least the 'illegal' types. Sparklers, snakes and party poppers... go to town with. I doubt anyone will care unless we are in a very dry spell where a fire hazard may be an issue. Dan Richmond City Administrator

He s also a good friend, and I had a blast with this rare opportunity for the two of to shoot the breeze in a semi-official manner. Anji Bee Vidcast #54
from Anji Bee Vidcast July 02, 2008
Inspired by a conversation with my friend, Azita - who joined joined the blogosphere for the first time - I have returned to my vlog. I just got a new computer and thought I'd try out the new version of Garageband for vlogging. Have to say I hated it... Anyway, I talk about my reasons for quitting vlogging, taking up tennis, giving in to World of Warcraft, shoutout to Dan in Santa Barbara and working on new Lovespirals recordings. Plus my current secret fantasy...

Swimmer
from Nanoramas July 02, 2008
Swimmer Originally uploaded by Jen Pro-V A moment I enjoyed from a recent trip to the spectacular Old Mission Peninsula in Northern Michigan, just northeast of Traverse City. I hadn t originally intended the video to be silent, but my error actually turned out nicely - the silence makes this video feel much more like a moving photograph than a video, and you can imagine the sound for yourself. And here s a (hi-def!) home movie of our adventures at Sleeping Bear Dunes, chomping on cherries, and exploring the maritime history of the region, Valdez-style. View Larger Map I m loving Flickr video and notion of the extended, moving photograph, though, strangely, I find it s an awkward fit on a videoblog. These videos work so nicely when subtly mixed in with still photos on Flickr, and even though videoblogs are often about capturing such ordinary, but poignant, life moments, these Flickr videos feel a little too small for a videoblog. The Flickr embed format also feels out of place on a blog - it s a little visually clunky compared with Blip.tv or Vimeo. But, my time has been devoted to other life explorations, so I haven t been posting much video here lately, and therefore I offer this small voodle for now. More photos and videos of this trip in my photostream.

Audio: Prelude to Revolution Part 3 - Happy 4th of July!
from My Word with Douglas E. Welch July 02, 2008
A July 4th Gift from WelchWrite.com “I am apt to believe it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore” -- John Adams Prelude to Revolution - May 1775, to July 4th, 1776 [audio: http://eclipse-1.blogspot.com/2008/06/prelude-to-revolution-final-installment.html] A live audio production of Eclipse-1 Media. MANRESA
from JOANPLANAS.COM July 01, 2008
American Cliche #154
from American Cliche July 01, 2008
Download American Cliche #154 After 11 days and 4 trips across the United States, I m back home in Santa Barbara for an extended period of time. Beyond missing Kim, Emma, and Mia it just feels really good to be back in my own home. This past week I was in Washington DC doing some work for an organization called the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Meso, as I ve learned that it is called, is a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Before this week I pictured lots of 70 year-old men that worked in factories getting this disease. I ve since learned that millions and millions and millions of homes and thousands of schools in the US and hundreds of products we use in our everyday lives contain asbestos. In fact, I learned because my childhood elementary school was built on a landfill containing asbestos that I could be at risk. Pretty scary stuff to say the least. Anyway, I just wanted you to know how I spent my week and the extraordinary people I met that showed me what true courage is. St. John's Boys' Choir Leaves For Czech Republic
from DigElogROCORI July 01, 2008
*QUICKTIME *Phone The SJBC Concert Choir departed on Friday, June 27 for the Czech Republic where they will represent the United States and the state of Minnesota at the International Boys' and Men's Choral Festival in Hradec Králové and Prague. The boys will travel throughout various regions of the country, exploring the nation's architecture, history and culture. This marks the choirs second trip to the Czech Republic. In this video you'll join the boys and their parents as they say final farewells the day of their departure. The concert tour this year is being lead by the Boys' Choir new concert choir director André-Louis Heywood. André Heywood joined the St. John's Boys' Choir staff a year ago. He has a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the Don Wright Faculty of Music of the University of Western Ontario. Another special feature of this video story is a short interview with Br. Paul Richards as he reflects back on the very first trip the Boys' Choir took to Europe. It was for 21 days and included a combination of about 30 boys and numerous parent chaperones. This years tour will include 13 days in the Czech Republic. Friday, June 27 Sunday, June 29 The day began by attending mass at the Church of St. Vitus. The boys were *excellent*, being very attentive even though they didn't understand a single word. They also tried singing along with some of the Czech hymns. They then spent some time rehearsing in the lobby of the hostel, drawing a number of visitors passing by on the street. After lunch was some time for shopping followed by a tour of the town on wood rafts. The boys had a free evening for socialization. Monday, June 30 The boys started the day with a silent breakfast (a tribute to Br. Paul pehaps?) and then set off to Hradec Králové, the site of the Festival. They enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Duran restaurant and then headed into their venue rehearsal at Holy Spirit Cathedral, a 700-year old church in the Old Town square. The boys had a great rehearsal and then spent some time settling into their dorms and having dinner. They then attended the opening ceremonies of the festival, featuring a cameo performance by each choir. The boys were particularly impressed with Boni Pueri, the host choir, and with the American Boychoir who they will sing with in November. Tomorrow begin the long days of festival rehearsals!
